| Do We Want the Streets to DIE?? | Started by: Jeremy on Dec 03, '15 17:32 |

This from HelpDesk: Sent as HelpDesk It was moved because your thread went out of character so it was moved to the OOC forum -
'I'm here because my father, Jeremy, was killed in the first wave against Duplicity. But I was the wrong man to die. Why? Because I knew what was going down and I was part of it.'
I have highlighted the issue in the second line above, your character is a new life it should have been he...not I.
OK, technically a slight error was made. But moving an entire character based thread to OOC for that? Are they stupid, drunk on power, holding a personal grudge, or just really fucking pedantic? Or a mixture of all of the preceding? |

It's really not complicated. Speak as your character, not as yourself. Proofread your thread before you post. |

I, for one, am glad they moved it. A lot of people have very little IC/OOC separation in this game and it's sometimes very frustrating. People go to the streets and use their family "journals" to go on long tangents about stuff that's all OOC knowledge. I mean, really? You ancestor wrote down all those little details about every part of their life? Admins taking OOC threads and moving them where they belong isn't kill the streets, it's holding it to a higher standard of roleplaying. |

Anything that refers to journals is fine by me. Referencing history is a massive part of our world. Without it we would live very boring live's. People like closure and reasoning for losing 500 hour accounts. You play the role of your ancestors son then what's the problem in eferencing their actions and reasons behind them? The streets need to be more than 100% RP. Otherwise they will be near close to death. To be honest I think perhaps there needs to be a separate forum for pure role play. The pure fantasy stories and not the actions of a character I.e war reasons. This would draw a clearer line where things belong |

Clay I also like journals, yet in the above example he spoke as if he was his father, not as if he was referring to his father. So in this instance, the move was simple due to the reason stated in the first post. I like this. If the streets are to grow, they need this kind of attention from helpdesk. I think the streets slip when people's standards start to slip. When people feel they can simply post whatever the fuck, especially OOC shite, then that's when the streets begin to die. When the gap between the quality of the older generations and the newer generations grows, then the streets slip, as roleplay quality slips. We need more of this feedback, frankly, and more open minded people that can take the lessons on board. If you can't handle a little feedback regarding your roleplay, from helpdesk, then maybe you shouldn't be posting in a roleplay forum. Open up, take the advice, and grow your craft. Or simply stop posting in the streets. I do like the idea of a 100% story based forum though, yet even if this post was in any roleplay forum it would still not be considered roleplay. |

| Pure role play is a niche pass time in this game | |

We have 100% story based forums, the business districts. While obviously having the caveat that it's a business of sorts, the threads are all 100% story-role-played threads. I would prefer that unless someone is making a super awesome effort for the in character aspect, that leaders and such just take the "Why we warred" and "We are authing so and so" to OOC, honestly. Well, perhaps not so much the authing. But if it's just going to be a very short, so and so is setting up, with a couple of lines setting some kind of scene, yeah, just cut out the half-arsed RP and post an OOC thread with it. The war happened for reasons kind of threads should pretty much just be OOC, they almost always devolve into slagging off matches, and very very few people attempt any kind of in character responses.
I don't mind the time trusted "journals" as a way of having knowledge of previous events on your character. That's been a thing on here for as long as I can remember playing, which is over a decade now. |

I enjoy listening to opinions and as well as being asked for my opinion. I am always up for a good debate. Here is my opinion. Whether in or out OOC, when a man dies they are history. Dead is dead. Too often when one arrives with a new character the role they are playing is nothing short but a new name. Vengeance is on the forefront of their mind whether the death was righteous or not. And this is where it gets heated and pitifully deadly. Wars today are not nearly as fun for all like past wars. Instead of sitting back trusting their existing family or alliance to seek vengeance, watching karma come into play, conducting business according to their new rank/character, and possibly mentoring the new guy, instead we witness and experience a self righteous character(s) on the move.
I know years ago, warning signs became evident a war was going to commence. As of late many have no clue and are being paid respect at their funeral. Bantering on the streets as to why, who or what took place. This not how I was taught. |

