Three construction workers wearing their denim workwear and protective hats are sitting on several wooden planks crudely nailed together. The sweet, savory aroma wafts through the cool autumn air as the amber-colored liquid drips from the fluffy honey rolls they are eating. The man on the left has a face with a number of dominant surfaces, a commanding bone structure, a square even brow, a nose that appeared to end in a blunt plane rather than a point while the guy beside him has the sort of face you forget even while you're looking at it. The man on the right wipes his mouth with a red cotton handkerchief, his eyes are like crisp toffee drizzled in melted chocolate and framed with darling lashes, a blade nose and burrowed cheekbones - Mani Caruso, possessing an appearance that makes him comparatively younger than most men of his age. "You, really know how to pick your bread Mani, best bread I've tasted since those hamburgers you brought not too long ago." A high-pitched voice emanates from Nick, the grinning man in the middle. "Not a bad meal for our last day here in the site", says Frank with a croaky voice. "We should get some drinks tonight, my treat." "Milli grazii, but I already have plans for the evening. Sorry amicu", replies Mani as he finishes his food. Words that clearly disappoints Frank but his face shows otherwise for he understands that gambling is one of Mani's coping mechanisms in dealing with loneliness.
"Gambling again my friend? Being a widower does you no good, you should find a lovely wife." "I know a live-in maid across Mulberry St., Though she's not quite as young as those model in the department stores, she's still a good catch considering you'll be forty in two months. A funny one too",adds Nick. But Mani doesn't seem to be paying attention in their conversation. His plans when his contract with Patrick Crawford's construction company expires is already set in stones. Resisting his gambling addiction which his coworkers didn't know, and earning a considerably higher wage in recent days, he already saved some money to buy himself a fine suit. Tonight he is going inside the Black Cat in Soho to search for the man he has not seen since the night he lost his life savings. Malcolm Shepard. |
