Depends on where you come from folks.  If you grew up in a neighborhood like North Memphis, which is the worst area in Memphis, which is fighting Detroit for number 1 in murders year in and year out in the USA.

I'm 40 years old, I have lived in Detroit, Cleveland, Akron, and other places where violent crime was frequent. I did dumb things when I was a young adult that put me in jail with people who had actually shot other people. No matter how high the murder rate is in any particular city, that does not mean people go around shooting each other all the time. Those who do almost always end up in prison for a very long time.

Even in the worst cities in the country, most fights are settled with fists. Take "Boyz in da Hood" out of your fucking DVD players and come back to reality.

Then again I'm sure we're from different backgrounds.  I've also noticed all the internet thugs around here as well, but seriously, where I'm from fights are VERY rarely settled with fist.  You must haven't seen First 48, the Memphis series.  They discontinued it because all the murders, so frequently, gave Memphis a even worst name.

I don't know how things are in those other cities, but I surely can tell you about where I've lived my whole life.  No "Boyz in da Hood" in my dvd at all. (though that is my favorite movie) ;]

I've lose 7 of my friends by the hands of someone with a gun.  The latest, the 1st day of this year.(all of these can be checked via yahoo or google) I've had 2 of them on First 48 (the trunk and the park episodes).  I've been to too many funerals and all this could have been settled with fist, but cowards use guns instead.

I teach at one of the bottom 5 high schools in the state, in the inner city. The same school I graduated from.  I've only tought their one year (going into my second) and we had 9 different occasions where students were cought trying to get guns in school.  This is no game Butt-Ox, this is real life.

And people do go around killing eachother all the time, tbh.

I've lost a few friends to violent crime, too, Marley. It happens. But my point is that most of these clowns here are talking out of their assholes and people who do shoot other people almost never get away with it. It annoys the fuck out of me because they are making it seem like it is a badass or tough thing to do to shoot someone. In all probability, most of the people here would drop a gun if they pointed it at someone, their hands would be shaking so badly.

Carrying a gun is not the same as using it. I'm actually surprised that it was only 9 incidents of people sneaking guns in to your school. THAT is common. Using it on someone is not. No, people do not go around killing people all the time. Not in Memphis, not in Watts, not in Hough, and not anywhere else outside of Baghdad. It has nothing to do with where I  live or my background. Maybe you think I've lived in Mayberry my whole life, but I can assure you that is not the case. It is because I have been around the block a few times that I know how to spot someone who doesn't have a clue what life is like in the rougher neighborhoods. They think it's like what they see on television or hear in a rap song or gangsta movie. I'm fucking sick of hearing it. They glamorize this shit like it is cool to live in the fucking ghetto. It is not, but the majority of people in poor neighborhoods are decent folks.

Do people carry guns? Yes, alot.

Do people get shot? Yes, it happens. But it is not something that happens over nothing.

Basically, if you know how to carry yourself, stay out of the drug scene, and don't fuck over people, you have nothing to worry about.
