Kates had used an exorbitant birthday check from her mother to buy the bookstore. Marietta had been desperately trying to keep her away from the Philadelphia strip club, and Kates figured literature was her passion farthest away from dancing. The purchase of this shop was one of her few spending indulgences- other than her increasing rum habit, of course. She'd spent the last few weeks cleaning out the store during her rare spare hours and shipping in books from around the country. Old libraries, private collections. Anything she could get her hands on, and she'd managed to put together a damn good haul. Her father would've been proud. He'd shared her love of literature and had had a bookstore of his own in Las Vegas. She remembered running around the tall stacks of books, relishing that unique, rich smell and the feel of the leatherbound books in her hands...

Burying the past as she approached the telephone pole, Kates pulled the flier from her pocket and attached it where people could easily see.
