*The Rid flexes in his silver-sequined suit.* Oh what a species is man. So beautiful and complex and yet so utterly bent on self-destruction. Yes or no? Many quotes exist concerning the concept of power. Yet I feel one thing is certain. Utopia does not exist. If you set every man against another on a level playing field, one or more as a grouping will rise above their fellows in the decisions of the collective. A lot has been written on this subject. Far too much for me to do it justice in analysing. All I can do is wonder at the inhernetly conservative nature of this argument that both surprises and disappoints me. But in the realm of this thing of ours, it rings true. Were the field to stay level and were your fellow human beings to remain friends, steadfast and true, every man would be a Godfather. The fact that this is not so tells me one thing. Our fellow criminals can be admired and respected. But can they ever be trusted? Many years past, a woman rose to power above all the others. Her name was Anita and as Godmother of Philly she exercised control of the Underworld with an iron fist. Alongside her, the separate yet allied organisation of Scotland enjoyed the fruits of the mutual union, enjoying power and Godmother status while many other families came and went. Up until the time when only one family could stand alone. Only one leader. At which point Scotland was eliminated. There is nothing to stop us looking upon every man and woman as a friend and ally. Yet one thing stops this more effectively than any other. Our own ambition. Please feel free to discuss this, bearing in mind the inclusion of examples is to illustrate the travels of power and nothing more. |

Sliver sequined suit - is that what I have seen flashing in the night in our HQ hallways? Elena smiles at Rid and ponders his words for a moment Your words ring very true in many ways Sir. My only comment would be to point out that in this world of ours, friends and allies are not supposed to be on a level with our families. Families are supposed to be the be all and end all of our existence. I have seen many a mafioso of high and low standing come to these streets and preach and vehemently spew forth their disgust of people who put friends or allies in front of their family's needs or well being. Yet time and again, I have seen these same people either betray their families during war, or state their loyalty to one side but yet not act upon their word until the very last moment while their own allies die sometimes unnecessarily because this person did not act. I have seen high powered leaders preach these same things yet are later found to be helping rogue crews. My own grandmother died during such a battle because she was keeping her word to protect her family at all costs which was to fight said rogue. This same ancestor had a trusted family member leak information to an opposing CL because they had been "friends going back 7 years". So, I put it back to your corner Rid, why do people continue in this world of ours to do this. I hear a lot all the time about people not speaking enough in the streets, well this is one of the reasons why I, compared to a lot of my ancestors have been one of the mute ones. Most of the speeches I've seen for quite a while now, and my ancestor's diaries back this up are purely said because it sounds good, not because the CL or MadeMan or whoever the speaker may be truly means it, therefore I find it ridiculous to even consider replying. |

Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer. This is not a new idea. Civilizations have come and gone because of the very things you speak of. Take human nature, then add in our natural survival instinct, then add in a natural thirst for power and you end up with a nasty cocktail that can turn well intentioned leaders into backstabbing warmongers. Is "this thing of ours" exempt from the natural order/disorder of things? I think not. These circles will continue. Sadly, but surely. |
