An Englishman in New York Started by: Seldon on Aug 18, '09 04:11

Seldon looked around him at the other members of his family talking and laughing in the smoky haze of the local joint.  An enigma till now Seldon felt that is was time to reveal his past and what had lead him to a life of crime.  He downed his whisky in one and cleared his throat causing the others to look at him expectantly.  Usually very removed from socialising the others realised that it was time for him to join the circle and tell of his past.

"I never knew any family.  The first thing I can remember is the smell of old varnished wood above my bed in the orphanage.  I was told that my father had been killed in a construction accident while I was still in the womb.  My mother, heartbroken, stayed alive only long enough to give birth to me and then faded away within weeks of that."

"My time in the orphanage was not a happy one.  Strict rules and beating ruled the day and any form or personal freedom or individuality was beaten out of me.  Finally, having had enough of this, I walked away, found my way to the port and hopped aboard a ship bound to America.  As the ship sailed from the port I felt no loss or sadness at leaving the country. I had no roots, no family, nothing to tie me to the so called "Green and Pleasant Land"

"On arriving in America I began to search for work.  Nothing much there for a young immigrant I eventually managed to get a place cleaning tables in a small dingy café.  The café owner allowed me to sleep on the floor at night but took all my money to pay for this so called "accommodation".  One rainy night as I was about to lock up a tall gentleman walked into the café, calm as you like, and stuck a gun in my face.  My life had been colourful but I have never experienced anything like that, and to this day I could still not tell you the make and model of that number.  It was big!"

"I emptied the tills, giving him everything I had. As I did so I stared straight into his eyes.  They were dark, his pupils merging into the iris to give the impression of enormous black holes.  I was not scared; in fact I was curiously excited.  He stared back at me totally unruffled and as he was walking out threw a card down onto the counter. "For if you wanna make some proper money not this chicken shit"

"The rest does not need telling; robberies, drugs, disappearances, working my way up slowly.  A bad life for some but not for me: I had finally found my family, my home, my place."