I agree Slappy, with the auth threads and war reasons. I skip past all the RP anyways to the names of who is being authed, or just skip the intro to know the reasons then read all the replies. It's definitely entertaining, yet it would fit better straight OOC without the fluff. I love me a good story RP, yet the auth threads just do my head in with the RP portion for some reason. Maybe I'm just lazy, or maybe it is half assed. I do like debates done in character in the streets. You can get some good RP going, and with a little creativity you can put your message across and set a nice scene that others can add to and help improve. |

I would love to type out a pretty decent reply to all that has been said so far but alas, I am on my mobile and have no access to a decent keyboard at the moment, so I can't be arsed. What I will say though is the moment war threads and the like are moved to OOC is the moment it becomes widely accepted that wars are taking place for OOC reasons and people are authing their OOC friends. Yeah being honest most auths are done that way anyway but still, it is played like they are authing those who deserve and have earned it, in which case it should be announced in an in character forum. Same with war reasons, they are supposedly done for in character discrepancies or fuck ups and as such should be announced in an in character forum. I to usually just skip past the half arsed rp scene setting and go straight to the juicy stuff and read the replies but still, it shouldn't be the location that changes, nor do I believe an added forum is needed. I hate to go in this direction but the streets was once a place where these kind of threads and rp stories balanced quite nicely... I don't think the streets need to change but rather the people, the community has changed the way they are viewed and their importance. Fair enough, people change and so do their priorities... But if it has survived the way it is this long and has indeed been a place where both kinds of thread have survived together in harmony before then there is no need to split them in to two equally disused threads. |

Whilst I agree that the street forum its self doesn't need to be changed and it's the people who use it who do, I have to disagree with PoisonousJelly on 1 of the points raised..
" it becomes widely accepted that wars are taking place for OOC reasons and people are authing their OOC friends."
It is, i'm pretty sure, already widely accepted that the auth a buddy scheme is how it's done. there are *SOME* occasional auths that are due to the merit of the character, instead of the person playing the character... however the fact is the majority of auths aren't based on character merit as much as ooc connections like irc, skype, fb, whatsapp and previous characters working together.
This latest auth is a prime example of the OOC nature of the auth thread. The author who gave auth, didn't even use the character name 1 time, and referred to the new auth (including in the title) by his IRC nick exclusively. then went on to tell everyone in a sort of RP style that a 33 day old capo had earned his stripes and ALSO had been there since when HBR was a young'n. there is no way this is to be considered 100% RP. The half arsed responses from other members too, are frankly so short and bereft of any 'role play' that they shouldn't be considered RP at all, either.
I personally think that thread should be moved to the OOC forum, and set a precedent that in future, for those who don't want to have to pretend to be interested in a RP setting, just go ahead and post the auth thread in the OOC forum.
As for the war reason threads. Again, I don't believe the reasons of a lot of wars are really all that in character, as most of the info leading to war comes through OOC means. However, I can appreciate the fact when the reason threads come out they're done in character, and usually well written as they'd need to be to at least deflect the potential flak of "u rite shit" from angry returning mobsters... BUT I think it's up to the admins to step in and become serious street sweepers. As moving the entire thread to ooc because of the amount of OOC responses is unfair to the original author. If the thread its self is 100% rp / in character then leave it, and delete the spammy OOC responses from it.
just mah opinion \o/
to answer the original question of the thread "do we want the streets to die" <=== the streets aren't a living thing, despite the metaphorical meaning, people will always play role play games there, people will always auth their buddies and *sometimes* try to role play a story out of the event to mark the occasion, and there will always be tyranical regimes to hate, heros to emulate and good and bad stuff to say about the happenings and characters about the game. The streets aren't going to die any time soon, especially not because someone didn't ask a friend to proof read their thread before posting it :) |

I feel as though it was in character, He said his father, albeit it wasn't elaborate, didn't add anything much...but he offered a good enough plot and had a point that we could build off of. So, this wasn't needed. The streets was fine. |

I have a far simpler solution. Allow us to edit posts like every other forum on the internet. Moving and entire thread because of one word is insane. |
