City Bonuses Started by: Noah-Levenstein on Sep 06, '09 12:18

Any potential/assumed/rumoured/etc boosts that a character has based on their starting city has little/no relevance to any boosts they would get from their family home city. So has little to no relevance to this thread as this deals with city boosts far beyond just 'starting city'. The two are very much mutually exclusive.

Report Post Tip

PP bonus should be considered in the bonuses... LA for example ?

Report Post Tip

I would like to alter these ideas a little. Maybe, instead of LA getting the MRSE discount, NY could. After all, it is the home of the stock exchange. Also, in Vegas, maybe casinos could cost less?

Report Post Tip

An interesting premise Cicci, but my personal opinion is that New York and Philadelphia enjoy enough of a bonus as cities which bring increased rank points and increased money from crimes. To give another benefit to one of these cities whilst leaving the likes of Los Angeles with nothing seems counterintuitive to say the least.

I agree that a casino related perk should be in order for Las Vegas though.

Report Post Tip

I have done some thinking and came up with examples of what the bonuses could be, seeing as that is all this suggestion needs to be implemented.

Saint Louis: I can not really think of anything for Saint Louis, so I will just make a suggestion. Perhaps the bonus for Saint Louis could be either an increase to the amount of MIAs you can hunt, say 1 than normal. So, 3 every 2 days instead of 2. Either that, or possibly lower the cost to take out a contract? Maybe .75 credits or so?

Detroit: For Detroit, I am not sure this has much relevance, but being the weakest city, I think giving it the bonus of shorter flights would be appropriate. Perhaps a -30 minutes flight time for anyone from Detroit.

Chicago: Obviously, Chicago's bonus should be gun related, therefore, as stated before, a reduction to the cost of ranges would be appropriate.

New Orleans: New Orleans already has good drug trade, however, the bonus I would give this city would be a bonus to how many drugs one could carry. If you were a member of this city, perhaps you could carry 5 extra units.

Los Angeles: To be honest, I have to agree with Micheal_Giovanni on this one. LA is extremely close to Mexico and I am quite sure illegal immigration was pretty big in those parts back then. So, something dealing with Bodyguards would be appropriate. Perhaps a decrease in the amount of money it takes to train a bodyguard for LA members? This would make more of a difference than decreasing the cost of Bodyguards, because people train their BGs every couple days.

Las Vegas: The bonus for Las Vegas would have to be something dealing with a casino, therefore, I would suggest a decrease in the cost of buying a casino and casino games or a larger range of bets for each game.

New York: New York is the big apple. Home of the stock exchange. Therefore, I believe it's bonus should be something to do with the MRSE.

Philadelphia: Philadelphia is known for the contracting business, therefore, I believe it's bonus should have something to do with business threads. Perhaps more points for posts and OTs in the business district?

These are just ideas, feel free to comment, alter, or tell me why you don't like them.

Report Post Tip

I've had my own little thinkaroonie about this:

New York and Philadelphia: Already enjoy increased perks as a result of the experience and cash on offer from crimes, mucs, and jails. I don't personally believe anything else would be necessary, though I'm open to persuasion.

New Orleans, Detroit, Chicago, St. Louis: Admittedly, Detroit currently has a big bonus with the IAs but when this is phased out, the central cities don't enjoy too many perks. However, their central location can be manipulated by implementing either shorter flight times, or better drug ranges. These would be the logical perks considering the city's statuses as hubs, both for mobsters and the wider world

Las Vegas: The simplest one of all, a Casino bonus which could entail one or all of three things:

i) Cheaper purchase price

ii) Customisable rates and betting ranges for the games

iii) An 'insurance' system, if the vault empties, the Casino would stay open for X hours to give you a window of opportunity to refill it, as opposed to the instant closure in other cities.

Los Angeles: Whilst the idealistic part of me would like to stick with a business district related perk, I ultimately feel this would not be regarded highly by potential Godfathers; something directly impacting profit or character strength would be appropriate. I like the idea of a shooting related bonus, though cheap shooting ranges would only affect characters in the short term, Perhaps, when you launch an MIA in Los Angeles, you can specifically choose the location in which it would be launched.

Have being looking through the suggestions for a while and this is definitely one of the best.

Really do hope it is implemented at some stage.

I just had a random thought, sort of on a similar topic as this so I thought I'd share it to try and get some feedback. Remember before you say anything too harsh I haven't thought this through completely yet as I've just come up with it and wanted to get it posted.

So. City bonuses. We all know that Philly and New York are the highest paying petty criming cities. I guess the aim is to make all cities equalish, or at least give them all an individual bonus so that there are reasons to go to each city. So I was thinking that maybe petty crime/felony crime/MUC crime payouts could be altered a little. Basically what I am proposing is that instead of the payout being higher in two specific cities, it could be made that your Home City pays out the best for those crimes.

If you imagine in a RP sense your home town is the place you live, you know the people there and you know the best way to squeeze money from them.

