It is Sunday afternoon, the sun is high over the city beating down on the heads and shoulders of the Detroit locals, people busily running errands and collecting groceries for the week to come. Among the crowed rambling down the high street walks Benny Matador. A new face in the city, recruited recently by one of the finest family's around the district. With a spring in his step and beaming with pride he walks casually through the crowed. Having just been to see his boss and drop off his weekly earning Benny finds himself at a loose end, walking aimlessly for a short time he checks his watch (13:20), perfect he thinks! At this time he can easily justifie a nice cold beer at the local establishment. Benny makes his way to a well known speak easy, a house of cards, drinking, and general mischief. Knocking three times at the back door a hatch slides open revealing a pair of leering eyes, Benny smiles and nods. The hatch slams shut and Benny begins to hear chains and bolts clicking and rattling from the other side of the door. Eventually with a final loud scrap and clunk the door begins to creak open and Benny walks in greeting the chap stoop by the door. The door is quickly closed behind him and the lengthy locking process to seal the door begins. Benny walks down the narrow corridor leaving the rattling and clunking sounds behind him. Opening a door ahead Benny walks into a big open room, to the left are poker tables with people sat playing and spectators grouped around the tables whispering and gasping at the hands being layer down, to the right is a long fine oak bar with stools lined all the way along. People slouching at the bar with half full glasses and big grins on their faces as the howl and laugh at each others drunken storys. The bar tended busily collecting glasses and mopping up spillages as he works his way along the bar. Straight ahead of Benny there are tables, chairs and comfortable leather sofas with people relaxing, smoking and for the most part talking a little light business. Benny makes his way over to the bar and orders a pint. Winking at the bartender as he pays his dollar and leaves a dollar tip, Benny makes his way over to the centre of the room and sits down at an empty table. Sipping his cold beer he begins to watch people around the room. He notices three very merry gentlemen standing at the bar, or more holding on to it for support as it would seem. Obviously very drunk Benny thinks to himself that given a slight breeze they might all fall like Domino's. Benny grins to him self and continues to sip his beer. A few minutes pass and Benny hears somebody shout "THAT'S MY FUCKING WIFE YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT YOU BASTARD!". Benny looks over to the bar where two of the three gentlemen now have each other held tightly by the collar of their shirts and begin to push and shove one another, the third gentleman has a hand on each of their shoulders and is trying to prise them apart. "Come on now boys settle down!" He pleads ad they begin to throw punches at one another. Suddenly with a loud scream one of the men throws the other into the middle of the room, crashing through a table sending glasses hurtling to the ground the sound of breaking glass turns a few heads in the room. A man sitting at the now toppled table stand up from his seat wiping his soaked shirt he shouts "WHAT ARE YOU DOES PLAYING AT!". The man who did the throwing still standing at the bar raises his hands and shouts back "WHAT YOU A TOUGH GUY? YOU WANT A PIECE??" he picks up an empty bottle from the bar and throws it at the angry bystanders feet covering his shoes and the floor in broken glass. Another gentleman from the wrecked table, already on his feet now runs toward the bar and tackles the aggressive drunk slamming his back into the bar, with a loud groan he gets back to his feet and begins throwing a barrage of punches at the other man. Benny watching in disbelief as the whole room decent into chaos as bottles and chair begin flying around the room, innocent patriots of the speak easy now become involved as fights break out around the whole room. Benny watches as chairs are smashed over backs , bottles broken over heads and he ducks as an ashtray goes whirling through the air narrowly missing his head and smashes into the wall. Benny holds on tightly to his glass as he watches two men in the corner wielding snooker cues duel as if they were medieval nights only with half the skill and a quarter the grace. With a loud snap a cue is broken across one of their heads and the man slumps to the ground nursing a split on his skalp. A whiskey bottle smashes near Benny's feet and he decides to take cover, flipping his table on its side he crouches behind it peering out at the on suing chaos. Several snooker balls crash into the surface of his protective table leaving large dents. Benny now on his hands and knees begins crawling from cover to cover with the exit in his sights . He sneaks his way past the fist fighting men and finds himself under a table, within seconds the table is flipped exposing him to a large brutish man who seems rather angry but equally unstable. Lifting the table off the ground and above his head his eyes lock on Benny! Benny looks up rather concerned about the shape his head may be left in after the table makes its decent. A loud crash is heard as a chair comes from the side wielded by an equally large and angry man, chair legs and splinters cover Benny as the chair explodes into pieces from the force of being smashed into the table wielding man's back. The table goes flying off to one side as the brute falls to his knees roaring in pain! Benny seizes this moment to sprint to the exit, he unbolt's the door and makes his escape. Walking down the street his nerves begin to calm as he brushes off wooden splinters and broken glass from his coat and trousers. Turns back and looks at the still open door and begins to shake his head. Benny sighs and says "I only wanted a frigging quite drink!" |
