So i have been thinking about this topic for the last past couple of days and i would like some other opinions on it. Let me just start off by saying i have to write a paper about this subject and i need other peoples opinions on the matter so that way it will not be completely biased. The question at hand is, "What is the purpose of our so called 'lives' and what is our ultimate goal that we are susppose to achieve in this life?" |

The problem with this question is it leads to too many questions, difficult paper you have to write, i will give this a try. I believe we are here to learn a purpose full fill some sort of Destiny or Task, once we have completed this, that is when we pursue our next life. We are here to learn, about what makes a person, how you become into your own. |

Yeah, tell me about it. The professor gave us a minimum requirement of at least twelve pages so i guess he wants us to work in most of the questions that the main question reveals to us. Should be very interesting. |

Read "The Ways of The Superior Man" by David Deda... He talks about the goals of the masculine vs the goals of the feminine in life.. |

You live life to the fullest and enjoy yourself and then later in life as you get older you make peace with god for those who believe and then you die and go to heaven AKA Sin now Pray Later |

I believe everything is already planned. You're just playing your part, that's only if you believe in a higher power. Some believe there's a God, some believe aliens from another planet created us as project, some just don't believe. Either way I believe everything has a intended purpose. Example: If you meet a girl and spend 10 years with her in a relationship and never get married, but love her and enjoy every minute you spend with her. All of a sudden you break up and meet another girl and marry her after one year in a relationship. The point is, you spent 10 years with the first girl and got alot of life experiences, wisher, rights and wrongs, all that. So when you met the other girl you already knew what to expect. That's how life works. You can use that same situation with anything, jobs, religion, anything. Everything is a learning experience. Once you encountered and affected all the lives you where suppose to, you die. No matter the age. You've done everything you were suppose to and there's nothing else. That was your purpose in life. Yeah, all that I just said. |

There is nothing that we are supposed to do. Only what we want to do, and what we actually do. |

And, seriously? 12 pages? I can answer it in a couple of lines. See above. But I could flesh is out a little: A purpose is an intentional direction. If I intend for the pen to write then the purpose of the pen is to write. If I intend for my life to do this then the purpose of my life is to do this. Different people intend for life (or pens) to be directed towards different things. Therefore, there are a number of different purposes (to life (and pens)). I might have a purpose for my life that differs from the purpose you have for your life. Or even from the purpose you have for my life. Even if some omnipotent, omniscient, personal, creator were to intend for my life to be directed towards such-and-such, it is still only be its purpose for my life. I (might) have my own (different) purpose. And neither is "more true" than the other. It would be a category error to associate such a qualification with intentional direction. Being that intentionality requires consciousness, it would be a contradiction to talk of "objective intentions". But it could be argued that this purpose is better than that purpose, but only if qualified according to what it hopes to achieve. It's nonsense to talk of unconditional superiority (or inferiority) of an intended direction. |

Without reading anything other than the thread title itself; I believe their is no purpose. 'Purpose' is a manmade word, with a manmade meaning. Guess what? Man made things are made by humans, and guess what? Yes, we are an accident. We evolved (no offence to all those religious people out there) from a bang of chemicals and hey presto! Hello Earth. It was all chance, not purpose. I don't believe in anything man made (words that is), i.e; Karma, because humans see what they want to see. I can blame something on Karma easily, however that doesn't prove Karma exists. I'm going off topic here, my bad. My point is that people see what they want to see, and believe what they want to believe, its how humans are. There is no right or wrong. I believe there is no purpose, its just all in our heads that there is such a thing. We have brainwashed ourselves; therefore have ourselves to blame. Doesn't matter though does it? We will all pass away one day, who knows what happens then....? |

As we can see everyone will have different beliefs on this topic. Having said that, a person intended purpose can either be what they chose or what was chosen for them by a higher power. That covers most of the opinion that have been stated already and even mine. Good thoughts Awesome and RRR! I think this paper should be easy to make an A on because there truly is no answer. Being a teacher myself, I think your professor is really just trying to find out what everyone believes. Should do well as long as you meet the 12 pages and hit the spell check. ;] |

Baby_FaceNelson, A YouTube video of the flying spaghetti monster does not prove its existence. Mayor-Herenton, anyone who can intend for life to be directed can apply a purpose to life. Not just oneself and some "higher power" (whatever that means). I can have a purpose for your life. You can have a purpose for your neighbour's life. |

Okay, well, I am a big believer of Science, We are here for one purpose only, and that is to ensure the survival of our species, now, I know that along the way we have to make choices, i.e. what to do for work, etc, but our ultimate purpose is for our own existance. I don't believe that we were created for a purpose, not by a higher being (god) or aliens, we were just like any other living organism that has evolved over time, fortunately, we've evolved so much that we were able to think and create things for ourselves as a species, we have the ability to make choices, and to create other things to ensure our survival i.e. medicine. I don't think that there is an ultimate goal, if there were we would know it from the outset, we just live, do what we do with our lives, make choices and then die. I believe that our ultimate purpose isn't just for our own existance in the singular context , it is the existance of our genetic line, by recreating ourselves...do we every truly die? |

AlleyTiger, you seem to switch between "there is no ultimate purpose" and "the ultimate purpose is to ensure the survival of one's genes". Which one is it? |