Now I'm not gonna pretend I've thought this completely through, I am not sure what to say about cities payouts that aren't your home city (maybe make them all within a certain range of payout). But I was just sitting here thinking it sounded like a good idea, so I thought I'd share.

Afro.

Report Post Tip

Any official word on this?

Report Post Tip

Love this idea, But I think this should be a stat bonus on where you start and not where you fly. That's just a personal thought but I can't believe there still has been no Admin comments?

Report Post Tip

"I guess the aim is to make all cities equalish, or at least give them all an individual bonus so that there are reasons to go to each city."

I never want to make it so that each city is equal - they should never be equal.  There should always be an envy of other cities "the gras is greener in NY" for example. However, I am totally down for giving each city a litle bit of its own individual perk.  We just need to figure exactly whats the best perk for each city.  Once we get a decent list and support for at least 8 of the items on the list, this can be put in.

Report Post Tip

Hooray Squishy answers!

just a question, out of my little mind

whyd you want all the cities to be not equal?

pouts.

Report Post Tip

Often, the users are afraid to take risks, which leads to stagnancy in the game.  By having some cities "better" than others, there creates a reward for possible risk, in the hopes that users will keep the game from getting stangnant by having "power plays" in the game.

Report Post Tip

The Perk for all the cities fit...wow...good work...Im actually hoping this is put in Place

Report Post Tip

On my trawl through the Suggestions forum, I found this little fella sitting here all alone. I've always thought there should be some more incentives to make certain cities more/less desirable. This could now be expanded upon further with the addition of districts, with areas suited to a specific trade, e.g. The Strip, Las Vegas.

Report Post Tip

I wanted to introduce a very similar idea to this one, but looking back this was a much more thought out thread than what I would have done. To echo what the great big headed bastard himself said, this is a great idea.

Report Post Tip

Soooo, anyone have ideas for each city? (and possibly expand it into district ideas?)

Report Post Tip

I think the issue may lay on whether you want active bonuses that continue even after you start your character. Or just be given a bonus towards a skill or something then you first join and pick your home city. I'll try to make suggestions to both.

Chicago:

Sign up boost : Since Chicago is well known for the Valentines Day Massacre, a gun boost would be given upon start up in this location. (Granted that was always the rumor of when you start up way back, years ago...)

Active Boost : The active boost for this would be simply a bonus added to your gun.

Detroit:

Sign up boost : This already has the lowest Grain Alcohol in the game for quick starting up cash.

Active Boost : I think its already in place now with the highest Cocaine prices in the game. But with Detroit being so close to the border, maybe the drug prices change a little quicker or something.

Philly:

Sign up boost : Since Philly is known as the city of brotherly love, I suggest a defense bonus when you sign up. Nothing too big, maybe like an extra 10-15 to your base defense.

Active Boost : Again, a defense boost. Whether its an even bigger boost if you're in your home city or just from the city itself.

New York:

Sign up boost : Similarly with what I believe the active boost is already, I wouldn't change anything.

Active Boost : To me I've always understood that while in NY, you gain the most experience as compared to other cities. Along with that, you also make the most from your crimes. I think its fine as it is but may need to be balanced to go with the others.

Los Angeles:

Sign up boost : Unsure of a sign up boost.

Active Boost : Due to being close to the Mexican border, I think they're should be a larger amount of DFPs to be owned instead of 5 per district. Maybe up to 8-10 or something.

Las Vegas:

Sign up boost : A few free spins at the casino or a few free hands on blackjack or something. Something to help out when you first create your character.

Active Boost : Perhaps getting better odds over all like looser slots or even be allowed to bet more and so on.

These are just a few ideas I came up and by no means are they perfect. I just wanted to throw out a few ideas. Please share if you any suggestions or anything to add.

When I think about New York and Los Angeles I think Business. Corporate Headquarters. Entertainment Industry. World class chefs and Sommeliers. Cutting edge designers.

As an active boost for these two cities I propose extra experience for starting and maintaining a shop in the business district. I see it as an incentive to get owners active; and essentially building a familial community within the city.

Pros:

Busy business district

A reward for being creative

Extra experience

Cons:

Easy to abuse

Would need to enable exp for posting in BD

I have a skewed way of looking at things admittedly, but to me a healthy business district means that the game is in a good place. Someone taking the time to craft something - and then to keep it going- takes discipine. I'd like to see that discipline rewarded.

Report Post Tip

I think this is an awesome idea, also! It'd be cool to see some changes that'd make people WANT to leave the usual central city/NY set up for a west coast city instead but I understand the idea of not making the cities even so there's some envy and power struggle.

The idea of a start-up bonus and an active bonus sounds good but the active bonus should only apply whilst you're in your home city.

