So, I'm wondering why Brooklyn is the center of New York? I tried to look for past threads but didn't see any or didn't search well enough. It's been driving me crazy since I started playing. Manhattan is the center of NYC and always has been. Brooklyn is huge, sure and it grew just like Manhattan did but it's not Manhattan. If you look at NYC gang history, for the first half of the 30s was run by Lucky Luciano, who created The Commission. He was based in Manhattan. When he was arrested in 1936, Frank Costello took over operations and ran a large family out of Manhattan. Sure, Brooklyn had a large mafia presence too during that time, there's no denying that, but it's never really added up to me why Brooklyn is the center of New York instead of Manhattan and I think this is something that should be looked at more closely. |

When the districts were made, they were assigned their areas based upon the physical geographical layout of the city that was supposed to be used in the grid. In real life, Bronx is the northern most borough. Queens is the eastern most borough. Staten Island is the southern most borough. Manhatten is the eastern most borough (Excluding staten which is technically more east, but is hugely more south) Which puts Brooklyn where it is... south of bronx, west of queens, east of manhatten, and north of Staten.. AKA the center :P

I live in NYC, I know where the boroughs are lol. Is Manhattan geographically west of Brooklyn? Sure. But it's just so....wrong...to call Manhattan anything other than the center of New York City. I mean, Queens is equally as "central" as Brooklyn is, if not more so, especially if you exclude Staten Island (Manhattan west, Brooklyn south, Bronx north). Does Queens extend further east than Brooklyn? Yeah, but it's still right between Bronx and Brooklyn. |

| Power wise, Manhattan has historically been the center of NYC -- right? | |

Not necessarily when Carlo Gambino brought the Gambino crime family to its height power shifted to Brooklyn and would stay there until about the reign of Paul Castellano which was the turning point. |

That's true but Gambino didn't take power until the 50s/60s. If we do the era change that was mentioned in another thread than Brooklyn being in the center might make more sense, but in our current time period the power was centered in Manhattan. |

N/S/E/W/C clearly isn't based on power though. It's geography. That's it. |

Sure, but like I said before, if it's N/S/E/W/C then Queen should be the center. The way it's set up, even using N/S/E/W/C doesn't make sense. Is the Bronx north of Brooklyn? Yes. But you have to go THROUGH Queens to get to the Bronx, so either Queens is in the center or the Bronx is changed to Queens. |

Yeah, it's not perfect, but it's the one that makes the most sense. Staten Island is furthest South. Bronx is furthest north. Queens goes the furthest East, and Manhattan is overall more west than Brooklyn. That only leaves the centre, which Brooklyn takes as it fits best with the game's system. It's not a big deal. |
