Pickpocketing - What is the purpose? Started by: Conway on Sep 27, '09 19:04

Now, I may be missing something huge here, but what the hell is the point of pickpocketing? Most use it as a way to practice, you ask for permission, you try the pp and you either fail or succeed. If you fail, then thats that. If you succeed, there is a slim chance of the victim having cash. And if he does, then most likely you'll have to send it back. But the max you can steal is 5k. Who cares? Every mafioso above the rank of Goomba will make more then that in a day. Hell, one drug run will net you so much more then that its not even funny. So whats the point? Is there a bigger meaning behind pickpocketing? I know there used to be mugging which was much better since the max of stealing money was not 5k. I started MR 27 days ago and counting and I still do not see a purpose to pick pocketing.

Pickpocketing is supposed to give you rank points too.

Report Post Tip

It is exciting and fun. Simple answer.

Report Post Tip

There is no point.

Originally a feature called mugging was introduced where you could steal lots of cash from someone and potentially affect their stats. They would also be unable to fly as their flight timer would get reset.

However, the problem with this is that players obviously did not want this to happen to them and decided that they would shoot anyone who mugged them, classing it as something of an attack upon their person. This led to most crews forbidding mugging and shooting anyone who was caught trying to mug anyone else.

This made the feature pretty much redundant and virtually never utilised, after all, if you wanted to kill someone you would shoot them, mugging them only invited death upon yourself. I do not know exactly when Pickpocketing became an alternative, but I would imagine it was as a result of the redundant nature of the already coded mugging feature. Therefore the stolen amount was lowered only to $5,000 and you didn't damage the person you mugged's account. This mean they wouldn't shoot you and most people turn a blind eye to it.

The only point to it now is pretty much for light entertainment or to get achievements. It has little use beyond that, which I am aware of.

In my view pickpocketing works perfectly in one respect and fails in all others. It works when someone stealth's you. You get PO'd and they get away with easy cash and a thrill. That is what the pickpocket is after all.

But when you fail or get caught the person you attempted to pick should have a few options. I should be able to walk up to someone I know and calmly tell them nice try while I take my money back all the while grinning, one professional to another. Or if it was some idiot I didn't like maybe I should be able to bust their nose and THEN take my money back and then some (or at least try to). A wise guy getting caught by a boss could result in the loss of a gun or something. Scale the potential retaliation to the rank discrepancy. I should be able to take the cash of someone who fails if I choose instead of the WB method. This way we wouldn't need all these rules about it and no one would ever have to die over it. There should be a lot more street level tough guy stuff to do without fear of death.

Without something like that the PP is an exercise in asking permission to steal from someone, it would RP out better to call it a shakedown and only let it work downhill.

The only part I really saw was this

But the max you can steal is 5k. Who cares?

What's the max you can get doing a Petty crime? A felony? Seems to me that this feature is just as necessary and WAY more fun.

Report Post Tip

Success! you grabbed yourself $727,

Success! you earned a total of $1,048

Both of these were in Chicago, which is at the lower end of the cash return for petties in felonies. Were I to petty and felony to the maximum amount in one hour, I would earn approx $14k in petty crimes and approx $5250 in Felony crimes; compared to an absolute maximum of $5,000 for a pickpocket. It's worth poitning out that these gains will also be considerably higher if more time is spent in the 'harder cities'

So no, from a financial standpoint, pickpocketing isn't nearly as necessary as petty crimes and felonies; and I'm fairly confident they wouldn't give a bigger return on points either, but of course I could not be certain of that.

petties and felonies*

It's late.

I enjoy trying to put my hand in VelmaKelly and Kizzy's pocket, its tons of fun.

Report Post Tip

The only think that makes Pickpocketing worthwhile, besides the points earned, would be the few timesyou get to take someone's money instead of being pickpocketed.

I'm unsure of what the term is for that event...critical pickpcoket failure?

Report Post Tip

The purpose of pickpocketing is to give you a handful of money by pickpocketing other person or by a chance of beating them when they tried to pickpocket you.

If they pickpocket you and it result in a failure, there's a chance that you can beat and pickpocketing them back stealing a great amount of money in their pocket.

This all depends to your base defense, the more defense you got the more chances they fail.

Defense increase by buying bodyguards but it will cost you much :D

But in more logical players it doesn't work :D, why?

Let's say if I we're the assailant and I see you are obscenely protected with bodyguards it means to me that I have a very low chance to succeed so I won't try to pickpocket you, just simple as that :D.

Hope this helps :D.

i'm quite new to the game...i know you have to be in the same city as te person but there are two things that stop me from doing it.

1. i might get shot

2. i dont know if you have to be the same rank

Can anyone help?

Report Post Tip

You won't get shot as long as you read and respect every persons profile if they are PP friendly or not, and also every city has rules in PP you can find it at the News and Info/ City Rules

And also you can't PP anyone that is 3 rank below to you and also 3 rank above to you about the ranking you can see it here http://tiggybitch.com/tutorial/Tutorial.html .

Hope this helps.

Report Post Tip

Yeah, I think pickpocketing is a good addition to the game.  As long as people respect pp wishes, it's just a fun game and a good way to rank up.  Oh, and if you're in a city which doesn't permit pickpocketing, force people to respect your wishes, and if they don't, bring it to your leader.  You're a criminal aren't you?

Report Post Tip

i didnt lie awesome and you knew it...one of my virtue is to being honest

it just happen you have succesfully pp me ONCE

:)