DETROIT:

From what LucaRossi was saying about detroit's active bonus... "Active Boost : I think its already in place now with the highest Cocaine prices in the game. But with Detroit being so close to the border, maybe the drug prices change a little quicker or something. "

Instead of the prices changing quicker, perhaps incorporate the idea that detroit was the industrial heart of the motor industry. The more cars available for purchase and or to be stolen, the faster you can travel between districts? Instead of the usual 5, perhaps 4/3/2.5 or something? That way the bonus to detroit's drugs will be much greater. (I'd also add the randomisation of starting cities if adding this bonus because the increased profit of the city AND higher IA count would be O.P A.F. imo :) )

CHICAGO:

Since chicago is well known for it's massacre-ish style of mobbing it up the idea that you get a faster or cheaper gun range for having it as your home city sounds about right. Chicago would still also have the higher drug prices compared to the cities of the east and west coast, making the change to the up and coming gunners still beneficial. However if people don't think ranges for those still trying to max their gun is good for the whole, then perhaps just a flat out + to the gun? or even an innate extra coin flip for those death WB saves? y'no, since they're so proficient at getting into shoot outs n what not.

I'd like to add that as well as these bonuses, both the central cities ALSO get the added bonus of never being more than a 6 hour flight timer away from their home city. Where as the west/east coast can indeed end up getting stuck with a 12 hour flight timer, or 2 6 hour timers in order to get back home. (not saying players from the central cities can't do the 12 hour timer too, but at least they can have a 6 hour lay over in their home city when going from 1 to the other)

NEW YORK:

As most people are already aware and are seemingly content with, the bonus that NY gives you the biggest bang for your buck when it comes to cash and exp for petties and felonies, I'd recommend it be kept that way. Along with that, NY is world renowned for being a city you can very easily get your ass mugged in, as well as pick pockets a plenty in the very crowded and busy streets and subways. with that in mind a boost to the physique stat for PPing and/or a higher chance of getting your gun jacked when the mugger beats your ass down coupled with a more brutal beating, because that's just how new yorkers do, so you have extra time added to your PP/travel timers compared to other places.

PHILLY:

Most of philly's activity through the 30's were related to imports of alcomohol, narcotics and loan sharking. since the only loan sharking operation available is OCs it could be altered so theres a much larger pay out for that specific crime by members of this city.  due to the fact that there were prolonged wars in PH during the 30's including in fighting within families this could have caused a heightened alertness to attacks increasing the defence of mobsters or the alertness could equate to better vision and info gathering of their city.

realistically, PH was NY's bitch at the time and the mobsters of ph probably got along with chicago only because of the bootlegging and imports but I can't see alcohol price increases/decreases being that much of a bonus to the city

LOS ANGELES:

As a high profile city and a tourist attraction and a place where vacationers would go to enjoy themselves, the local politicians and police would most likely want to either a) minimise the crime by keeping a tighter grip on the criminal activity, or b) turn a blind eye to criminal activity in order to boast "a safe place to be, see there weren't even that many people jailed here last quarter" to sucker in the potential investors.

this could work as a blind eye to the local mob and a toughened hand to outsider criminals coming in and causing grief for the local tourist board to the point that even if you've got a CA who is extremely influential in other cities, he doesn't carry so much weight in the city of angels and can fail to keep you free when you're caught committing armed robberies or trying to pimp out prostitutes. This means if people really want to come to your city and spend time gathering information and visiting the BD to maximise their vision to spot the stealthier mobsters and RIA/MIAs that were missed and are still lurking in this city, they'll have to get used to scratching messages on the prison walls and risk losing profits by coming to such an awful city.

LA was never much of a power house as far as the mobs concerned and shouldn't be made to be a disputed place to want to be, either.

IF however, it's decided for whatever reason that LA needs something a little more, just to make sure it's not so far beneath the other cities it's never used, it could be changed to house the highest exp gains for JBs. Since the locals would lose major business if word got out that criminals were being sprung left right and centre the mayor would ensure the finest training and incentivize the guards to do their jobs well.

LAS VEGAS:

Everyone knows LV and what it's famous for. Since the game doesn't give families the ability to buy and run casinos for themselves any more the only suggestions I'd make are what again LucaRossi suggested. The house favours the locals who would lead by example to the visitors "See me winning everything! pay NO attention to the fact I'm winning my own investment back and do as I do... insert coin, pull handle and repeat!" The small "house" cut for winnings could also be removed from dice. I don't really use the casino gambling games so I don't know if the house takes cuts from other games too, but if they do, remove those for the natives as well.

Along with the gambling, prostitution was urrywhere, and the girls were top dollar too. So a buff to the first felony that becomes available wouldn't be terrible idea.

There was mention of adding more of a bonus to business district activity, too. Since you can't own and operate casinos any more the next closest thing would be to RP your casinos and businesses. A small bonus to BD forum activity wouldn't be too shabby.

When writing this I tried to keep the alterations in keeping with the city and what they're known for and sort of RP-ish. I hope at least some of the suggestions are liked, I doubt all will be. However, it'd be refreshing to see something that makes the various coastal cities standout and gives the lesser used cities a more strategic reason to be occupied to break up the more common pattern of the masses huddled in the 2 central cities and NY.
