It's been two weeks since the "war". The fog in his head since the devastation is beginning to lift. BigMike wanders the streets of Philly trying to sort through what had happened.
Why did so many die while I survived the attempt on my life?
BigMike stops and leans against an unfamiliar building. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a smoke. Gazing around in all directions, he lights the smoke and takes a big drag.
I've traveled to Philly so many times, yet it all seems so strange.
Just then an older distinguished looking man approaches BigMike. He respectfully nods his head at BigMike and asks him for a light. BigMike obliges and lights the man's cigar. The man takes a big puff on his cigar and exhales. The sweet aroma of his high dollar cigar fills the air. The man reaches in his coat pocket. BigMike stands tall in a defensive posture as the man begins to pull something from the pocket.
"Relax young man" the older gentlemen quips in a deep raspy voice.
The older gentle pulls out a gold flask and offers BigMike a drink of his perfectly aged whiskey. BigMike takes the flask and takes a big swig and hands the flask back to the gentleman. He thanks the man for his generosity. The older gentleman places the flask back in his jacket pocket and looks back at BigMike.
"You look a little lost my friend."
Knowing that any sign of weakness can have severe repercussions on the streets, BigMike snarls at the gentleman and replies:
"Lost!?, I'm not lost. Move on you crazy old man"
The old man smiles at BigMike and turns to walk away. He takes a few steps and slowly turns back to BigMike.
I have been in the business for many years more than you son. And many of my associates including myself have walked in your shoes. If you quit looking around this city with your eyes and start looking with what's in your heart and soul, you will find what you're looking for. When I walked in your shoes, I looked only with my eyes and it cost me my life.
The older gentleman turns and begins walking down the long street. BigMike looking at the ground begins to raise his head to ask the man what he meant. As BigMike turns toward the man he sees the man walking through the glow of a street light and then he is gone.
What the hell is going on? I'm losing my mind.
BigMike leans back against the wall. He shuts his eyes for a moment and looks down deep in his soul. He hears the words of his father. His father had told him when he entered the business that family is more than just blood. It's about mutual respect and undying loyalty. After a few minutes BigMike opens his eyes and it all seem so clear.
"I know what needs to be done!"
BigMike flicks away his smoke, straightens his hat and begins walking confidently to the HQ of his Philly family to show his respect and prove his undying loyalty. |
