Common Courtesy Not So Common Started by: Doria on Aug 16, '15 06:21

Doria stepped out of the alley way where she had been watching. She didn't come the normal route by boat onto these shores. Her ancestry had already been here. What she was always curious about was how people seemed to approach others. She'd watch them tire themselves so by reaching out. She knew it was for the better but for her the shadows were a calming place.

Among the alleys she could walk without bullets flying by. She could disappear from the police when her crimes didn't pan out just so. Her life was a solitary one. As solitary as it was she just couldn't help amusing herself by watching everyone else skitter here and there.

As she walked down the street she could feel the shadows clinging to her. Calling her home. Perhaps that sounded crazy to some but to her it was everything. Shadows were the calm. They hid the greatest treasures and secrets that anyone could possibly have. During her walk she mused about the fascination with the light and dark. Did both not play a role in one person just the same? Not to mention even daylight was just as dangerous for anyone as the day time was.

Looking up towards the sky Doria smiled. The sun had long been gone and her moon was bright and shining. This night was a night for new beginnings. At least for anyone that could put themselves aside to allow it. A smile played at her lips as she made her way further into the crowd of people. The jostling of busy people trying to make it home, to call it a night from all their work.

Doria simply blended in with the crowd. Just another face along the streets, until she had bumped into a stranger.

"Excuse me," she said quietly.

The stranger didn't acknowledge her. So she kept walking. This happened a few times until she bumped into a final person that eventually pressed her buttons.

"Excuse me."

When they made no reply she grabbed them by the arm. Her grip was firm but not hard enough to bruise the individual.

"I get that you are busy. I am sure you are in such a rush but would it kill you to be polite? Does being polite some how make you less?"

Doria glared at them. She wanted them to know how serious she was about it. The thought that people thought so little of those around them almost made her want to chuck something at their heads. Luckily she wasn't carrying anything she could throw, nor would she go about doing so anyways. It was not in her nature.

She'd confront but she'd never stoop to violence.

"Could you just tell me why it is so difficult to be polite? Why in this community you must pretend to be so much more important? Were you not where I am right now once upon a time?"

Because we're all egos, and we only can reaffirm our existence that way. Now move along little busy body, and don't block the street with your yammering.

Sounds like you deal with a bunch of Benny's to be honest. You get them everywhere. You just need to find the right people

She notices a young woman in the Streets acting as if the world has wronged her by not paying homage to her arrival.

Sweetie, don't expect acknowledgement from everyone. You're just another face in the crowd. We're a society of criminals. We cuss, we sin, some of us even drink a little too much.

We don't hold tea parties and we sure as Hell do NOT practice keeping out pinkies up when grasping a teacup.

We are hardened criminals. We kill. We steal. We help our friends get out of jail a little bit early whenever they need us. Manners and etiquette are the last things on our minds as we run from the coppers after stealing a purse or offloading some booze.

Seriously kiddo, figure it out. It isn't that difficult.

She looks the youngster up and down.

You don't seem very hardened so why would anyone be polite to a stranger, someone that will most likely be gone in a couple of days. Make a name for yourself, stick around, or fly under the radar for a bit if you so choose. Until you do this you're just another face in the crowd, a civilian, a petty thief.. Nothing more than a blank face no one will remember.

The answer probably is: Because there's nothing forcing them to be polite.

Gatsby listens to the young girl trying to get attention from the passerby's. She seems to want to reach out and befriend another but the individuals turn a cold shoulder. Basically telling her she is nothing more than a waste of time and space. Gatsby found this incredibly arrogant and even foolish.

I think you bring up a valid point little one. Do you see what i see? A nation once known for the brotherly love, the philia, is now known for the ego, the I. It is all about me is it not? It is all about what i can achieve, What i think is best, What i went through and my ancestors times. People find moments to belittle others in the streets, downplay ideas that are new, criticize others for any reason. I am not a fan of this so called mobster idealogy that as hardened criminals we must all act and portray a certain image. No. I would much rather see people going out of their way and befriending others.

