Goodbye to Tomorrow, Hello to Yesterday Started by: Denny_McCann on Dec 12, '09 20:57

Denny flipped up his collar as he leaned against the street corners telephone poll. Sleet was falling hard, stinging his face. He pulled his warn in flatcap down hard over his forehead, only his eyes peering through the gap the collar and cap had made. Traffic was heavy, there was an accident on this cold Detroit street corner. It would be a few before he could cross.

Staring kitty corner from where he stood, a small, out of business bakery rested it's old foundation. The shop was hardly recognizable to Denny, despite how long he stared at it. It's yellow sign, which swung intensely in the piercing wind, illegible now as the paint was mostly chipped off. It's windows, mostly frost covered, but where possible, Denny could see into it's dark recess, in the side of the city block.

Denny held his gaze, through one of the panes of glass accessible to his eyes. Under the discomfort of the weather, he allowed his mind to explore memories long ignored, in hopes to alleviate his duress in this Michigan December. Fixated on what lie beyond the glass, something inside began to illuminate. Slow at first, but progressively brighter, until it had seemed the light melted the windows blanket of frost.

When at last the light had expanded enough for Denny to see clear through, he noticed movement. Surprisingly, none of this alarmed Denny. He had completely let go and now something else was guiding him. The movement he witnessed comforted him for the moment. There was a young man and a beautiful woman with short curly red hair. She was smiling a smile so bright, for the moment he thought it might overtake his vision. It was evident that the man behind the glass was what she was so joyous about.

The couple teased and laughed with each other while apparently waiting for the baker behind the counter. This carried on for a time immeasurable by today's instruments. It carried on until finally the woman's smile subsided to a more subtle look of appreciation. She took the man by his arms and turned him to her. The light in the bakery faded, the only thing Denny could see now was the back of the man and the woman facing him.

Denny hadn't noticed, but sound was completely drown from around him now. His eyes were heavy and his mind weary. The woman in the windows face, now the only thing illuminating the room. Her lips split one more time. She spoke and Denny heard. "Denny my dear, we're with child." Denny felt his hand drop to his side as she slid hers down to his.

As Denny allowed his hand to drop, the wind picked up and stung it with the icy touch of death himself. Far quicker then it began, he watched as the light faded away and the frost quickly took over the window once more. Denny could hear the blood rushing through his head as his muscles fought the tears that wanted to flee his body. Even now, Denny could not enjoy his suffering, for shouting over took his state of pain, bliss, and remembrance. It was the Detroit police officer yelling people on. The car accident had cleared the intersection finally, but the wreck in Denny's heart remained.
