A thud echoed throughout the small room as the briefcase landed on the table. Alfieri opened it with a click and grabbed the messy bundle of papers inside it before closing the briefcase once more and shoving it aside. After a brief check that he'd not forgotten anything important, Alfieri neatly stacked the papers on top of each other and stood silently, alone, breathing regular deep breaths. He flattened out the creases on his suit and pulled back his sleeve to check his watch. It was go time. With a triumphant stride, Alfieri pushed the door open and was met by the flash of a hundred cameras and the sudden on rush of a dozen notepads being thrust into his face by shouting reporters. After mere seconds, a pack of bodyguards (courtesy of MolotovMcHugh) had gotten into place and allowed Alfieri a safe passage to the stage, where two others sat in chairs either side of an empty one. On one side sat RonMexico, a seasoned Las Vegas businessman who had strong ties with Alfieri. There were rumours going around about Mr. Mexico; some said he was a maniac, some said he was a government officer, people talk all sorts of jibber jabber. It was once even thought that he was the head of a large Las Vegas crime enterprise. Oh how Chinese whispers spread. Mr. Mexico stared intimidatingly out upon the crowd of people who were now accumulating in front of where the three chairs were placed, beyond where his hat lay on the narrow table in front of them. On the other side sat NikkiPhoenix, widely known for her contributions in the MR Stock Exchange and as another associate of RonMexico's. She had been steadily making a name for herself ever since setting up the Brutal Phoenix Accounting Firm, as the co-partner and an accounting agent. As one of the most versatile and efficient business women in the industry looked out across the bustling crowd, Alfieri stepped up the three stairs one by one and made his way to his seat, in between the two. Alfieri placed the papers on the podium in front of him and put his mouth to the microphone... "The week just past had plagued me with decisions. I stood at a point in my life where I was presented with an opportunity spawned out of a tragedy. My boss, business associate, and friend, Mr. RonMexico.." Alfieri gestured to the man sitting beside him. "..presented me with the opportunity to expand our business. He gave me the choice of taking the reigns of the Las Vegas project and to lead it into further success and prominence in the renowned city. As with every good thing in life, there are negatives and that, I'm afraid, is the decision for my close friend to retire from this life and leave me to head the organization without his presence, something which both intimidates me as well as excites me. I am not the type of man to wallow in the helplessness of a situation but rather to seize it and make what I can of it." "With that covered, I would now like to formally welcome you to this press conference which celebrates the grand opening of The Iguana Corporation in Las Vegas. We've got plans, we've got money, and we've got the right line up to pull it off. We don't intend to let Sin City fall under the shadow of the other large cities of this country and we have ideas aplenty for this fabled city. Before I carry on, I'd like to allow my partner, Ms. Nikola Phoenix, to say a few words..." |

Her name called, Nikki rose from her seat and approached the podium to join Alfieri at the microphone. She leaned in to whisper quickly into his ear, and pulled away with her well known demure and professional smile highlighting her face. The reporters present were all too well known to Nikki and a select few she nodded and raised a brow to in recognition. "Thank you, Alfieri, and also thank you all for attending this press conference. We will be available to answer your questions later. But right now, I join Alfieri, the new CEO of The Iguana Corporation, in ushering in this new era for Las Vegas. Under the grooming and tutelage of entrepreneur and brilliant businessman, Mr. Ron Mexico, the Iguana Project has really come to fruition as the most successful and well known property management organization in Nevada." Still speaking into the microphone, Nikki turned her head slightly to look at Ron who still sat patiently behind the podium. "We are more than looking forward to carrying the Iguana name into realms of new possibilities and filling the shoes you're leaving behind. Its always sad to see a great businessman retire, but we know you'll enjoy the free time and reduced stress that comes with the retired lifestyle." Ever-mindful of the press and crowd now gathering to hear the announcement, Nikki turned back to the microphone and addressed the crowd. This is an exciting time, not just for the employees of The Iguana Corporation and the citizens of Nevada, but for our nationwide subsidiaries and properties already in existence. We'd like to thank everyone for their support and well wishes during this transitional period. Thank you. A diplomatic smile, a hug and a handshake with Alfieri, Nikki again faced the crows with a hand raised in wave. She was no stranger to press photographers and always projected the image of success when the opportunity to be captured on film was present. After a few flashes, she returned to her seat next to Alfieri's empty one. |

