Lemmy stared into the eyes of Il_Siciliano,
and blinked.  Il_Siciliano didn't.

The ringing in Lemmy's ears
subsided just enough fo him to make out the sound of screeching tyres fading
into the distance.  Lemmy heard the
sounds of the busy freeway rush back in, like a tide sweeping over jagged
rocks, filling the muffled void that had deafened him for an eternity of
seconds.  Il_Siciliano didn't.

Lemmy took a halting breath,
pleasantly surprised, in a detached, philosophical way, that he was still able
to.  Il_Siciliano didn't.

As his wits began to return,
Lemmy placed one foot outside the cage he had been travelling in, and then,
tentatively, the other.  Sniffing the
air, he smelt blood, and worse.  Casting
an eye over Il_Siciliano's bullet ridden corpse, lolling on the back seat of
the sedan next to his cage, Lemmy felt fear for the first time.  The man who had fed him, cleaned his cage,
and tickled his chin for the last several months was gone, fallen in a hail of
lead from a half dozen tommy guns.  One
solitary tear slid down Lemmy's face.

Just then, a shaft of sunlight
broke through the clouds over Philadelphia. 
One ray burst through a stray bullet hole in the sedan's roof,
illuminating the envelope on the dashboard. 
Lemmy squinted, until he could make out the lettering, written in a
clumsy human hand.  It read, simply,  "PoisonousJelly, Los Angeles".  LA was a long walk for a Lemming.  He'd best get sarted.  With a little sigh, he squeezed himself
through a bullet hole in the rear passenger door, and flopped inelegantly onto
the asphalt.  It reminded him of the old
joke, about the roadworker who sure liked his asphalt.

Lemmy wiggled his short little
tale, and began walking east, towards the pair of welcoming looking lights
heading towards him on the freeway...
