Godmother Marietta sat in a little cafe, drinking a cup of coffee and reading the latest issue of the Detroit Chronicle. She looks at her watch and sighs. I was late for my meeting with her.

Finally, I walked in the door and did a quick scan of the room. I noticed her, and went to sit across from her.

"Godmother," I said, as I took my seat.

She gave me a burning look. "You're late."

"Yes, ma'am, I know. I was heading here but the road I was planning to use was closed, so I was oblidged to take a long way around." I took a drink from my flask.

"Fever, you always have a good excuse. Now, I want you to tell me about the Russians. I had some insight to their operations before my man was killed. You took out the captain, but the damned Russians are angry about it." She took another drink of coffee. "And if this interferes with the Italian Guardian before it lands, God help you."

I lit up a cigarette and told her my story. By the time I was finished, the sky was darkening with storm clouds.

"Damn, I took a taxi here," said Marietta, looking at the sky.

"I could drive you back to the castle, it's on the way," I offered.

"Thanks." She climbed into the passenger's seat as I went around. We left the cafe and, fifteen minutes later, we were heading down a backroad, approaching the castle, when we heard police sirens in front of us. We got as close as we could and saw Sgt. Michael Young standing at the gates, holding a bottle of vodka I'd taken from the Russians.

"Fuck, it's a damn crackdown." I said quietly to myself as I returned to the car.
