How green is 100% green? If you're building a two story, four bedroom house, you're already at the point that you've got a two story, four bedroom house that wouldn't be there if nature had its way.
If you mean going energy-neutral or better, yes, that is generally possible (but quite expensive). What tends to happen is that you'll still be plugged into the electric grid, and you'll need to draw power sometimes (such as the middle of the night when your solar panels aren't pulling any power) but at other times you'll feed the surplus back into the grid.
If you're considering this sort of thing I'd also suggest looking into your diet if you haven't already. The food you eat can be a lot less eco-friendly than the energy you're using if you eat a lot of beef etc. And of course, you'd want to consider placement of this house so you could maximize bike and/or public transport use, too. It'd be a shame to build it so far out in the boonies whatever gains you're making are being lost when you drive to the store or some such. |
