Part two: The Fight. You look down with disgust at the thug who squealed beneath your foot. Should he have kept quiet you would have finished him quickly, with dignity. But instead you just lean heavier on his windpipe, until he suffocates. The moment he gave you the news that the Don and his personal bodyguard were coming you had already made up your mind. You would stay and fight, with honour, and either take down the head of the family that spurned you or die trying. Looking round the church you start planning. This is what you do best, kill people. It's not the prettyest skill but it is neccesary in this thing of ours. And as you have proven it doesn't always make you best buddies with everyone.. Twenty minutes later the church is yours, ready to take on anything they can throw at it. Barricaded windows and doors, guns and ammo placed strategicaly all over the place. And some surprises too. As you hear feet crunch in the gravel outside, a faint smile flickers across your lips. Your finger tightens around the trigger of the tommy gun in your hands. Grunts and scrapings can be heard from the other side of the door as they try and force your barricade down. it is built up too well though, so they fail. they move to find other entrances. "Hey! This motha' fuka' aint so good after all! C'mon guys, I found a door." You sigh to yourself. This is just too easy. The moment the mouthy thug pops his head round the door you blow it off, blood showring the entrance. Instantly three more experienced marksmen leap through the door after him, passing your clearest line of fair. bullets spray like deadly hail from the muzzle of your weapon, and two of the three men drop, clutching limbs. The third turns his gun to face you, before he too is dropped by a single shot to the shoulder. Their three groaning bodies should serve as a warning for anyone who tries that entrance again. But you know it won't stay this easy. These are just the scouting party, the footsoldiers.. Your thoughts are interrupted by the whole front wall complete with ornate wooden door door, and your painstakingly constructed baricade being blown to shards by something explosive. Shards of rock and wood shoot past your face, and as the smoke clears hundreds of bullets follow them. For the first time surprise, and almost rear, flit across your face, before you compose yourself and gun down a handfull of men with the remaining ammo in your tommy gun. when this is spent you throw it to the ground. Time for a nasty surprise... You pick up another machine gun, shooting not at the men swarmimg into the church, but at a wooden beam propped between two pillars, holding them up. The half an hour you spent sawing through it payed off. With a slow groan it breaks appart, and the two pillars start their ponderous journey downwards. You smile at the screams of pain and death that comes from under them. "Keep calm" you tell yourself.. "Just a few left, I might even survive this.." The smoke clears, and you throw your spent gun to the side. The only gun left on you now is a small derringer. over teh screaming bodies and demolished masonry step five figures. This is it. The rulers of the family.. The Don leadig them, his Right hand man and Left hand man flanking him, and flanking these are the family Consigliere and a Promicing Made man, being groomed for a higher place in the family. You stand your ground as they approach, clutching your derringer. You open your mouth to call out to them, asking why you are being hunted down, but before you can make a single noise the Made man riases his pistol and shoots you twice in the shoulder. Through the haze of agony you look up at the five, surrounding you, gloating. The don grins. "Well well.. Fancy meeting you here. Have you met Gerono?" He motions towards the Made Man "Your successor. You were always a loose gun.. We needed someone we could trust, someone we could controll. And now.." The Don never finishes his sentence. The hand that had been edging down to your boot as they gloated came up, stabbing him up through his neck as you lept up, ignoring the pain. you wrenched the gun from his hand and five shots rang out. They never recovered from the shock, each falling outwards from you, their blood pooling arround their heads. You walk over the bodies and debris wincing at the pain in your shoulder. The summer breeze catches your black coat. Sirens wail in the distance, but they won't catch you. No one ever does. |
