Bear with me, for I may have erred on my part; I haven't checked to see if this was already suggested, or is in the works already. [If so, I apologize for my lack of information.] I'm also a new player, and have yet to die, so I don't know about the money thing. ]

Basically, I'm proposing a way for characters to write up wills, which would then be publicly displayed at their funerals. The way I'm picturing in my brain, is that the will is written up beforehand, pre-death. If a character doesn't do it, no loss - it wouldn't get seen. Maybe even a way to privatize the function, such as the ability to make it display only for the character's crew, or select names that they input themselves.

Pros: A way to display last words.

Cons: Could be a tad complex, characters would have to remember to write up wills beforehand.

On that note, I have a second suggestion; a way to transfer money upon death. It might go hand in hand with the will thing I suggested. Say I were to die; I wouldn't want my bank account to go to waste, and therefore might wish transfer what funds I hold to those I trust. 

Pros: Bank accounts wouldn't go to waste.

Cons: Easily exploitable, lots of kinks, the system could be confusing.