Gatsby reached in his pocket and pulled out a little cigar that read, VIP. It was a gift from none other than -Telkin- himself. A young boy from the other side of the city in Chicago.

Yesterday i encountered a kid. His name was Telkin. See Telkin, approached me with such respect asking me for a moment of my time and was in complete surprise that i made it for him. His words were, "I am so thankful that you have made time for someone like me, a goomba." We spoke about this for a couple of hours. Sent words back and forth and i will be completely honest on my standpoint on this. Your rank, no matter who you are, means very little to me. It is your very conduct in the streets, your speech towards others, the ability in which you carry your actions. A Don who is around his family once a week opposed to a wiseguy who never leaves their sight, who is more valuable? At first glance you would say a Don. Strip it down to just the human aspect without the titles. A person who never leaves his families sight opposed to a person who is around once a week, who is more valuable?

I bring this story up because i feel it hits your issue on the head young daughter of the streets. See people say you are just another voice in the street or face in the crowd. I say they are just wasting their own time saying things like that. None of that is true. Why would anyone deserve to be treated with respect? Because we are people of respect. We give our respect. We are not savages. We are not like those hypocrites who kill for blood. It is all business. If i kill AfghanTango tonight, it is probably because i want to see DooDoobrown succeed. I would never do that of course as i am no killer and they are both very dear to my heart. Business is business however. I am rambling. Let me move forward and stay focused on my speech.

In the fullness of what i am trying to convey, we need not disrespect anyone based on the rank you do not have. We must remember, as you previously stated, we were too a no one a simple minded child walking the streets, A person trying to feed ourselves in these harsh winters. I disagree with the thought one has to be someone in anthers eyes to mean anything. However many are shallow and this is their thought. But when you become someone, watch how they do not stop reaching out to you. When they realize your gun can kill their leaders, look at how they want to be your friend. They do not care about you now and they wont in the future. They, as i previously stated, only care about themselves. They care not about your thoughts only what they can gain from them. It is a cycle that we do not stop going through at one point you will be ignored because you cant do anything for them and the next you will be admired for what you could do for them. But you will never really be cared for because its not about you, its about them.

Gatsby looks as if he discovered something about himself. Perhaps it was a bleak lie he wished not to believe. Looking across the lake he saw the glowing green light. He realized he could sum up everything he said in one sentence.

She does not love me old sport...she is in love with money.

Dubliner watched as passerby after passerby ignored Doria or even ridiculed her for what she said. After watching his good friend Gatsby so eloquently sum up the ideas and feelings of the majority of mobsters across the United States, Dubliner couldn't help but feel like he should chime in. Gatsby continued staring at the green light across the lake. It flashed slowly over and over in a methodical and mystical manner which mesmerized the man... Dubliner straightened his vest and stepped past him over to Doria.

He steps up to Doria and takes his hat off and bows to her.

My dear, always remember that no matter what people may say about you or to you, only you can give material for them to use against you. Always hold yourself to a high stature and people won't be able to touch you with their spiteful words. It doesn't take a strong person to stand up for themselves; on the contrary, it takes superhuman strength to stand up for others. However, in this world, often it is the selfish who succeed; the unsung heroes are those who are selfless in their ways. Handing out money to those who honestly need it, helping those who are new to these streets, and encouraging one to always keep their voice when others may try to silence it. It's a powerful thing, the human tongue, capable of breaking hearts, causing wars, and leading people to their own demise. Many people take the responsibility that was given to them when our merciful god gave them a tongue too lightly...

All this to say, my dear, though common courtesy may not be as common as it once was. Thanks to people like you, Common Courtesy shall never go dormant. Don't let anyone try to dissuade you from such acts as you can be the candle in a dark room for someone, rather than the tape over their mouths and the bindings on their wrists...

With this, Dubliner sat his hat back atop his head and excused himself from the young lady's presence.
