Alright, I know this is a cosmetic issue, but I gotta say it. As a person who lives in Los Angeles born and raised, there is no place called Savannah here. None. It doesn't exist.

In fact, a quick google search reveals that "Savannah" was the name of a tiny settlement in LA with a railroad depot that existed for a mere 3 years from 1887-1889. It became a part of Rosemead in 1889. 3 years was how long it existed.

So, this doesn't seem to make any sense in the context of the 1930s mafia. I can honestly say that, of the 16 million people living in the LA metro area today, nobody has heard of this Savannah place. As an Angelino, it just seems pretty silly.

LA is MASSIVE and has a ridiculous amount of cool, historical districts in addition to Hollywood and Inglewood. You have South Central, Eagle Rock, Skid Row, Silver Lake, Echo Park, Florence, Compton, Redondo Beach, Venice Beach, Watts, San Pedro, Sunset Junction, Miracle Mile, Wilshire - you name it. These are all prominent historic neighborhoods just off the top of my head. In fact, San Pedro is the port of Los Angeles where all the drug trafficking occurs. 

Where this 'Savannah' came from has me baffled, but it certainly ain't Los Angeles.

I urge you guys to make a change.

I'd never heard of Savannah before MR but I recognise quite a few the original poster mentions.

Despite how small this may be, i'm certainly in favour of this.

Alright, I'm glad this is taking off. Looks like we're now straddled with the plethora of amazing place names to succeed "Savannah."

Compton does sound cool because of its notoriety today. However, for the sake of argument, Compton - in the 1930s - was an all-white suburb; not quite the birthplace of Biggie/Tupac as we know it today. I mean, I don't really care either way - anything is better than a fictional Savannah at this point. So, we gotta decide on what's cool vs. what's historically accurate I guess.

Venice Beach ain't a bad pick though, that place has attracted all sorts of oddballs since its inception. Loads of organized crime and weird people roaming that place. And bodybuilders... Lots and lots of bodybuilders.

Honestly I was just being sarcastic anyways. :P Because I could use a movie title. 

South Central would be a good one.

To be fair and correct geographically as it seems to be North Central South it should be 

San Fernando Valley

Hollywood

Inglewood 

As those would represent the most famous areas and stay North Central South

Oh God, the valley... I know we're trying to aim for some frame of historical/geographical accuracy, but let's be honest, the 818 is a shithole... and not even in a good way. It's just a massive run-down suburb with no mob history. The neighborhoods I've suggested, on the other hand, are true icons of the Southland.

Jack Dragna ran his family out of the Valley, the Black Dahlia murder in the valley and most of the "era" crime tied to bootlegging and trafficking was in the valley. Not to mention the movie industry has always been centered in the valley as well as the porn industry. 

the further south you pushed you stepped into Naval and migrant areas IE Inglewood and Hollywood has always been a false hood it has been the glits and glamour portion but very little is done in Hollywood as a whole.

Haha you are obviously not from the LA area. The Black Dahlia murder was in Leimert Park south of the 10 near University Park and USC. Do you know where the San Fernando Valley even is?

The film industry has NEVER been centered in the valley. It's been Hollywoodland before they dropped the land ages ago. The valley's only redeeming value is being the porn capital of the world for the past 40 years. Hence, "San Pornando Valley"

My undergrad was in film production and I worked for Universal some years ago. Studio City, Universal City, I wouldn't call that the de facto valley by any means. I'm talkin the area that stretches from Toluca Lake through NoHo, Sylmar, Northridge, Reseda, Chatsworth. THAT is the valley, man. 

I always thought Savannah was lame. If you want to go retro go Little Italy or even Lincoln Heights (If I've got the wrong heights someone correct me)

California

San Diego

Los Angeles

San Francisco 

Squishy

If you are looking at LA alone it would be something like this :

Northern Tip : Burbank / Hollywood (Burbank is further north more seed/ Hollywood is more south and glitz/glam)

Western Point : Venice 

Southern Point : San Pedro (Port of LA is in Pedro has always been a main entrance point)

Eastern : Montebello / Downey (neither hold really strong significance over other - just to most eastern points)

Central : LA itself

This is a vintage map original date I believe 1935 - San Pedro is and always has been very important part of the criminal trade especially back then for shipping and cargo etc. Hollywood being self explanatory and Burbank being the seedy underbelly of Hollywood. Venice has long been the spot Venice Beach, Boardwalk etc. LA is LA no question bout that its the eastern point of the area in question which is realistically although not wow factor by any stretch Montebello or Downey.

If you want 5 I would suggest Hollywood (North), Venice Beach (West), San Pedro (South), Pasadena (East), Downtown LA (Central). Seems pretty well covered there.

This makes the most sense since directly east of DTLA (e.g. Montebello, Lynwood, Downey) was just new suburbs at the time. There was nothing there and there still kind of isn't today... Pasadena was already pretty well established at the time, even though it's slightly northeast.
