A Little Determination Started by: Dusty on Sep 06, '15 23:53

Dusty had recently learned that she had been adopted. It raised some questions in her mind about her own worth. She knew that the people that had raised her were very loving and she loved them but why didn't her parents want her? She had brought herself down in her mood as she had been walking the streets of Detroit wondering about it.

She circled the lovely Library that was on her walk. Brushing her hand over the brick as she thought of the people in her life. Her friends who always brought her joy when she was around them. Some could even be known to get into the occasional trouble that they needed Dusty to get them out of. Her family were very loving and she enjoyed holidays with them. Now it was time for Dusty to see what she could do with her life. She wanted more than what she had now and she hoped that she could find it.

"Dusty! Dusty!"

A man was calling her name and tugging her out of her own thoughts. She flashed a smile as recognition dawned on her brain. Turning quickly she smiled and ran into the arms of her best friend, George. This was safety and freedom all rolled into one. George and her had plans for their future. They were going to be an amazing duo.

Grabbing the bag on her shoulder, she hung it more firmly on her shoulder and got herself together. Brushing a hand through her hair and straightening her dress.

"Ready to go? We have that meeting in about twenty minutes." She said.

"Of course Ms Reynolds. How could we possibly be late?"

They both laughed and started off on the path towards the nearest clothing department store that they could find. It was new that they would try to influence some form of design. Dusty felt stifled with people always trying to put her in those nice dresses. She had nothing against dresses but sometimes it would be nice to just wear comfortable slacks more often. Dresses, she felt, should be for special occasions so today was about trying to sell her designs in hopes that someone would be daring enough to try it.

She was nervous so she started to walk a little faster. George was used to her nerves so he kept pace easily enough while whistling a little tune. He was great at letting her alone until she was back in better spirits. This was a meeting she had been planning. He had just sewn the clothing for her sample pieces and was going for support.

Too soon they were at the door to the clothing company. Dusty didn't hesitate to open the door and stroll through them with purpose. Her insides were in turmoil but she would wear the face of a determine woman. Inside the doors she pulled out her portfolio and then presented herself to the receptionist.

"They will be with you in a few moments if you would have a seat Miss." the receptionist said.

George and Dusty sat in the waiting room for 20 minutes. During that time George ran her through her stuff and then spoke of things just to keep her from going crazy. Soon they were called and escorted to a lovely board room. Dusty took a look around and noticed five males sitting there. Her heart began to sink because she knew what was coming, but she had worked too hard to run with her tail between her legs now.

She passed out the booklets with her sketches that she had made so each member in the meeting could look at them while she spoke. Clearing her throat she began.

"Thank you for allowing me this opportunity to speak to you. What I am trying to introduce is slacks for women. While the skirts and dresses are usable, for the working women it could be a bit of a nuisance. Although working women is still a pretty new concept, I just want them to have more availability to set a fashion trend and be able to wear whatever is comfortable for them. "

Taking a moment to see the disapproving looks the board was giving her she sighed. Quickly her brain took control of the situation and she placed a smile back on her face.

"I can see that your company isn't into new and inventive ideas so I will just take my ideas elsewhere. Thank you so much for your time though."

Dusty gathered the sketches, shook their hands and headed out the door. She struggled not to trip over her own feet but she kept her back straight. She would just have to come up with another idea.

She stopped suddenly and George walked right into her.

"What is it now Dusty? A new idea?" George asked her.

"No George. We'll do it. I make enough money at my job. If you will sewn them together we could do this."

"Do what exactly?"

"George, think about it! No one else will try to sell these clothes so we can do it. I will make the designs and you can sew them. I'll find a nice quiet shop and sell them there."

George looked at her dubiously. He was always a bit skeptical when it came to Dusty spending the hard earned money she had been so diligently saving up. Dusty was always preparing for the future while George lived in the present, most of the time. This time he wasn't so sure her plan would work.

"Are you sure Dusty? Absolutely positive you want to do this?"

"Yes!"

Her voice held the determination he knew all too well. Dusty was determined and when she got that way there was nothing that could stop her. He shrugged his shoulders and they began devising a plan and a work schedule.
