Black Sea Blues
Chapter 2

The funeral was like most for his kind, short and sparsely attended. I’d kept to the shadows across the street from the small Eastern Orthodox church, watching to see you would attend.

“ We’re a long way from Mother Russia now, eh Pavel?”

I watch the tall, slim blonde and the Italian leave the church together. Her stride and the way her escorts moved made it obvious who was in charge.

“Sooo, a Lady Boss, these Americans are so progressive.”
“This will be interesting”’, I think as I cross the street.

I fight the rage for control as my eyes fall on my brother's coffin. My fists clenched, aching for my pistol, my knife and a target to use them on. I look to heaven and smile as I calm myself, “Not today Pavel, this war is over. But there will be another. Oh yes, one day. The opportunity will come.”

Back on the street, the business of final arrangements resolved; I wonder at the mild autumn weather. I watch the people going their way, oblivious as sheep. I begin to smile. “Baa baa little sheep, enjoy the sunshine. Winter will come soon enough. That is when the wolves hunt the sheep. And Russian wolves are ravenous.”

Pavel came looking for a gold mine, he forgot that there are only two kinds of people, sheep and wolves.
We Cossacks are not sheep.
