"Freddie! I wanna have a turn on the bike! Momma said you have to share!" The year was 1912. Thomas was still living with his parents, and his brother in Philly. They didn't have much, but what they did have was just about enough to scrape by, without feeling totally hungry. Thomas's dad worked in the old shoe factory down the street from their home. It was on the verge of closing, which would leave them broke and without money to pay the rent. His mother worked part time teaching kids to read, like Thomas and his brother Freddie, but mostly she just stayed at home cleaning up the place. Thomas was only 12 years old when it happened. His parents were killed when three men in fedoras and striped suits burnt down their home while they were sleeping. Thomas and Freddie spent the night at a friends house, so they were left in the care of their uncle Mikey. Mikey was a drunk, but he was also connected to the mob in New York. Apparently he was some button man that was running a bootlegging racket right here in Philly. When it got to the year 1930, Thomas had turned 24 years old. Mikey decided that it was time to send him to New York, to carry on what he had started. Mikey knew that this would give Thomas the life of luxury when it came to money, booze, drugs and whores. But he also knew it would bring him, pain, sadness and fear. He knew that one day, maybe Thomas would get shanked or shot in the face by some goomba or wise guy. When it came down to it, that's how most gangsters died. So Thomas was given $1,782 and sent on a train to New York. He was to be greeted by an associate of Don Rayln and Don Honesty. Mikey hoped that they would know not to be too rough on him, but to turn him into a man. Thomas wanted to make money. He wanted to make a lot of fucking money. But it wasn't always just about the money. He'd need the respect and loyalty of the men and women that he would soon be connected and associated with. That's what it was all going to be about. He needed to make a fucking good name for himself, or Mikey would end up pulling the trigger himself. Thomas was greeted in the parking lot of a coffee shop by a woman and what appeared to be a few bodyguards. He wondered if this was the gangster he'd be meeting. She didn't look like any gangster he'd ever seen. She had a look of significant importance about her. Maybe she was higher up the food chain than Thomas first imagined. He shook her hand, then introduces himself. "Good afternoon, miss. Names Addison, Thomas Addison. I'm Mikey Addison's nephew. I believe you're expecting me, miss... I'm sorry, I didn't quite catch your name?" |

As I am walking down the street I pass the train station and eye a group of individuals talking. As I pass them by I hear the boy say that they should be expecting him to a female surrounded my many others. It is obvious that they are her protection. I calmly walk past them and say to myself, "Welcome to the city son, good luck!" |
