Jail Counter Started by: Ragnarok on Aug 23, '09 09:31

I noticed yesterday that it disapeared. I thought maybe I was having a computer issue, but Im on another computer today and its no there. Any word on what happened and if its coming back?

The counter has been removed for all users.

It will be available again, but only for users who 'purchase' or 'rent' the right to use it. This will be part of a package which includes access to the most popular of the toolbars and other, as yet unknown, benefits. The package will cost a number of credits each week/month.. but the details of this have yet to be confirmed.

I find this idea mildly depressing. I pay for features on several sites so I understand the idea of Premium features for paying users, but why not make NEW Premium features that we pay for rather than taking away features we are used to and making us pay to get them back.

I'm sure this will eventually bring the site much needed revenue but until this is explained better, so far it sounds like we're getting chintzed.

Report Post Tip

I agree with Naomi, they should just add new features that you have to pay for, and not remove things that regular users already have. But the good thing for me is, I hardly ever used the user count, so it doesn't effect me much.

Report Post Tip

Everything is changing! Whether its in the cities or game options, we are having to pay for things that used to be free. I understand the thought behind it but you have to keep your game on to keep up.

Report Post Tip

Well, the toolbar was introduced as something that was going to cost credits. It was made public just to test it. You should be grateful that the "testing phase" took like forever. Think of all the credits you saved thanks to Squishy being lazy/generous enough not to care too much about this until now.

Report Post Tip

Surely it is a smarter move to make you pay for features that you currently rely on, rather than ones you have thus far played the game without and may not require?

The fact that you can still play this game for free (at the moment at least) is something you should take heart from.

Without meaning to be cruel, I think this game is free because it has to be.

Tallien, it may be a smarter move in terms of cashing in, but it doesn't make it right for the customers, which is what people effectively are becoming. I agree with whoever said it was mildly depressing that existing functionality was being removed, rather than the pay model being based around new features (which I'm sure over time it will encompass).

Still, if people aren't happy, they don't have to pay/play. As long as there's a choice of free vs paid, I really couldn't care less whether some options are moved onto a pay model. I have paid for more than my fair share of jails in the past, but those days are gone. I'll probably be kicking around here as long as it's free and passes the time, but I'm sure I won't be sinking any cash in.

This game does well as a free hobby. My expectations are different when I'm paying for something though. I haven't played it for years, but taking Warcraft as an example...that's about a tenner a month (or less?). When I consider how much you could possibly spend on jailing/toolbars/whatever on MR...it's not good value on the MR front.

That applies only to me personally, of course. Other people will feel wildly different and happy to pay certain sums for a bit of community/MR.

Another thing to take into account is that credits are sold in the market all the time. I guess it comes down to how many credits they will charge for the toolbar, but if it's just a credit a month, or even 5... What's half a mill for an experienced player in a month?

Also, there is a link to some free toolbars in the tutorial so we are not left totally in the dark either in that sense.

I know no one has really brought this up yet but im sure someone will so i will answer their question before they even ask it, yes im THAT good. We have been very lucky so far that MR has still been free, now im not sure how much Advertising costs but from listening to Izzy talk about it in IRC it seems to me like it costs a fortune, and if he doesn't make enuf money from selling CD's where do you think the extra money comes from? Thats right he has to fork it out of his own pocket. And not just advertising, i remember someone tell me that Izzy has 3 servers, and the hosts don't get paid in lollipops they want money.

So while i believe that a total pay to play might be wrong, im perfectly fine with paying a bit each week/month to make sure that this game stays running. And the fact that we get extra benfits out of it is even better.

I don't mean to shit on peoples parades but welcome to trying to make a game. This game isn't that large to be honest. Halo has hundreds of thousands online at a time, call of duty 4 the same. It's part of trying to make a game and it's the risk. These features like the jail counter that they're taking away, we veterans didn't have before. We went off what we know and trial and error.

I'm not a fan to charge money for this but I know I can get by without counting because I don't jailbreak a lot in all honesty. The game if I'm right which if I'm not then Izzy has lied to me. It breaks even just about atleast that was before the new server and such. Now it may cost more but by the way, the more players = more money the game makes.

Advertisement is what makes games and this one needs more advertisement but needs money a.k.a. now they charge us for these resources. So it's a few bucks out of your pocket. I'd say at this point a one time fee of $5 U.S. depending what they take, so far isn't unfair.

I think this thread should be more about us telling the admins what to charge for than complaining. The game won't draw users if they have to pay to play and not use anything. There I know I'm right. So here's what you do. You create new features and better features. Then charge for those that none of us have seen! OMFGORZ! lol

Honestly, I'd pay to just have a damn counter on what tells us exactly how far we are from getting to the next rank or even how good the chance of hitting a target. Yeah that could cheapen some things but imagine how many people would want that. Also there's no way to let others use what you pay for those. Why? Because everyone has different start up answers and won't be exact on kills/wack answers/ranges... at least unlikely.

I have to confess that I believe this is mainly my fault. I had a (mini) argument with Izzy about the RP element of the counter, specifically the percentage givings and how it could be reconciled with the RP part of the game (probably mainly because I didnt understand it). I remember a time where our "gods" would say "keep count your freaking self if you are that bothered". It seemed to give an insight as to how the code of that particular part of the game worked as I understood his explanation.

I KNOW! I am a somewhat idealistic old skool player and I believe what I first heard that this game was built on. Having been a member from early enough on I was foolish enough not to rinse everything I was given that didnt make sense in the 30s mafia role play style and have now found cause to question it. For that, to those who truely care, I am sorry.

I ALSO KNOW! That this game doesnt run itself. Money is needed to run the server and I know at least a couple of years ago this was pretty much done of the back of a very (and I mean VERY) small few.

HOWEVER! I would like to add that IMHO money never "ran" this game. Those who had it contributed perhaps not as genorously as possible but nonetheless did. I firmly believe that access to the percentages allbeit a small insight, should not be able to be purchased. A counter maybe, but not the rest.

Again I apologise to those who are truely bothered by this. To Izzy and his staff for being so thick as to question something which I didn't fully understand. And to all who know better any inconsistancies within this text.

It's okay bud my bloodline I believe is the sole purpose the hitlist was taken away. My account Sc0pe_D0pe was killed by another leader for "killing too many IA's". Then about a month after he died they changed the way wack works. 1.) Because the refreshing was hard on the server which didn't change much I don't think. (They've changed it again already) (2.) Because when someone like me, ant, hoopi, mikado, figs, pig, and a few others are getting on average like 8-10 a day. It's somewhat unfair.

I say bring back the hitlist, I still got beat on 15 megs and a brand new computer. All about re-action time tbfh.

I think we should focus more on the topic at hand, rather than trying to put yourself in the group of the elite hitters.

Report Post Tip

I already focused on the topic at hand. Maybe instead of trying to be a wise guy you'll say something useful :)

When someone mentions any "elite" hitters (save for the Ox), please let me know.

Report Post Tip

Skate, your bloodlines have done nothing to contribute to anything being added or taken away here. Get off your high horse and get over yourself.

The question of why the jail counter has been removed was asked. I'm sure Ragnarok could care less about 'why and how wack has changed over the years'.

Report Post Tip

as a new player to the game, i was just wondering why. if it never comes back, im ok with it.
