| After listening to the lovely speech made by Mr. Durden recently, I started wondering. Everyone is always talking about how young gangsters should be interesting, stand out from the crowd, speak English properly, etc.; in other words how they should compete with other hopefuls to gain a place in their respective potential family. But what about the families? Surely the families should be competing to gain the best hopefuls. One decent mafioso can be worth ten crappy ones, so why is the burden of competition always on the potential member and never on the families? What should the families be doing, if anything, to ensure that the best hopefuls pick them? | |

| One reason could be that unsponsored gangsters are pretty much shot on sight. A Family can survive without you, but you can't survive any real length of time without a Family. | |

| Elaina finishes her cigarette while listening to Olivero speak,, then attempting to pin her ,again, tousled hair, she steps up to him I believe that answer lies in the way that a family treats their members. Surely, a smart new kid is going to talk to people on the streets to find out about the different leaders and their philosophies and a family member who is treated well and has had loyalty and love for his family inspired rather then just required is going to communicate that. So, again, it would fall upon the shoulders of the newcomer to inform himself, although obviously the CLs need to make sure their family members would communicate such. | |

I got to tell you, its a very sad day when we have to pander or do PR for our family to make those out there want to join us. Thats a total reverse of how its supposed to be. You want to join the mob, you get close to someone in it...and impress them, maybe they recommend you to a capo and tell them that you want to be part of that life. They might send you an invite to join them as an associate. at that point you aint part of the family yet. You might get a job or two to help them....and if you really get things done, you might be asked to take on more work. Capiche? |

| I understand your point Denny, but the fact of the matter is that there are a number of families who undoubtedly want the best mafiosi possible. It's a natural capitalist reaction that when there are a number of entities competing for a limited resource, there is competition. We're not communists here! So, I don't think it's sad for families to try and attract the best gangsters out there. | |

| I think the means to go about recruiting would be to watch for outstanding members. If you see an individual that you think would work well in the family, contact them. Then you let them know what the family has to offer. Posting fliers isn't the way to go about recruiting for an organization that allegedly partakes in illegal activities. | |

Imagine this scenario, if you please... You're fresh off the boat, ambitious and looking for a Family where you can grow, learn new skills, and reach your goals...You work your ass off so people will notice you - the RIGHT people, not the Feds. And the offers might, just might, start to come in. Or will they? Because you're told so often that the crews shouldn't approach you, it should be the other way around.... But if that's so, how do you differentiate ebtween one crew and another? I guess you could visit a saloon, and listen o the convesrations there...you might pick up some useful titbits. Or you could look at the fliers littering the streets...what would you see? You'd see that the big cheese is a guy called Oliver, but alas he's full....Tyler seems to put himself about a bit...Sal is the reluctant Family head, but you might like his elequent speeches...Moretay is new to the game, give him chance and who knows? Ron Mexico? Well people say good things about him, but in public he seems all too quick to put people down...and Jay-C? Dunno much about him to be honest... So catch-22....you have to show the crewleaders you're worthy of joining their outfits....but why bother if you think you're selling yourself short by taking their invite? |

Well if you're FRESH off the boat, and don't have a bloodline on our shores, then it really does not matter which crew you join as much. Any crew that you join will help you learn your trade, and advance through the ranks. On the other hand, if you DO have a bloodline on our shores, that will greatly influence which family you wish to join. The idea of families actively trying to out-do one another for potential recruits brings forth to my mind an evocative image of families stnding around the docks like travel agents, holding signs with surnames on them to attract recruits as you might recruit consumers to a package holiday. Somehow or rather I don\'t see it happening. But let me take this milk-float race down a different path. I believe they don\'t compete with each other for members because the members aren\'t worth competing for. Anyone of actual promise is usually tipped a wink in a coffeehouse and all the formal details are ironed out in a whispered conversation. The vast majority aren\'t recruited this way because no-one knows them and their appearance is nothing special. But in fact some families DO compete on some level for recruits. I think Sledge, my learn friend, you have got to the crux of the matter. I suppose that families compete with each other passively all the time, through word of mouth and through their actions in the streets and otherwise, so that blatent advertising is not at all necessary to attract the best members. Concerning this point, I'd like to ask another question or two: What attracted you to your current family? Why did you decide to send a mail requesting an invite to your current boss over all the others? |

I think it goes both ways. I think a gangster should always use decent grammar, be respectful, etc., but I also think that families you try to do their best to get gangsters interested in their family as well. Just my 2 cents. |
