Cool to be a Wise Guy? Started by: HenrySestern on Jun 08, '16 20:36

Henry had spent most of the day puffing on a cigar outside one of the many establishments in North Side, Chicago. He would often spend his days watching the world go by, it was a tough life..

I look around these parts and I see a lot of old ass Wise Guys, like me.

However these old ass Wise Guys can carry a lot more drug units, unlike me.

Clearly they're very skilled at this drug pushing malarkey and they're probably pretty skilled in several other areas too, unlike me.

So this got me thinking - why are they the same rank as me?

Quite frankly I could only think of one real explanation. Actually, maybe another and you'll no doubt tell me it's the second reason.

  • The first reason is there's still something you feel like you want/need to achieve as a Wise Guy, make a few more bucks pilfering the graves of the recently deceased. You've been doing it for well over 100 days now but $15,000 is $15,000.. I guess.
  • The second reason is that despite all the work you've put in for your family, all the drugs you can hold and all the time you've been with the family you STILL aren't trusted enough to be bestowed with the rank of Made Man. You STILL haven't contributed sufficiently to get your button and join the other esteemed inner circle members. I do find myself wondering just what the fuck you've been doing all this time then and the chances of you ever being inducted when you clearly haven't done enough to this date. I'd probably just bite the bullet at this point.
  • No, I think the real reason is that you're selfishly looking out for numero uno. If shit hits the fan, you know as Wise Guy it's considerably easier to fly under the radar where family connections are concerned. You'd much rather lie low as a Wise Guy, slip in and out of the shadows rather than proudly walking these fine streets as man of honour. Perhaps that says more about our world, where the rank of Made Man is worth so little that it's better to enjoy the benefits of being a Wise Guy, well hidden and easy to move when your leader dies.

Or perhaps it's just cool to be a Wise Guy.

That appears to be four reasons.

Whilst staying a Wise Guy can help keep you off the grid somewhat there is something that Wise Guys can't do. They can't force their leaders into not give them their button, as such its a two way street if the leader is happy for them to remain an associate there is no problem and no disloyalty rendered. The problem would perhaps come if somehow the Wise Guy was telling the Don what to do. That is when the world becomes a crazy place.

I'd also say there are a great many people for who robbing a grave gives them a great thrill. They wish to gain the ultimate accolade in that particular area of work. It takes all sorts in the six cities, even corpse botherers.
