Anthony sat at his desk, looking through the pile of paper, mostly requests for money, some notes hinting at vague threats, and of course, government advertisements for US bearer bonds. He shuffled through the documents, dropping those that didn't interest him into the wastebasket at his feet and carefully arranging those he wanted to evaluate in more detail later. An envelope, marked with his name in bold black script, caught his eye. Using his letter opening, Anthony tore open the end and released the paper within from its formerly sealed packaging. The contents of the anonymous letter concerned him, but he calmly picked up the phone on his desk, asking the operator to connect him with City Hall. Though still young in this world, his family had ties with those in power, and though rare, he tried to leverage those ties from time to time. A rough voice picked up on the other end, "Lieutenant O'Bannion here, what can I do for you?" "Grady, this is an old friend...You worked helped my father out a few years back?" Anthony ran his hands through his hair trying to find the words to say that wouldn't anger the already grizzled lawman. "I got a letter here saying there's going to be a crackdown by your boys in blue. I know the relationship between our two worlds is a little precarious, but this implies the Hoover boys are involved too, and they're looking at a global sting." The lieutenant cleared his throat, dry from the few minutes spent on the phone without being lubricated by some of the rough road delivered moonshine of which he was so fond. "Now listen here boyo, I don't know who this is or who you think you're talking to. But we got a job to do, and if I were you, I'd keep my nose clean and stay off the streets for a few days, you get my meaning?" With that, the old man hung the phone and LaPaglia was left with the sound of a click in his ear. He grabbed a cigarette from the case in his coat and lit it as he stood up, putting on his hat, and heading out the door. He had to warn the family and try to get word out to the other cities that a global crack down was coming. The jails would be full before the night was over. |
