Roleplay Tips (Im looking at you Kates) Started by: Michael_Brizriole on Feb 10, '10 01:14

So I've been thinking lately. What happens if and when I die next? Well after seeing Kates' create a character thread its inspired me to make a full on background story (which I'll continue to carry on throughout its life) once I die. So I'm pretty new-ish to the whole roleplay thing. I mean I've done a bit here and there, but nothing to the extent of some of the awesome roleplayers on here.

So to start with I've got a few questions:

-Should I have any goals for my character, in terms of what I want to.... roleplay to the game about? Like, should I aim to have a full life story for the character, or should I just go with the flow and make it up as things progress along? Should I aim to make my characters story a masterpeice? Does anybody here have a forseeable ending for their character planned out, or will it end with their death from a war or something and if so, will you want to end it with a final roleplay from your new character?

-How exactly should I pass on information about my character through roleplays? Should I be writing stories and "telling" or posting them in the streets, or should, as suggested by Noah-Levenstein way back in september be posting fictitious stories about my character here in the OOC forum?

-How does one actually roleplay? Is it being in character through mobmails, posts and stories in the streets? Is it a mixture, or is it one single thing?

-Are there any templates (such as Kates' create a character thread) I should follow through to come up with my character?

Is there anything else I'm missing out on here? Does anybody have any other suggestions for me? All help is greatly appreciated. Thanks to everyone who constructively responds in advance, and I'm right to assume that making threads in the streets/ooc forums give your character actual experience to help rank up right?

Thanks again everyone. <3

This is just my opinion... others may differ. Take this how you want to.

First question: You don't have to have any goals. Some do, some don't. For me, and a couple others I'm sure, the characters kind of develop themselves. They'll tell you their story when they're good and ready. And planning death? Never a good thing, really.

Second question: You could weave the story into all your posts, or make an entirely separate thread. Up to you I guess.

Third question: I don't RP through MM, only in the forums, and only in the streets/business districts. It IS called the OOC (Out of Character) forum for a reason. :P However, I don't see anything that would stop you from playing as a character in MM if you wanted to.

Fourth question: Not really. You can follow it if you want, to get an idea, or just kinda go with it. *shrugs*

Anything else you're missing out on? Not really. It's like telling a story. :P Really, just have fun with it. It also wouldn't hurt to go peruse the streets, and see how other people RP, because there are different ways...

Hope this helps at least a little. =]

Of course you want to read the rules of roleplay engagement under the help tab. I think you should do whatever feels natural and go with it till it doesn't.

How can I ignore this? Here goes.

1) It's impossible to plan out your character's life. That's part of the beauty of this game- you never know what could happen. For example, I conceived Kates as the 18 year old daughter of MacLeod coming Detroit to make her way. I fully planned out many of the physical/intellectual/emotional traits she had to begin with, to get a feel for who she was. I knew she'd start in the business in Detroit and (planning ahead with another roleplayer) that she would eventually discover that her mother was Marietta. Beyond that, you just have to see what happens... how can you plan death for death by war or by wackback? And yes, if your characters will be linked it's a good transition to discuss the events of your old character's death from the new character's point of view. It's something I did with Kates, whose first appearance in the streets was "The Death of MacLeod". Let me close the book on Mac and introduce Kates at the same time.

2) Be your character in the streets and the business district and your HQ. If that means you're character has a long adventure with only you contributing, go for it. If it means working with others, go for it. Both have their advantages.

3) You ARE your character in the streets, business district, etc. The degree to which you become your character is up to you. Some people treat mobmails OOC. Some people feel like to not compromise their character, they need to try to echo their character in all things, even IRC.

4) It couldn't hurt, but there's no one right way. If you KNOW who your character is in your mind, you should be good to go.

Just have fun with it. And work with other people.

Thanks for the advice guys, and special thanks to Kates. :P

Anyone got any other tips?

just go with the flow. as a story writer in my spare time i can tell you that the stories you put on here will be concieved by you but kind of wirte themselves. you may have an idea but it may not be what you end up writing.

one other thing. if you're going to put a post of a story up, write it in a word processor then spell check it before you post it.

I have a tip - try role-playing something challenging like an inanimate object.

That character style is way to overplayed in this game ;P
