A Stranger To Chicago Started by: Benny-Matador on Jul 17, '16 17:26
The sun is high in the sky, the warmth feeling it's way down to the deep blue waters of Chicago bay. The seagulls gliding effortlessly on the summer breeze. Circling and calling out to one another without a care in the world. The waves of the sea clashing into one another spraying foam into the air. A trail of white smoke in the distances gives the tell tail sign of an approaching ship. As the smoke becomes thicker and the plume wider the ship makes its way into the bay. Cutting through the waves like a hot knife through butter. The seagulls swarm around the rear of the ship following the churning trail of water preying for an easy meal. The boat itself is colossal in size, with large broad white sides, rows upon rows of cabin decks mounted neatly on top, two enormous chimney tubes protruding out the top bellowing thick white smoke into the blue sky. People rushing back and forth on the deck, excited children seeing the city for the first time. Relieved parents and relatives embrace one another as their new life of freedom and safety gets ever closer. Among the crowed stands a young man, tall and broad he stand out above the rabble of elderly and children around him. He makes his way through the mass of bodies toward the ships railing. The man leads forward and peers over the side of the boat, looking down at the deep blue he sees small fish near the surface leaping out of the water flicking and cartwheeling through the air almost appearing to be excited by the ships very presence. The young man removes his cap and wipes with his sleeve the sweat from his brow as he gazes over the water toward the city coming ever closer. His eyes move slowly absorbing the landscape, the towers and buildings in the distances. The smaller trading and fishing boats bobbing up and down in the water. The young man reaches into his coat and pulls out a carton of cigarettes, lighting one and placing the carton back he draws deeply and then exhales a cloud of smoke in front of him. The ship begins to slow as it lines up with the dock for the final stage of the long journey.

After ten minutes pass the boat is safely secured at the dock and the ramp lowered into position to allow the passengers to depart. The crowd of eager passengers rush towards the ramp, bottlenecking  in the narrow passageway. Shoving and elbowing as each is as eager as the rest to set foot on American soil and begin their new lives. Ship attendants call out for order and attempt to organise the crowed into a line to no prevail.  A gentleman screams out in suprise as he is shoved and loses his balance sent tumbling into the water from the ramp. Several spectators cheer and laugh as he splashes around furious in the water, a plastic ring on a rope narrowly avoids colliding with his head as a ship attendant tries to rescue him. As the crowd thins and the sodden wet chap is hoisted to safety the tall young man strolls past the wet and angry man with a cheeky grin upon his face, winking as he passes. He stops at the top of the ramp looking down it to the ground below. Slowly he paces forward savoring the moments before he steps onto the Chicago bay dock for the first time. As his feet meet the floor he takes a deep breath as a smile begins to spread across his face. He breaths out slowly and chuckles to himself.  He has made it. A new life to be started, a place to lose old memories and create new ones. A new life to be had, new faces to see and people to meet. Excited he walks out of the docks and Into the first street he sees. Stopping a passer by he reaches out with his hand and exclaims