Alfieri stepped forwards once more towards the microphone, after allowing his partner to take her seat, before beginning to speak again. "This press conference would not be complete with words from the man who made this all happen. The man who brought me under his wing into the Las Vegas scene and taught me the ways of the business. I owe everything I have in this life to his man. Without him, I would not be where I am, standing here today. Without further ado, ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Ron Mexico!" |

Ron tapped his fingers on the table absentmindedly as he stood up. Alfieri stepped aside, clearing the way to the podium and the two men shook hands and shared a few brief, whispered words before Ron turned to face the crowd. With a look of feigned contemplation on his face, he tilted his head slightly to one side, cleared his throat and began to speak. "Well... What is there that I can say here that hasn't already been said by so many semi-abusive fathers? First off, I've got to say that I'm not at all disappointed with what the city of Las Vegas has become, but it still holds a tremendous amount of potential. Alfieri played no small part in getting it to where it is, and I have nothing but good thoughts about what it can, and most certainly will, become with his continued effort, and the effort of his corporation. I think I heard he's putting in a water slide." He glanced upward for a moment, allowing an abbreviated smile to distort his face. "People ask me, they say 'Ron Mexico', and I say 'What?' and they say, 'What's the perfect businessman?', and I say, 'Wow, what an awkward and oddly posed question.' But then I say 'Alfieri.' Alfieri is the perfect businessman. I mean, look at him." Ron took a step to the side, and motioned toward Alfieri. "He's wearing a suit and everything. Need more proof? Look at that stance, folks. Feet wide and firmly planted, shoulders back and square. That's a man's stance. And, and, and... he came out here with papers. I don't know what the hell they say, but I'm sure it's important." He stepped back to center himself, once more, in front of the crowd. "And business is important stuff. Please, don't let anything that I may be doing in the coming days dampen the meaning of this occasion. I mean, sure, you'll miss me. Some of you may not even want to go on living. It'll be much like the hero leaving the village, and all the pretty women crying over him and chasing after him, and the men saying 'Hey, I wish I was that guy', like in... that book. You know the one. With the, uh.. the thing. And... stuff... happens. This isn't about me, or who made what up." He paused momentarily, staring out at no one in particular. "This is Alfieri's day. One that he has worked hard for, and one that should be as joyful as the occasion deserves. Personally, I see a bright future ahead, with Alfieri at the helm. He's given me no reason to expect anything less." Ron stepped back, again shaking Alfieri's hand, on his way back to his seat. |

*A tear wells up in McHugh's eye, before he realizes that real men don't cry. An uplifting day was upon the community as his dear friend, Alfieri, took the stage for his coronation. McHugh maintained a stoic expression for the majority of the proceeding (because men aren't supposed to emote), and gazed upon Alfieri like one of the many the children that he had never bothered to claim as his own. From the bright overhead lights, McHugh could see a reflecting glimmer from under Alfieri's shirt that could only mean a recent chest wax. "Like fake father like fake son" (paternity test pending), he thought with a chuckle.* *McHugh sat restlessly for the majority of the event, due mostly to having forgotten underwear. He had underestimated the chafing of a light cotton blend. But fuck it, he wanted commando, and he was going to own it. McHugh felt heartily impressed by the speech his friend was giving, but more so at the fact that someone with Alfieri's ancestral origins had maintained a normal accent without slipping into a dolphin-speak fit. Finally the ceremony concluded, and McHugh stood and clapped vigorously for his closest confidante. Very vigorously.* I cannot think of anyone I would be more excited to see up here. Since general narcissism prohibits me from being "proud" of anyone but myself, I am feeling the next closest thing for you. Congratulations, Alfieri. A giant among Swedes. |

*Watching from the dark of the background Jasper stood, briefcase in hand, gently humming to himself to keep back the emotions that ran through him. If he would not hum he would cry and humming seemed like such a good plan until the man next to him dug his elbow into Jasper's rib cage. He shut up and listened on as Alfieri, Mr Mexico and Nikki made an incredible presentation, not for the loss of the past but for the surging positivity of the future, a future of which he is now a part. Nodding to Alfieri in acknowledgment of his achievement and again to Mr Mexico for the very same reason he stood solid and unwavering. Softly to himself he spoke* A new day dawns. |
