MikhailKomarov was new to these shores. His time in his 'old' country was a wet and cold one. Russia was never a nice place. It didn't have the glamour like New York, but it was just as rough. The dark alleys were just the same. Hooded thugs were in the darkness, waiting for some poor soul to jump him. The bus had just stopped at Pennsylvania when Mikhail stood up to exit. As he took his first steps outside, he was reminded why he was here. Hours before... "Next!", the clerk at the counter of Ellis Island yelled. Mikhail stepped forward to immigration booth. As he looked around, he realized he was alone. Alone entering the greatest country in the world, to make a new name for himself. Back home, his father was a degenerate gambler and an abusive husband. The alcohol didn't help either. It was gasoline to a flame when his father was at the tracks. Mikhail left a younger sister behind. Not with his parents but his lovely aunt. Dasha was seven when Mikhail first left his abusive home. She'd be eleven the time he made his way to America. "Your papers?" Mikhail reached into his jacket and took out his immigration papers. He had them already filled out as he could speak and write in English. He was taught in school and was refined by his little sister. As he put them on the table, the clerk was surprised the papers were already filled out. Correctly even. As the clerk stamped and waived him through, Mikhail watched as others were getting their papers stamped. People from all around Europe were coming for a new start. Mikhail wondered if they all fled and wanted a new and better life. He found the first ferry to shore. While onboard he overheard someone speaking about which bus route to take. He wanted the scenic route of New York before he started looking for his uncle. His uncle was known to be the Mad Russian. As the bus drove through Times Square and passing the Empire State Building, Mikhail realized he was over it. The lights and the glamour were nice but he wasn't here for that. He got off the bus and started heading to his uncle's place... |
