Upping the ante Started by: Ricin on Jan 19, '10 17:31

Long ago, it was decided that "mugging" was too harsh. Leaders getting complaint, after complaint of people losing money. It was such a problem that it had to be switched to "pickpocketing" and the highest amount to steal is 5k.

Though, I look around now at the city rules and see that most leader has some statement to the effect of

"Don't bother me with money disputes"

I say that we have progressed far enough to change pickpocketing. People now walk around with millions of dollars on hand, why shouldn't you be able to steal it? Without the threat of getting your ass kicked and robbed, there is no need for a bank. The pockets are the banks at the moment.

I am proposing that we revert back to the old way of mugging. A person would be able to take a percent of what the other player has on hand. Say 10%. So be it the fault of the player that they did not bank their money. The leaders would have to stick with the same attitude now of "Settle it yourself, don't bug me", thus making the banks a useful institution again, and adding a bit more risk into the world of theft.

Thoughts, comments? Please be constructive.

Personally I prerfair a maximum cap on 'mugging'.

Some people have Pick pocket friendly in their profile, do you think they would be equally as happy to have that if the maximum cap was raised?

If a player withdraws $3,000,000 to buy a body guard and gets mugged you get $300,000 can you blame them for "not banking"?

Also

>"The leaders would have to stick with the same attitude now of "Settle it yourself, don't bug me""

If the cap was lifted leaders might be upset at getting less money through tributes..

~ But that's all just my oppinion

I think things should stay as they are because the back in the 30's the 'mafia' had certain rules about which crimes members were aloud to commit such as kidnapping, this was banned because it got the FBI involved and attracted too much heat, also mugging and any other type of theft was also banned.

i've been ranting about bringing some type of street gesture into the game... im all for it... Applaude's

Report Post Tip

Banned? Are you kidding me? Thugs back then work the same way they do now, just though a different vessel. I'm sure that there was muggings back in the day, just as there are now.

I think its a great idea.

People shouldn't even have to say PP friendly or not PP friendly, in the "Mafia" you'd get mugged wether you like it or not.

The chance of someone Mugging you at the same time that you decide buy a bodyguard or spend huge amount of money is very low.

The difference between mugging in the game and pickpocketing in the game is that, generally, mugging was viewed as a personal attack and pickpocketing is not. Pickpocketing was introduced, I believe, with the intention of it being an entirely harmless action. People can pickpocket each other back and forth for shits and giggles. A mugging, though, is an attack and would usually result in the killing of the attacker.

If mugging is introduce as a way to beat someone up and take a large percentage of their money on hand while potentially damaging their defense, it would almost never be used since it would almost certainly be outlawed by the majority of the cities, I would hypothesize.

Yes, thugs did do muggings but well respected mafioso would never mug anyone for pocket change.

Report Post Tip

Then let's up the amount you can pickpocket. I did not intend for it be an attack, kinda missed my point. No damage done, just more money taken. If people want to walk around with $10 mil on hand, why wouldn't an experienced pickpocket be able to snatch a decent amount of it?

Interesting, not sure if I'd like it or not. In reality Mafioso didnt go around mugging one another, the jerks on the streets perhaps but not one another.  It just wasn't a respectable thing to do.  Then a part of me thinks, well what if one group of mafioso didn't much like another group of mafioso, would they still avoid the mugging.  The part of me that like the idea would put forth -

Maintain PP in profit column, add Mug to War column.
Mug would get x% of cash on hand.

People could still get shits and giggles off PPing.

Mugging would still be seen as an aggressive action.

This would give an option to non shooters during wars to Mug (yeah i know Proers, but the option is there).

Also opens up potential scenarios of City A not liking City B so they start mugging their players.  City B may or may not decide to start shooting over it, but thats a heavy decision to make.  Do you think City C is going to support City B in a war over some muggings?  *raises eyebrows* ,aybe, maybe not.  But it could bring in a new factor of possibilities.

But what if you took a different approach to this, and rather than mugging make it a theft of a DFP.  Based on your stealth whether you are seen doing this or not.  The DFP owner would come on and see "X units of -drug- were stolen by an unidentified person!" or "X units of -drug- were stolen by -scrambled name-".   You could even base the amount your able to steal per attempt without being seen in a similar manner to JBs (exp).

I dunno, both bring more options to raise a little hell, both could be lived with or without by me.

I'd be happy enough to see mugging brought back with the increased limits and what not.  However, as has been said, from an RP point of view there's no basis in fact for MM+ to be mugging each other.  It never happened.

If mugging was to be brought back, it should be between associates (i.e. MM+ cannot be mugged) or MM+ mugging WG and below.  Whether this is enforced by the leaders or the Gods is neither here not there.

It's going to bring a whole lot of grief back though.

I agree with you Ricin i reckon they should bring mugging back but i would have to agree with Gary's little tweak, only made man plus should be able to do it. i can remember just before it was gone, mugging was a really good feature especially during a war. If you were successful not only did you take a decent bit of money ( providing the person had a fair bit on hand ) It also damaged that person and reset their flight times which made everything that little bit more interesting.

Report Post Tip

Aye I do like that idea. Adds a new element to Made Man.
