The Darkness Started by: Dizzi on Nov 17, '16 23:56

"Who are you?" He yelled at her.

Dizzi had been ignoring the man in front of her. She had grown bored of his little game trying to conform her to be like everyone else in society so she drifted off into her own head. It was the best place but the loudest yell yet had drawn her out. Sighing heavily she regarded the man right in the eye.

"I am me. I refuse to be like you."

"Conforming is the best way to live. It'll keep you alive longer and everyone around you happier."

So this was it. This was the big ploy. Her eyes darkened with an anger that was felt deep within her bones and she once more kept her eyes on his.

"I will not conform. That is not living. That is being alive sure, but not truly living. If you are passionate about something you should never drop it to keep other people happy. Again, that is not living."

She could see his skin turning pink with a rage boiling in him. Giving him her charming smile she once again turned away from him and tried to keep walking. He grabbed her arm and yanked her back.

"You can't go until you become what we want you to be."

"Hate to break it to you but you can't break me. I'd much rather keep my passion regarding things I care about, not drone in the mediocre lifestyle. No one cares about mediocre. No one cares that you were the silent mute on door step number two of City Block A. That grows tiring. I want to be excited. I want to see color and possibility. You cannot cage me forever. You'll have to let me go."

He looked as if he was about to argue. This was something that had been going on for quite some time in a small dark room. She assumed they were underground somewhere but she couldn't be sure. He turned and nodded to the guard at the door.

"Fine, go. You'll be back."

The guard opened the door and Dizzi left. The corridor was pitch black so she felt her way towards the wall. As she continued on she could feel the darkness closing in on her, almost suffocating. Taking a moment to steady herself she pushed on.

"This was probably what he meant when he said I'd be back. That I would be too scared to walk through a bit of dark. I'll show him."

Keeping her hand along the wall she took one step at a time. She'd keep on walking right through the darkness and never look back.

'Henrietta Biggle' known to her gothic friends as Dizzi, had always been viewed with a level of 'I just don't know...' from her parents, family and the average joe in the streets. The pale face, dark piercing eyes and over use of black clothing and make up had been a great deterrent to most people to want to approach this being of the night.

Usually accompanied by like minded, morose individuals, Henrietta 'Dizzi' Biggle had taken an out of character shining to a local coffee shop. Mostly because it allowed her and her chums a place to spend hours without having to fork out for more than a single coffee. Between small sips of coffee, she and her friends would break the gloomy silence to pensively dispense snippets of the great depth of wisdom contained within their sullen minds. Profound musings such as "They're all sheep" would be delivered with a weary monotone, followed quickly by a chorus of "conformists" by the other members of the group.

An incident had occurred on what was otherwise a pleasant and sunny day. A group of truckers had entered the coffee shop during a pit stop for a cup of joe and a bite to eat. One remarked about the younguns having no appreciation for the real struggles of life and saying "they've got no good reason to be emo". Incapable of allowing the event of being called 'emo' to slide, Henrietta 'Dizzi' Bibble unleashed a tirade of anti-establishmentarianism culminating in a verse of well rehearsed poetry written a century before by Poe.

The angry outburst had gotten rather physical with Henrietta throwing her cup in the general direction of the men. The police were called, she was taken to the local clink and her parents called. As part of her punishment handed down by the 'conformist' judge were anger management sessions with a councillor.

The councillor had remarked in his notes of her case after just the first session she had apparently had difficulty with hearing. As when he first attempted to address her she couldn't hear him. He wasn't expecting to walk into his office to find someone had let themselves in without prior consent. He had asked her  "Who are you?" several times, until he finally asked loud enough that she heard him. She replied;

"I am me. I refuse to be like you." Then she changed her voice, as if to pretend she was some how mimicking the councillor. She lacked the ability to produce the bass required to get his voice right, but she the accent was fairly impressive

"Conforming is the best way to live. It'll keep you alive longer and everyone around you happier."

Then she changed back to her own voice

"I will not conform. That is not living. That is being alive sure, but not truly living. If you are passionate about something you should never drop it to keep other people happy. Again, that is not living."

Every so often Henrietta 'Dizzi' Biggle would pause in the middle of her rant to gaze at the befuddled man before her. Perhaps surrounding herself with plain faced emotionless gothic types had made her rusty at reading facial expressions, but in her head she had confused the man's look of confusion for a look of frustration and derived some juvenile sense of pride and pleasure from it.

For the councillor this had been a confusing ordeal that left him wondering if maybe a doctor should have diagnosed the obvious physical and mental issues she'd been experiencing already by now. Perhaps she'd just been avoiding the doctors as they DID have a habit of conforming to the teachings of science.

Shortly after a heated rant at him about the absurdity of the universe and bleakness of existence she threatened to become physically hostile if she wasn't allowed to leave, so the councillor told her "Fine, go. You'll be back." She had to, she was court mandated to keep going back for at least 6 weeks. It wasn't going to be easy for him, but he had faith.

As she opened the door to leave, he could see her squinting into the corridor, he made sure to add 'possibly needs glasses, too' to the notes on her file.
