After a nice vacation in a mysterious island called San Pablo de Ramirez, Vanbrilliance started thinking about the future of the new world. On the plane ride back to Detroit, he sketched numerous business ideas - all involving food, booze, and occassional women. Surprisingly, he managed to take his mind off meat, steaks, and lamb chops. He also forgot about the innate beauty of his hometown - Corleone, Sicily.
Before heading back to his humble apartment, Vanbrilliance took a short visit to his accountant - a witty and silent fella named James Bound. The latter is fairly new to the laws of money in the Cosa Nostra, and he committed few blunders here and there. Van decided that it's time to give him a short talk that may save the lad's ass someday. "Good afternoon, James." Vanbrilliance greeted Mr.Bound as the latter got up from his office chair. Van motioned him to sit down.
"Good afternoon too, Sir Brilliance. Are you going to make a deposit today?"
"Yeah, probably. But I just wanna talk to you...maybe catch up on things, you know. How are you?"
"Doing fine sir. Thanks for asking." James Bound closed his accounting ledger. He gazed sternly towards Vanbrilliance.
"I was not around when the filthy Durdens ransacked the city. Somehow, the streets are now clean - but I can still smell it. Death. Lots of it. Maybe some Durdens were chopped and hidden in crates everywhere."
"Detroit has many secrets." Bound replied, firmly.
"Indeed. But we're behind those secrets now, right? New secrets are building up today...and we...we just have to play it nice and do our best for our Family." Van smiled. "Anyway, I wanted to share to you what I experienced in San Pablo de Ramirez. It was a mind-numbing journey."
"I'm all ears, sir."
"So, I came in the island as early as 5 am...all thanks to that special ticket given to my by my friend, Rory. Once I get my hands on another special ticket, I'll give one to you. Anyway, these sun-tanned girls greeted me...the island is like paradise, yet I hate paradises. A nice and warm paradise lulls you to comfort, then all of a sudden...bam! You're dead. The girls took me to my lovely suite and we proceeded for a quick threesome..."
James Bound nodded.
"I unpacked few of my things. Hah! My antique Sicilian ring and silver watch was missing...it doesn't bother me that much. Maybe Bender - that gallant modern bandit - took it or what. Or perhaps I left it at Surveil's home. I don't know. Going back to my story...I had a breakfast...lobsters, mussels, spiced hams, veggies...t'was heaven. I took a stroll after breakfast, and I found something..."
"What did you find, sir?"
"Durdens." Van's face turned cold. Stone-cold. Like the face of someone who's going to pull the trigger, drop the hatchet, or push the button that will activate a complex bomb. "But here in San Pablo, they're not rowdy. They're proud of their 'Durdenism.'
"Durdenism??" Bound felt puzzled.
"Yes. They have Durden statues everywhere. Even banners. I know eyes were all over me, but I had to retain my calm. That's when I met the head of the island, Rodrido De Dios. He's a fat and bald man, but he seems joyful...damn, he ate a lot. Rodrigo told me that Durdens own large portions of San Pablo, and they're professionals."
"Unlike the Durdens of the city?" James asked. All these years, he knew that Durdens were a bunch of peace-shattering fools.
"Yes. These are realtors, semi-corporate Durdens. They wanted me to build a business in San Pablo and invite other mobsters in...but I don't know...I have a bad feeling about this island."
"It's a good thing you're back, sir."
"Yeah...I only stayed for few days. Maybe San Pablo is sending some of the Durdens here, or Durdens are just probably spitted out by Hell." Van cleared his throat and took out a check from his pocket. "This is yours."
"Thank you, sir." James viewed the check. Two hundred grand.
"That's on top of your salary. Now, keep your toes up, and gun ready. Durdens will always arrive, and if you're not careful, they might also mess with your finances. Our finances. We don't want that to happen, right?"
"Understood, sir."
Vanbrilliance stood up and fixed his suit's collar. He bid his goodbye to Mr. Bound and went out of the small office. One of these days, he's planning to return to San Pablo to look for...opportunities.
In the meantime, Vanbrilliance took a short walk in the streets, tipping his hat to other Mafiosi busy with their hustles.
