Take a swab, become a match, save a life. Started by: Squishy on Mar 29, '16 18:58

Today I received a mobmail from Syndicate, a long time user who asked if I could spread the word about donating bone marrow to a blood cancer patient in need.

https://bethematch.org/ & https://theregoesmyhero.org/ & for the UK: https://www.anthonynolan.org/

Unlike charities that are asking for money, these are asking for you to get a simple swab and to add your info to a register so that if someone is in need, they can reach out to you to help save a life.  The last line of his mail really resonates: Unlike charity's that make people's lives better though; this one saves lives.

Hey Squishy,

I'm currently in the hospital recovering from a planned procedure of donating bone marrow to a blood cancer patient in need. All I know about him is that he is from the United States he is 60 and has Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

It all starts with a cheek swab. You can join a registry no matter what country you are in. 7/10 patients with blood cancer do not have a match which is a shame because bone marrow donation is one of the best cures to completely delete blood cancer from someone's system. 1 in 540 people will be called in their lifetime once joining and it's an amazing opportunity. You will either donate marrow through a blood donation-style machine for a few hours or you will have a surgeon extract it from your hip. I'll be off work for 2-3 days. Piece of cake and I'll probably save a life and change an entire families life.

I'm not looking for praise, but if you could help me to raise awareness, it's an amazing opportunity for anyone willing to join the registry and like any charity they accept money if people would rather. Unlike charity's that make people's lives better though; this one saves lives. I donated through Be The Match but my family does drives for There Goes my Hero.

Thank you

Very cool! I'll have to find a location near me that does this!

You're awesome Syndicate!

Such an amazing thing to do for a stranger and your outlook is truly amazing. You've inspired me to do the same. I miss you and hope you have a speedy recovery.

Thanks to everyone who is interested in joining. Most people will never get the call; but to have that opportunity to save a person's life only costs a cheek swab and some paperwork. Many places will allow you to come in, but there is often a drive nearby that they can direct you to where a volunteer will do the swab. My family has drives occasionally for State fairs but the majority of them are in honor of someone or held to hopefully find a match for someone with blood cancer.

I've been on the registry since 2007! It's a simple cheek swab, you just have to make sure you keep your information up to date when you move, etc. It's so easy and for such a great cause. Hope your recovery was quick Syndicate.

I just finished the sign up process online actually! It says I will receive my kit in two weeks time, and that I do that at home then send it in and they'll have my swab and I'll be on the donor list. Very cool! Simple process. Everyone should do this.

Just to add to Syndicate's comment. I'm on the Donor registry here in the UK. I am a regular blood donor with over 100 donations. I've been short listed 3 times so far for Bone marrow donation, but haven't made the cut as there has been a better match available. As Syndicate says, you could go your entire life without ever donating, but its worth the effort to register for the chance to help save a life.

Willow_Rosenberg,

"I am a regular blood donor with over 100 donations. "

Do you have one of those sandwich club cards that they hole punch out a spot every time, and after 10 donations you get like, a free upgrade to large OJ and two donuts?

Report Post Tip

Nope, In the UK we get coffee and a biscuit (Cookie for you Americans) for donating. Although I do have a Silver and Gold donation badge and was taken to a Celebration dinner for my 50th Donation, and got a Crystal Vase for my 100th Donation :D

Report Post Tip

Damn. We barely keep track of blood donations here. I made the gallon club and then we stop keeping track. I think it's on my card but they only issue new ones when you lose the old one and they make you feel bad when you call for a new one.

Hey everyone!

It has been two years since I donated Bone Marrow to the anonymous stranger in the United States. Though now I know a lot more, after a year I was able to make first contact with him. This year, we contacted the family and planned a surprise for his "Second New Birthday" where I was able to meet him out in Michigan. There was a video if you'd like to see it: https://www.facebook.com/fox17online/videos/10156108592750540/?hc_ref=ARSLnuNtv0x1opEzYk-KSwh_4YLevCOoFobI1krIPwn5BjZT69DAE5-qPcDSR9XQNaI

If you want to learn more about being a hero for someone, it is easy to join the registry, a simple cheek swab is all that needs to be done and then, if someone in need is a match, you answer the phone.
