GAME CHANGE: Hardcoded help for under 48s. Started by: Squishy on Jan 06, '10 11:36

A few crewleaders expressed their dissatisfaction with the under 48 rule being enforced by crewleaders, rather than by code.  So after weighing all the alternatives, we figured the best way to offer protection for unsponsored under 48 hour old characters without taking away the ability for players to make judgement calls on their own - was to institute a hybrid of the existing player rules and some admin code.

As of now, if you shoot an under 48 hour old character, who has never wacked, and is not in a crew - you lose 1 kill off of your gun.  This enables anyone to kill an under 48 if they chose to - but also affords a layer of protection for new players to get into a crew - for it no longer benefits anyone to hunt the 60 second list looking for under 48s.

1 kill in the grand scheme of thing is nothing.  If there is some who needs to die, kill them.  This simply stops the players who would hunt the 60 second list on a regular basis once their crews no longer enforce the 48 hour rule.

Report Post Tip

Who hunts for -48s on the 60 Seconds List anyway? Morons

A question though. What if say a Boss with 0 kills and a few ranges kills an -48? Do his kills start to go into the negatives?

And, if so, what stops people from making "super pros"? Someone with negative 15 kills would have a much worse gun than someone than just 0, right? Should lessen the chance that the person with -15 will actually Success!ing the intended person getting the pro shot.

Smack me if I'm completely off.

Your start up answers give you wack stats to begin with, so you wont be going into the negatives.

Brilliant compromise in my opinion Squishy. As always, making life easier for us bless you :)

I love this change. Major happyface from me to the coders.

Excellent.

Sounds like a great compromise to me - thanks!

Not that I'm all for the killing of -48's or anything but this has to get off my mind.

If leader's are hunting them down already what's the point of this other than to keep the userbase from taking a slight hit? I mean next will people who sign on after 5 or 6 days get an automatic cover for 48 hours simply because they signed back in but didn't know that they could be shot at without any effect?

I like this in a sense it keeps people from killing (-48)'s but still this was already enforced I don't see why admins are enforcing it.

Report Post Tip

Because people were complaining that they DID have to police things, and appealed to the administration staff and said it was their problem, not ours (as users).  That's why they tried to find a way to meet in the middle.

Well, the under 48 hour rule was a user based rule. It was and always should have been a user rule. The leaders who bitched and moaned about having to police it should take/should have taken a long hard look at themselves and realised that putting on the bold suit brought with it certain commitments. This being one of them.

I was there when the rule was made. At the the time this place was on it's arse. I actively encouraged this rule as a short term measure. However, the user base grew and the under 48 hour rule was no longer really needed. However, at the time (and I had died at this point and therefore had no say. Sad face) The leaders decided to carry on enforcing this rule and keep it there that little bit longer. Fair dos I suppose and there it sat for many a year. No-one ever actually having the bottle to challenge why this was still in place. Until CP. Who tried to remove it but were met with stiff resistance from the admin team and basically informed that rule would not be going anywhere one way or the other.

Thus. The -48 hour rule was no longer a user rule but a game rule. Many measures have been coded into the game to promote it. Things such as blue obits, -48 by the players name and double witness statements. They were all uneeded because if the leaders were doing their jobs they would be able to make their own desicions on these deaths and act accordingly. This final (I assume it to be final) piece of coding takes all powers out of the users hands. The leaders are going to be losing a kills galore if they keep having to kill some fucking moron who will never learn because he knows no-one will shoot him (one kill might not seem alot but with the Gangster D boost and the like, how many hitters are there going to be shooting these retards? how many will lose 5 or 10 kills over a period of time to ensure the one who shouldn't have won the great sperm race dies?) because someone will be losing a kill.

I understand the need to grow the userbase. I understand you don't want to see new blood leave. But with the levels of member whoring (Oh, hi, another subject) you don't see many people hit thug without a home. Unless they log in for 5 seconds, log out and come back 48 hours later (Usual argument). If they do that, and many did before this rule, the ones intrested in the game and with a slight IQ will go "Why did that happen? I'll sign up and go and check." ding. they learnt something there and rather than being whored will actually go out and ask questions of Bolds and Slantys instead of being letter bombed with offers of talks.

Basically, if you skipped the whole bit from the first line to here. I think coding this is taking too much out of the leaders hands and placing too much emphasis on new blood instead of those that have been loyal to the game for many many years. It was a user rule before and it should be a user rule now.

There is a whole load of discussion on this in the suggestion thread that started it: http://mafiareturns.com/comm/thread/78387

Bighead, you're right that if this had remained a user driven, temporary measure, then there was no need to code anything in. However, given the fact that it was effectively taken out of the users hands a time ago and - whilst dressed up as a user initiative - was an admin driven ruling, there is no reason it shouldn't be coded. To me, it's not about taking things out of the leaders hands, it's the fact that  if 24 hours is coded as per admin wants, why shouldn't 48 be? The alternative would be to remove it all and have users police it from 0 hours. I wouldn't be averse to that, though I acknowledge that would never happen of course...my aversion is to the fact that there is (was) this fuzzy middle-ground between 24-48 hours that was being needlessly policed by users when it was admin driven and only ever meant to be temporary I believe.
