The Four Families Of New Dominer

New Dominer - Fictional city based mostly of New York.

                       - Boroughs: Mainland (Manhattan), Kings (Queens), Onyx (Bronx), Crooklyn (Brooklyn)

Setting - New Dominer, 1906 - 1924

Part 1 - The American Dream

America, The Land Of Opportunity! The country where you can make all your wildest dreams come true. That's what everyone in Italy was talking about. A chance to escape crime and poverty. A chance at a new life! My name is Joseph Garnito, an Italian immigrant. I arrived in this new country with a bag full of dreams. A bag I did hope to open; a large house, expensive clothing and beautiful women. What I got, however, was poverty, discrimination and hardship! I arrived at the dock of New Dominer with my parents, at the age 13, year 1906. We were examined head to be given citizenship.

"Name?" One of the officials asked to me.

"Uh, er, Joseph Garnito, sir." I answered.

"So, you were learnt English back in Italy, did you?"

"Yes, sir, my parents considered important before we become rich!"

The officials chuckled.

"What's so funny?" I asked, puzzled by their seemingly mocking laughter.

"Oh, nothing, son. Nothing at all." The guard answered, "Well, you and your family seems to be in good health and working conditions. No criminal record. Well, welcome to the United States Of America, The Land Of Opportunity! You will be placed into a new home and it'd be wise that you look for a job."

We were relocated in to East Forman district in Mainland, one of the four boroughs of New Dominer. East Forman was a district filled with other immigrants of poverty. Roads were littered with filth and everyone here was forced to live in old ran down tenants stuffed with other families. I thought to myself that this was a temporary settlement. We would soon make lots of money and afford all the nice homes I seen on the way up here. I was wrong. I lived two more years in poverty, until I felt like I couldn't take it anymore.

One night at 8:00 pm I snuck out of the tenant and took a stroll through New Dominer. I passed many districts until I came across South Leisure and saw something I never seen before in America. Immigrants of wealth! I looked around at all the businesses and seen these immigrants dressed in expensive clothing; laughing, drinking and they were all Italian. I continued trotting down the sidewalk and stopped by a restaurant named "Willy's" when the door opened. Out came a man with his jacket flipped over his shoulder and a cigar in his mouth.

"Yeah," he called to the men inside with laughter, "I'll see you guys tomorrow!"

The man shut the door behind him and caught a glimpse of me through the corner of his eye.

"Hey!" He said to me, I jumped at his voice. The man reached into his pants pocket and threw a couple of coins at me, "Get yourself something nice, eh?" With the Italian Robin Hood wandered off into the night.

I jumped down and quickly scrambled up the coins. I looked at the door of Willy's, it called me. I hesitated for a moment but I finally gathered the courage to enter. In there were two Italian men sitting at the counter and another man standing on the other side serving them. One of the Italians caught sight of me;

"Hey, kid, what're doing here?" He asked.

"Isn't it past your bedtime, junior?" Willy antagonized.

"Ah, leave the kid alone." The other Italian protested, "Have seat, sonny."

I waited a second but thought it better to sit beside him.

"So, you got a name?" He inquired.

"Uhh ... Joseph Garnito." I answered.

"So, Joseph, what're running around for this late at night?"

"Oh, I, er, I don't really know."

He laughed in his throat and added, "Oh, I think I know. Hey, Willy why don't you fix some of that quacomoli you're so famous for?"

"Sure thing, Ramon." Willy agreed and hopped to it.

"So where you from Joseph?"

I said with a sigh, "East Forman."

Shaking his head he added, "I feel bad for you. East Forman is a terrible place to live."

"Don't rub it in." I replied.

"You know me and Tommy used to live there. Yeah, we got tired of the place. We got some good cash rolling in and now we're living in North Leisure!"

Willy laid the quacomoli in front of me. I began to eat.

"How did you get the money?" I asked.

"Really want to know?"

"Yes, I do. I want to get out of that hell-hole!" I insured.

Ramon looked out the window, checking for something. He removed his fedora and dropped some mysterious packets in there. He placed the hat on my head and explained, "Alright, Joseph, this is what I want you to do. Walk three blocks north until you reach Matthew Boulevard, look for house 2123, got it? Knock on the door and a man should answer. Tell him, "Regards from The Hawk" and give him what's in the hat. He should give you some money. Bring the money back to me and I'll split some of the money with you. And if you see ANY cops, ignore them. Don't even make eye contact!"

"Yes, sir!" I accepted.

"Good, now go!"

I hopped down from the stool and ran out the door. I slowed down after I exited, being sure to keep heading in a straight direction, eyes forward, drawing no attention to myself. I arrived, 15 minutes later, to the address. I knocked on the door, a large bald man answered. And, as rehearsed, I gave the items to him and said, "Regards from The Hawk." He exchanged money for the goods and shut the door. I hopped down the steps and ran back to Willy's. As I came came close to the diner I found Ramon outside of it talking to two police officers.

"Don't toy with us, Ramon. We no you're up to something!" One cop admited.

"Please, what do you take me for?" Ramon remarked.

"Search him!" The cop commanded.

They slammed Ramon against the Willy's wall and frisked him. Searching in all areas.

"Nothing!" The frisker commented.

"Damn it!" The other cop shouted, "Well, you better stay clean, Ramon, once you fuck up, I'll be after you!"

"Good to know. Have a nice day." Ramon farewelled. The cops exited the scene.

I walked up to him after the coast was clear.

"Did you get it?" He asked me with a smile.

"Yes! Here!" I handed him the cash.

"Five bucks." He said. Ramon stripped some cash and handed it to me, "Here you go, Joseph two dollars."

"This is great!" I accepted. Man, I almost feel like I'd never see this much money at once.

"That's nothing compared to what you'll be getting following this line of work." Ramon admitted.

"You're serious?"

Ramon shot a smile, "Come by tomorrow and I'll have some more work for you."

Willy walked out with the quacomoli wrapped with plastic, he handed it to me.

"So, you're gonna be here?" Ramon asked.

"Defiantly!" I answered.

"Attaboy. Run home now."

It became apparent to me. If I wanted anything in this damn country, I'm going to have to make it happen. I want the American Dream! Nothing is going to stand in my way.
