Fixes to the BG-Wack Mechanic Started by: Cato on Sep 08, '16 17:00

Remove BG Wacking, convert BGs to NPCs. (optional)

Rather than maintain this odd separation between wacking and BG wacking, just treat BGs as NPCs.

  1. They use the same timer.
  2. BG shots will now send out witness statements (because they're NPC accounts). Stealthing becomes a real tough process (this helps balance the later suggestions).
  3. Following the death of a player, the NPC account becomes full-strength and worth one kill (don't worry, they become more expensive so it won't be useful to train off BGs).

Reduce the number of BGs, hike up the price.

  1. Having 150 or more bodyguards following you around is unrealistic as fuck. Reducing it makes it easier to stomach for RP purposes.
  2. With the change above, only one BG can die in a single shot. So reduce the overall number and make them more expensive to balance it out.
  3. The BG costs will still rise per BG, just at a much higher rate (the "natural" cap of making a lot of them tremendously expensive).
  4. I'd like to include a feature that increases the price of BGs based on how many are currently employed (to create competition for additional protection), but this isn't necessary for the effects I'm looking for.

Make them more effective. Remove the cap.

  1. To go with the increased price, BGs provide much more defense. I suggest increasing the defense boost from a single BG from +5 to +50 or +100. Effectively, BGs should provide something close to invulnerability (with the exception of 1%s and wackbacks).
  2. The BG costs will create a natural cap if calibrated well. The purpose of this change is to make BGs very effective and very expensive to balance out the difficulty (relatively) in killing them.

So what will all this do?

One-Shotting can effectively end.

BGs will be very potent, and it will require far too many kills for anyone with heavy protection to be killed in a single shot. Plus, we do this without instituting a cap.

BG Wacking matters.

As stated in other threads, BG wacking is presently meaningless. However, being able to kill a BG worth +100 defense instead of just +5 is hella useful. BG wackers become invaluable assets overnight, but those at the top are still sitting with a ton of protection against one-shot kills.

"It's boring to train for months and do nuffin"

Every stage of your gun training is now useful in wars. Early stage: proer. Middle stage: BG wacker and shoot proers. Late stage: Finishing blows on big targets. Plus, with this system, a thousand kills split among 4 people could do as much or more damage than a thousand kills on a single player. I consider this to be a very profound improvement for the game, one that is more inclusive and will generally lead to a more intuitive "fighting" mechanic.

Report Post Tip

This can be ignored. It's been declared bad for the game.

Cato, I was looking forward to discussing this further with you, even to go as far as to seek you out on IRC so that we could talk about it. However, it became quickly clear that you were unwilling to let me give input on what I think would improve this idea to make it more suited towards the game.  You were too quick to shoot down the first half of points I was making, without even listening to the whole thing, which means you were actually shooting down things that were in support of, and that would get your suggestions implemented.  When I stepped away from the conversation before it escalated into an argument, I said lets leave it up to the users to figure out what they want.  Now you are dismissing the whole idea before you even give it a chance to get massaged into something viable.

I don't know if the lack of user response that makes you declare it bad for the game, or a misinterpretation of our conversation, or another source, but I still feel that there are some improvements that can be made on the BG wack mechanic, but in order for change to be made, sometimes you have to be willing to listen to someone elses opinion.

I am ready when you are willing.

Had you sought me out in PM, it would have looked very different. In DL, when people start discussing game changes, everyone and their mother has their two cents to give about what's best for the game. In my experience, this derails conversations hella quickly, and so I was trying to respond quickly to you (perhaps too quickly) to ensure that didn't happen.

I said this could be ignored because suggestions mean very little without your support/consideration. Once you've decided to ignore it, it's effectively dead. Because I think this suggestion is really good for the game, I'm willing to listen, discuss, whatever. I just think a separate channel or PM may be more effective for that conversation though.

Cato, Izzy wants more input then just yours and his. That's why he sought you out in DL. This brings the channel topic to your suggestion and allows for a health discussion for and against it. You need to be willing to listen as much as you talk, that is what Izzy is trying to say. He is not saying this idea is trash.

Report Post Tip

My two penneth - something as game changing would benefit from user feedback in the form of a discussion held within the forums and not in DL.

Report Post Tip

JamieOliver, you're absolutely right. Squishy if you want to get all your arguments out without interruption, posting them here would likely help.

Report Post Tip

Bring back the player commission? Might be useful with all the suggestions going on these days.
