Leaving Palermo Started by: SaintAnthony on Nov 09, '15 16:31
Forgive me father for I have sinned.."

I've said these words too many times in my life. Half from the line of work I do and half from being raised by a very Catholic mother who tried to ensure her little boy didn't follow his father's footsteps.

My father died in Palermo when I was still in diapers. They found his tongue shoved down his own throat. Typical Italian Mafioso message. Don't speak against the Don. I guess you can say it may have been too late for my father to learn his lesson but having to grow up being told the story of my fathers death and watching my mother cry and say her prayers to the Saints always stuck with me.

I don't recall how life was before my fathers death. Couldn't tell you for sure if my mother had always been a faithful Catholic or if having to bury her husband for his sins made her turn that way. Mass and prayer were two constants in my life thanks to her, confession was another.

Knowing my fathers fate never deterred me from following in his footsteps. In fact, it probably made me desire it even more. After all, my mother and the Church taught me that confession would cleanse me of my sins.

By the age of 12 I was breaking and entering, 13 I was hijacking freight being delivered from the Sea straight from the dock. It was around this to me I earned the nickname "Saint Anthony". Given to me by my fellow up and coming criminal hopefuls, all guys around my age looking to be noticed by the Don.

Any time we pulled a job they would always joke I'd have to go find the nearest priest so that I could get in my hail Mary's. Thing is they weren't wrong. My other had definetely scared this young Catholic boy enough as I grew to instill at least that into me.

In 1929, aged 15 I committed my first unforgivable sin. I had to pull the trigger on a officer during a burglary gone wrong. My mother's tears flooded my mind as I pictured her crying on her hands and knees and praying as I'd watched her do many times before as I had grown.

I knew that if I stayed in Palermo I would face justice and be hanged for my mother to see. Despite her faith I could not stomach the idea of her having to see me die or knowing the reason why I had to.

So, I did what I thought was best. I returned him in the night to write her a letter of lies. I wrote that I had been offered work in America, for the opportunity I had to leave straight away and that when I could afford it I would send for her.

Before I boarded the ship that night I knew I must seek forgiveness. For my mother's sake and all she had taught me and for my sake, in case there was any saving of my mortal soul.

"Forgive me father, for I have sinned and it may not be the last time.."

These were the final words I spoke in Palermo, the last effort of a "Saint" looking  for redemption and of a sinner looking for a new start in the land of opportunity, America.

queenie finished reading the prologue of an auto-biography in the making. she wondered how long it would be until it came out in hardback.

"For a young man who knows that his own father had his tongue stuffed into his throat for talking too much" she began "you sure do reveal a lot about your own criminal past. up and coming jesus loving superstar, or established and feared mob boss... no one gets to gun down police and brag about it for long"

queenie adjusted her half moon glasses at the end of her nose, flipped the poster she had read and squinted hard to make sure there was no small print anywhere that claimed any and all characters and events are purely fictional. She didn't see anything of this sort.

"Considering the amount of informants in our world, disgruntled employees, kids left parentless after our selfish wars... coming out here and stating this to everyone so openly is no different to walking into a police station and giving this confession. One hopes your code of omerta regarding the family business is better practiced. Or else your son may end up running around Brazil, telling everyone the story of his father who had his tongue stuffed into his mouth for publicising his family's affairs and getting good people framed for it"

queenie passed the poster back to her footman who reattached it to the church's notice board and continued looking around the other advertisments to find out if there were any cake baking contests coming soon

SaintAnthony sits and ponders for a moment as he watches queenie. Before queenie can fully escape his earshot SaintAnthony calls out to her.

"My dear...ma'am, if you would. I was merely spinning a yarn, telling a story. I meant no disrespect nor did I find my story called for such to be given to me. I hope that you will take my apologies for loving the telling of a story and spare me hardship as I offer blessings to you and your own."

SaintAnthony smiles at queenie before shutting the door to his church

queenie didn't understand why SaintAnthony was apologising to her. She wasn't bothered by the potential for another tongueless corpse turning up in another city's rivers. she was meerly humouring herself after reading the story and pondered it's implications. None the less she acknowledged the reply with a wave of her hand as she continued on about her business.

Memento scratches his head looking at queenie, sets down his cane, sits down on a nearby bench and turns to SaintAnthony.

It's a lovely story that fits the beginning days for many of us who take this path. Welcome to America young man, it's rather unfortunate you have such a hard story at such a young age but it builds character. I'm sure you'll use it to turn the corner and make something better of yourself. If you have any other stories I'll always be roaming the local streets and parks looking for a good story teller to help me escape my troubles for a moment and the best ones tend to come from experience. Your demeanor has been nothing but appropriate and I wish you the best until next time, should we be lucky enough to meet again.

Memento nods to the Wise Guy, turns to grab his cane and gets one last word in,

Keep your manners, young man, they'll take you far in this life.

Memento then begins to slowly hobble away down the street.

SaintAnthony nods his head towards the man as he speaks before lifting his hand and blessing the man as he walks away.

"Shall many blessings fall upon you dear sir."

SaintAnthony closes his eyes and says a silent prayer
