A walk in the park.. Started by: Sledge-Hammer on Dec 04, '07 15:27
Inspector Sledge-Hammer, suspended, silently motioned to the bar-keep to set him up another double as he looked towards his watch. 5:12pm or thereabouts. Damn.

He'd been in New York for twelve hours now. Eight of those hours had been spent in the back-room of this Hardware store. Who'd have thought to put a Speakeasy behind a Hardware store? Well from what the barkeep had hinted at, the proprieter went by the name of "Crazy Joe." He could be as crazy as he wanted so long as he didn't interrupt Sledge's drinking.

Inspector Hammer had to applaud the ingenuity of the modern criminal. Back in San Francisco they probably wouldn't find a place like this until the 1980s. He had touched down at John F Kennedy airport early in the morning, sometimes around 4am. After hailing a cab, he'd had to perform a car-jacking of sorts when the vehicle turned out to be stolen and the driver demanded his money at knife-point. The yoghurt-eatin creep. Hammer would blame rock music, if it had been invented. However his .44 Silver Magnum never left his side and he'd got the drop on the would-be thief as good as any western ever made.

Holstered as it was under his Sports Jacket, it had a life all it's own. It would glint evilly in its holster when not encased in his firm and sweat-free grip, engaged in an aim that was straight and true. After driving the cab around for a while and even taking a few fairs, he'd abandoned it near central park. It wasn't like they were gonna dust for prints. And after an hour or so of walking around and taking in the sights, he'd finally admitted he was lost. Central Park was a lot bigger than he'd imagined.

Who would have thought when he parked up the cab that the damn park stretched on this far? After feeding the ducks and reading a copy of the New York Times, Hammer was getting frustrated. At this rate of going, he'd never make it to his dad's place. Jack-Hammer was top brass in the NYPD. He lived somewhere in Queens. In fact it was while asking for directions in the Hardware store that Sledge stumbled upon the drinking den. He never tried to avoid liquor, that was for sissies. After all, the law was more or less decided by him, a fact that was noted on file at the instigation of disciplinary procedures into his misconduct charge by way of excessive force.....Hammer downed the Scotch when it came and signalled the bar-keep for another..

"Crazy world, huh Joe?"
