She came down from the Ridge, left her people, they were heart broken. Her features were similar to her mothers, she even had those rare icy blue eyes that seemed to bore into your soul and see the secrets that laid there. Unlike her mother she dressed in traditional clothing, she never wore shoes so she could be connected to the mother earth at all times. Although her mother was banished from their lands for nearly killing one of the boys who had tried to harm her as a child. Brigid was named after her mother which was tradition in their tribe, the eldest child was named after the mother and father depending on their gender.
Her mother tried to hide her native heritage , she said the white man accepted her better if they did not know. It was their ignorance not hers. Brigid was not of the same mind, she was all about her native pride, they were after all the real people of the land. Her mother was a holy woman and her death was devastating to the world they would never know her true gifts. Brigid on other the hand had been raised within the warrior sect of her tribe. Brigid would not hide her Indian heritage , she had Native Pride, she would die for her people.
She knew these city folks called her people the Indian problem. The problem, hell they were here first, thought Brigid to herself. She knew none of these whites would care what she had to say , but The Great Spirit compelled her. She grabbed a soapbox and dropped in the middle of downtown , Detroit. Stepping up onto it with bare feet, she enjoyed the feel of the earth under her feet. She moved a strand of hair from her face adjusted her feathers hanging from her braids, and cleared her throat. She knew none would care she was a redskin after all, but the Great spirit compelled her.
Don't waste your hate, the fire will burn you. Energy wasted does not serve you well. I will never forget the travesty , that befell my mother, all due to her loyalty. Many die for lesser reasons, this a grand reason to die. As one with a warrior heart , I respect mine enemy , not for the death he has caused, or will continue to cause. Simply to respect oneself , you must respect others. To know thy enemy is to know , oneself. Everything is forgiven before it happens, therefore there is nothing to forgive. AHO MITAKUYE OYAS'SIN
With the compulsion of the Great spirit drained from her body , her bare feet moved to the warm asphalt of the ground. Ignoring the derogatory remarks of her redskin. She quietly went back to shadows to carry on her mothers memory and stand proudly with native pride in the shadows of the criminal world. She would continue her mothers work, starting with her bootleg operations. |
