Coby Briar bent slowly, holding onto his hat, fumbling slightly with the clasp on his mailbox. He was expecting big news today, and he could barely contain his excitement. He grabbed what mail he could see with one hand and shuffled through it, resting the bundle precariously on his other arm (that was still holding his hat). He felt a slight bump to his right elbow, but as he turned, nothing was there; just wind, whistling strangely like it was calling to him. (He shuddered) Spooky...
Pink stood silently in a shadowed doorway not far away, counting the bills from Coby Briar's billfold. She smirked in spite of herself, reveling in the hunt. Now she'd at least eat tonght, and perhaps splurge on a motel room. It had been too long since she'd had a good sleep, or a bath for that matter. She sniffed her armpit then quickly looked around like someone might be watching her. Meh, that would be absurd. No one was watching her.
She watched Coby enter his house before she slipped out of her hiding spot and headed off to find some lodgings for the night. She stopped and picked up a bottle of whisky at the local bootleggers, figuring she should really enjoy herself and relax tonight. She contemplated grabbing some food as well, but decided on room-service, as this was going to be a night she would not forget for a while.
It was an hour later, and everything was going as planned. Her bath water was running, the steam filling the large, luxurious bathroom as she sipped on a tumbler of whiskey. Her belly warmed, and she felt a glow come over her. She slipped out of her unkempt clothing, and threw it in a pile on the floor, lowering herself slowly into the hot water...letting her body adjust as she took another sip of whiskey. This was it. This was exactly as she had wanted this night to go. Tomorrow could wait. Her life was good right now. In this moment, everything was good. |

Pink was awakened abruptly by loud noises that seem to be coming from the hallway outside of her room. She shivered slightly as the water had gotten quite cold while she slept. That whiskey had put her right out. She quickly jumped from the water, wrapping herself in a towel and rushed to her door to see what was going on.
Just outside, the bellboy was in a scuffle with a man in a dark trenchcoat, trying very hard to hold his own but losing ground as his head was pushed back against Pink's motel room door. The door suddenly opened behind him, making both men lose their balance and go tumbling into Pink's room. There stood Pink in a towel, brandishing a fire poker as a weapon, demanding what was going on. For a few moments both men just stared, not sure what to make of this sudden change of 'scenery'. |

The bellboy spoke first, after finally finding a way to put his tongue back into his mouth from seeing this beautiful, wet girl before him, in nothing but a towel.
"Ma'am, I saw this guy snooping around your door and when I questioned him, he attacked me. I was not trying to make any trouble for you, I swear!"
Pink groaned inwardly at the miss-placed title.
"Please do NOT call me 'Ma'am'. That's what people call my mother, God rest her soul."
Pink looked over toward the other man, who looked much shadier than the bellboy, and was creeping, ever so slowly, toward the still open doorway.
"Not so fast, Mister! You have some explaining to do."
With that, she pushed the door closed with the poker, and stood angrily, waiting for his explanation. |

Coby Briar was on his way to the police station to report the theft of his wallet. The mail he had been waiting for had not arrived, and his day seemed to be getting worse by the minute. He really couldn't see it getting any worse. That would be where he'd be wrong. As he turned the corner of Bay and Water Street, there was the sound of shattering glass, followed seconds later with a large man hitting the hood of his car, and rolling off stunned onto the street. Coby, in a state of shock, didn't hit the brakes in time and rolled right over the man, finally rolling to a stop as steam rolled furiously from the engine of his car.
Coby shook his head in an attempt to clear his now muddled head, and exited his damaged vehicle to see if there was anything left to the man he had crushed, or his car. He could see just from looking that the man was quite dead, and he doubted his car would ever run again. He wasn't sure what to do now, hearing sirens in the distance. He looked around frantically, but there was no one in sight. He reached into his car for any personal papers, and ran... |

The bellboy helped Pink up off the floor where she was roughly pushed by the dark man on his way toward the window looking out over the street to make his dramatic escape, although, demise might be a better word. Everything had happened so fast, but on her way over to the now shattered window, Pink noticed an envelope on the floor, addressed to one 'Coby Briar'. This startled her, as she remembered the name from the wallet she had stolen earlier. She wondered if she should open it, but decided to look at it later. For now, she really needed to get some cloths on. She turned to the bellboy.
"Thanks hon, I've got it from here. You can see yourself out."
Turning, she stalked back into the bathroom to don her cloths, realizing quickly, she really needed to do some shopping. Once dressed sufficiently, she headed back out to the broken window, noticing the bellboy still standing there, furrowed her brow slightly.
"Excuse me? I would like some privacy."
She turned finally to the window and assessed the damages. Hopefully she'd have enough left for shopping after this was paid for. She looked out the window to the street below, noticing the still smoking car, and no one to be seen around. She also heard the sirens, and decided quickly, she needed to scram. She really couldn't afford being questioned in this area. She gathered up what she had and headed for the door, noticing the bellboy still haden't left.
"Ok, I appreciate you attempting to help me out, a person you didn't even know, but you're NOT getting a tip. I'm leaving, and I'd suggest you do as well." |

A couple hours later, Pink was sitting in a cafe, eating a croissant and drinking a coffee. She pulled the letter out of her pocket and contemplated reading it. She found it so strange that this man had addressed it to the other guy that she had pickpocketed earlier. She noticed as she pulled it out that it was not sealed yet, so she cracked it some and looked inside. There was simply a note, saying
"Job was successful, leave the money where we agreed."
Pink pondered this for a moment, taking another nibble of her croissant and another sip of coffee. God it tasted divine, sinful even. Well, one of the two, she guessed it couldn't be both. Anyway, back to the note. It had her perplexed. There was money mentioned, but the location was not disclosed. Then a lightbulb went off. She quickly took out Coby's wallet and started to check everything inside. Maybe, just maybe, there might be a clue! |

Meanwhile, in the same cafe, Coby sat in the bathroom, munching on a croissant that he had stolen from beside the cash register. He had no backup cash, and since someone had stolen his wallet, it had made things difficult, especially now that he was on the run. He wasn't exactly sure if it was a crime what he did, but he really didn't want to have to explain it to the authorities. Either way, it would look pretty bad. He wondered to himself as he munched who the man was that he ran over, as he'd not gotten a good look at him except for a split second as he was rolling off the hood of his car.
He had to come up with a plan. Was it ok for him to go home? Who knows. He still wondered why he'd not gotten the message he was waiting for. It had been more than enough time for the job to be finished. Maybe there were complications?
Coby head was spinning, trying to decide what to do next, and he couldn't stay there forever. He brushed the crumbs from his jacket, flushed the toilet, and stepped back out into the cafe. He was not prepared for what came next. There she was, sitting across the room!! The target! Why was she still alive? Coby's heart raced inside of his chest. Obviously the job had not been finished. |
