Chicago Mornings Started by: 8-Bit on Sep 10, '16 13:21

The wind from a giant gaping hole in the HQ wall awakened

8-Bit. She groggily rubbed her eyes from a long night of conning poor shlubs in Detroit to buy her snake skin oil, and moving boxes still laid next to her as she slept on a mattress on the floor.

TopCat was past out in a small kiddie pool of water and bleach, a broken jug of milk and a mirror tray of catnip next to him as he slumped on the edge.

Piles of broken chairs scattered everywhere, a tricycle, various sporks and butter knives flung about. She walked over to the icebox to grab some orange juice and make herself a salad when she saw a note from her friend taped to the door,

Godfather Dr_Boom is dead, so is Don Zeus, at Borya -Mercedes

8-Bit blinked. She walked back to her room with the gaping hole and peered in the distance with her giant super binoculars.

Through the lenses she saw the gigantic statue of Godfather Dr_Boom toppled over, spray painted

hA hAA bOoM u R dEADsz!

8-Bit dimpled. Continuing to munch on salad she packed her bags again.

Roxy woke up to a grim skyline. After the shock subsided just enough for her to make some coffee, she sat at the window deep in thought. Suddenly, a bird landed on the window sill and seemed to look directly at her! It didn't move, chirp or anything, just stood there staring into Roxy's eyes. Roxy sat there, staring back, mesmerized.

KA-POW!

Instantly the bird fell from the sill, twenty stories, so that Roxy could only watch the speck of what was once a bird fall and disappear.

Roxy trembled, was that  a real bird? Was that a real gunshot? What the hell is going on? She stumbled backwards, then groped around and laid back in bed.

Hours later, Roxy was still in shock, unable to understand all the day's events. But for some reason, for the first time in her life, Roxy decided to go to church. She pulled on her gloves, fixed her hat, and practically ran to the nearest Catholic church she could find.

Banging on the door, she shouted for the priest to open up and let her in, not realizing the door was unlocked. Finally seated on the front pew, She clasped her hands together and prayed a delirious prayer of nonstop nonsense.  The confused the priest listened, and looked nervously around, half expecting birds to appear from the rafters.

Mercedes had prepared for this for months. She'd studied her subject ad nauseum. Surveillance had mapped out his entire life; she knew which side of the bed he slept on, which tailor he preferred, who his wife went to lunch with, which brand of vodka his mistress favored. She knew where he was every Tuesday at two (lunch with a business partner at the bar and grill on 17th Avenue) and every day at four (private company bathroom...you could set a watch by this guy's bowels). She'd assembled and disassembled her sniper rifle four times, each time convincing herself it wasn't clean enough, oiled enough, or accurate enough. She'd brought with her a small arsenal, even though it would never be touched or needed. Her version of stage fright. Everyone had a glitch, and this was hers.

This particular Tuesday at 2:45, she watches as the two gentleman leave the restaurant and wait for the valet to bring the company car around. Lining up her shot from the rooftop of the apartment building across the street, everything has seemingly fallen into perfect place...no wind, very little chance of collateral damage, very few if any witnesses.

One slow, deep breath in. On the exhale, she squeezes the trigger.

Nothing. No click. No jam. No response whatsoever.

She looks up in time to see a giant neon sign flare to life across the way. She can read the words, but they make absolutely no sense to her. She reads them a second time, and then a third. Has she lost her mind? WHAT DOES IT MEAN?!?
