It was Valentine's Day in New York, the weather wasn't the best. Snow and ice covered the roads, parks and old brick buildings that made up the great urban jungle of the big apple. Joe had just gotten off the plane from Detroit, returning home from a 'business' trip. As he walked into the airport off the plane his beautiful girlfriend Jamie was there to meet him. She ran up and embraced the 6ft tall gangster, wrapping her arms around his wide body. Returning the hug Joe smirked. 'Missed me huh?' She smiled up at him and gave a nod. 'Of course I missed you, I was starting to think you wouldn't make it home in time...' Joe seemed confused. 'In time for what?' She pulled back a bit and gave him a look. 'You do know what today is right?' Joe rubbed the back of his neck and bit his lip trying to think, throwing out the various answers of what a girlfriend might be upset about her big dumb boyfriend forgetting about. 'Uhm... Anniversary? No... Birthday?' She shook her head and laughed. 'No you big idiot, it's Valentine's Day.' She smiled more and he rolled his eyes. 'Oh, that one...' Joe had never been a fan of the holiday, with or without a girlfriend he saw it as a stupid holiday and a waste of time. Jamie growled to herself and pulled back from their hug. 'Come on Joe, it's supposed to be a big deal for a couple?' She started walking and he followed her through the airport. 'It is? I thought that everyday was a big deal for a couple.' He said with his sly Italian grin. A blush crossed her face as they walked outside and got a cab back to their house. 'Joe... You might be an idiot but you're a sweet idiot.' The ride home consisted mostly of Jamie letting her man know everything about anything since he left, none of it important to him. Stories about her co-workers, grocery store 'adventures' and the occasional reminder that she wanted him to buy new furniture for the house. 'Oh' 'Well, that sure don't happen everyday.' and 'I'll think about it.' Were his answers to almost every story she told. They pulled up to their street and Joe paid the fare, got out and opened the door for her. 'Well come on, hurry up or you'll freeze to death.' He put an arm around her waist and led her up the steps to their house, he went to unlock the door and found that oddly enough the door was unlocked. 'Jamie, did you leave this damn door unlocked? How many times I gotta tell ya to keep the damned door locked?' A look of horror crossed her face as he opened the door. 'O-oh, I must've left it open on accident...' He turned the handle and shook his head. 'Unbelievable...' As he turned on the light to the kitchen he saw a bouquet of flowers and a note on the table. He stared for a minute and turned back to Jamie, who had just shut the door and locked it, she looked down and shamefully. 'Okay... I know for a fact I didn't have nobody bringin over no damned flowers.' Anger was building up inside him as he turned to her. 'Well? How the hell'd the get here huh? They from you?' She shook her head. 'I didn't think so.' He grabbed the note and read it to himself. 'To my dearest Jamie, in hopes that that greaseball boyfriend of yours never finds out about our love. -Alex' Joe was shaking with madness now as he crumpled up the note in his hands. 'Oh... I see... for you...' He turned to her again, waiting for an answer, she started to cry. 'Joe... I'm... I'm sor-' He cut her off. 'You're what!? Huh? Speak up!... You're sorry? Sorry for what, for cheating on me, lyin to me? No, you know what. Forget about it.' He ran upstairs to their bedroom, with her screaming behind him, begging him, 'No, leave him alone Joe! He doesn't deserve this!' He was digging through their closet for what she knew he kept hidden, an old Italian shotgun passed down from his family from when they were farmers in the old country. He took it and looked at it for a moment then nodded, putting it back. 'You know somethin? You're right, he don't deserve that.' He walked across the room and grabbed a wooden baseball bat that he kept by the nightstand. 'This one, yeah I think so.' She was in a mess of tears and running makeup, begging him not to hurt her lover. Once again saying he didn't deserve it. And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.’ He also grabbed extra ammo out of the nightstand for his 44. Colt revolver, the she tried to stop him one last time. Standing in the doorway. ‘Get outta my way.’ She tried to push him and he simply pushed her aside. ‘When I get back, you better not be here…’ With a bat in hand and a gun in his coat he walked back out onto the streets, but not before grabbing the flowers off the kitchen table and taking them with him. He knew who this Alex guy was, some manager at Jamie's job. He was a real scumbag, the kinda guy who gets off by messing around with other men’s wives and harassing his female employees. She worked at a department store downtown in Manhattan, not a very big place but big enough to stay in business. He walked up to the door and found it was locked, he saw a light on in one of the offices. Using the bat he broke through the glass doors and walked into the building, immediately finding the stairs and marching up to the office, a girl maybe sixteen years old at most was scrambling out in an embarrassed rush from the office, trying to get her clothes back on, Joe shook his head knowing all about this sick bastard and his kinks. The time had come for this guy to be cut down, it was for the betterment of the city really, he told himself as he threw the door open. Alex was inside, smoking a cigarette in his chair. Wearing a pair of dress pants and a dress shirt that was unbuttoned. He looked in terror at the 6 foot tall, 245 pound Italian menace that had broken into his store. ‘J-Joe!? What the hell are you doing in here?’ Joe approached him slowly, bat in hand. ‘I should be asking you what that little girl was doing in here… or even better, what you and Jamie do in here. But I think I figured out the answers to those questions already.’ Alex backed up against the wall and begged. ‘Joe… c-come on, she came onto me man, w-what was I supposed to do? Just, sit here an-’ ‘Shut up…’ Joe growled and Alex stared at the bat. ‘What are you gonna do Joe…’ With a smile Joe pulled the bat back. ‘God’s work.’ Alex let out a scream that was cut short by the sharp crack of cedar against a skull, a sound that split the night, echoing through the streets. When the police arrived, they found the body with a crushed skull and a bouquet of flowers lying on it’s chest. Meanwhile, Joe went home, grabbed a beer, and read the paper.
