Albert, a small, slender, older man was helping Jackal load boxes onto a truck. Their breath condensed as it rolled onto the cold air and the chill of winter wrapped itself around them. Dozens of bottle clanked against each other as the goods were stocked. As Albert loaded a box onto the truck the bottom fell out. Perfume fell onto the frozen asphalt breaking open. The aroma parted the chill and enticed the memories of her to dance in the ballroom of nostalgia like a siren enticing Jackal to crash into the cliff. He stood motionless gazing forward as the fragrance took its lead in the waltz. It was graceful, elegant, and weightless as it danced gleefully with Jackal. Her laughter was the melody, her whispers of “I love you” the lyric. The warmth of her cheek against his momentarily pushed the cold away. Albert snapped his fingers. He waved his hand in front of Jackal’s face. “You wait around long enough, maybe the boxes will load themselves” Albert joked. “Sorry, just day dreaming.” noted Jackal, timidly. Jackal remained silent. Albert gazed at Jackal, lowered his eyes, and shook his head. The pair loaded the rest of the boxes onto the bed of the truck. Albert entered the driver’s seat with Jackal in the passenger seat. “I’m happy you came home. Y’know, your ma and I have been worrying about you…and thanks for helping me move this load to your uncle’s shop.” “No problem, dad.” “We’re worried about Spain?” “What about it?” Jackal asked, annoyed. “Petey says you’re trying to get involved. Some excuse about smuggling fertilizer.” Albert stated. “Goddamn Petey. You say one goddamn thing 100 yds within that bastard.” “I’m not saying I’m against your decision. I just want to make sure you don't come back like last time.” "Like what?" "Broken" stated Albert, plainly. "We both know this is an excuse to go back." “An excuse for what” Jackal sharply retorted. Albert glared at Jackal. Jackal struggles to respond, stuttering slightly until he finalizes his thoughts. “All that matters, is I’m going to make money, and connections, and earn a reputation, ok?” The bumps in the road jostled Jackal against the window, his arm leaning on the door. His eyes drifted toward the moonlit trees. Their leaves had vacated. The branches pierced the veil of the night. Albert looked coldly forward visibly upset at the turn in conversation. Jackal drifted back to the dream. September 1928 A younger Jackal laid next to a gorgeous Spanish woman on a luxurious bed. The pair laughed as they tossed and turned one another in the bed. Jackal played with her smooth black hair. Her tanned leg was crossed over Jackal’s body. Her amber eyes transfixed on his. He ran his hand along the curve of her body. . “Te quiero, Luciana. Nosotros podemos correr lejos juntos.” Whispered Jackal. “Estas tratando de casarse conmigo me, mi poquito Jack Alberto.” Said Luciana, teasingly. Present The truck came to a halt in front of a large department store. A car was parked and running. A large man in a black jacket sat in the driver's seat. Jackal looked at his father. “We’re here.” said Albert. “I’m…I’m happy I could visit for a little bit. I don’t get to see you guys often, and it’s nice when I can stop by.” They both get out and Albert walks around the front of the truck and extends his hand to Jackal. “Son, I just need you to be careful, alright?” Jackal nods and he reached for his father’s hand. His father grasped his, and pulled him into an embrace. His father grabbed his head, and tucked it into his shoulder. “Just take care of yourself. I love you.” “I love you too, dad.” The pair stopped embracing. Jackal and Albert smiled as they parted ways. Jackal waved goodbye and went into the passenger seat of the car. "Hey, Petey, did you send out word about our little Spanish Affair?" asked Jackal. "It's done." replied Petey. "How'd Albert find out about this?" "He reads the paper. He called me last week and when I denied his question, he knew." "So you just lied about the fertilizer?" "Yeah." said Petey. "Well, lets go back to Detroit." |
