A quick learning curve Started by: Cryptic on Oct 14, '09 12:21

Inspired by a particular set of events that occurred during todays life as a Right Hand, I'll try and lay this out as quickly and easily as possible to assist a newcomer to this world and maybe even teach a lesson to one or two of our older Mafioso too.

So let's set the scene a bit here. You wander onto the shores of this world and you decide that this is a place you want to go far and you discover a certain amount of ambition. Ambition is good thing to have, so don't think that I'm saying it's not, but it needs to be channelled and directed toward the right areas of your lifestyle. You find yourself confronted with a task of finding a family within 2 days of being in the world or facing death to the hands of accomplished hitmen who are looking to train their guns in the easiest manner available - by using unsuspecting persons such as yourself to use you as target practice. However, being the smart little chap you are, you've found a family whether it be because you responded to a mail showing you the ropes and assisted you finding a family or because you've gone out on a limb and found yourself a family and managed to acquire an invite into the fold. Step one is complete, congratulations.

Now you find yourself with the protection offered to you by your family, but you need to find yourself a bit of money to start running drugs from city to city! Ah, dilemma I'm sure, but you use your initiative and ask your leader for a small start up loan to get you on your feet. But wait, he doesn't respond - he has in fact gone for a short nap and isn't responding to your mails, and the Right Hand of your family has also gone AWOL. Now then, this is the point where I saw this young chap within the humble ranks of Discorso and we flick back to this individual's tactics - or should I say tactlessness. Upon finding himself not getting a response within an hour of his mail, he sends a mail threatening to kill the crew leader unless he receives some money for drug runs. Following this train of thought, he also sends a mail to the RH of a similar mould.

For any newcomers to our world, I'm not sure if you need me to point out that this is the wrong way to go about requesting a loan from your crew leader or right hand. In fact, it's possibly the least productive method of requesting a loan. You are not entitled a loan, and in some families it is unlikely that you will even receive a loan because the CL will want you to work for your money, not receive an easy ticket to your first few drug runs. The arguably most productive method of gaining attention from anyone higher ranked than you is by showing a level of respect to the person in question.

Moral of the story, and a quick summary: Respect will thrust you toward the top far quicker than threats - in fact, threats are far more likely to thrust you into an early swim at the bottom of the ocean.

A couple of issues.  I agree that respect will get you much further in this world than empty threats.  Though I wonder how far threats will get you if you have the muscle to back them up.  But for newcomers, I would agree that respect is the way to go.  And a great smile.  I find my great smile gets me pretty far too.

This issue of loans is interesting.  Why shouldn't these newcomers have the right to ask their leaders for a loan?  Should we expect newcomers to have to make their way right from the start.  I don't know.  My father used to tell me stories about what he would try to do with new arrivals to his family.  He would provide them with a small amount of start up cash, enough to buy the needed amount of any drug he so desired, coupled with instruction on how to use the money.  Leaders now days can choose how to assist their newcomers.  He felt that practice worked for him and his family.

More importantly, he made sure that there was always somebody in his upper echelon around to assist those newcomers with whatever questions they might have.  Unfortunately for the gangster in your story, a leader and his upper echelon cannot be around 24 hours a day.  So perhaps more than respect, this particular gangster needed another attribute - patience.  Wait a few hours.  Maybe even a day before flipping your lid and going off the deep end.  Because as you say, you go off the deep end, all you end up doing is swimming with the fishes.

While walking around the dark streets, I came upon a homeless shelter.  The homeless and drunks were sitting around the entrance.  As I came upon a heavy door, with a iron clasp doorknob, I opened it and walked to the rear of the room where another door stood with two heavily armed men were guarding it.  I walked past them, and opened the door... then proceeded down the stairs into another large room.  There on the walls were plaques on the wall of names of those who died.  I walked up to one, brushed the dust off the face, where it read "Ross89".  I paused for a moment, then looked to the one below it which I read... as i pondered the memory of these people, i wondered what their souls would be doing now.

I wondered also how many people must live down what their fathers, or brothers did in their deaths... since they are, afterall, their own people now.
