IP Sharing Started by: AfroSamurai on Apr 23, '10 12:50

Okay so at the minute you are required to report IP sharing every time you start a new character. This is a bit of a pain when the person/people you live with die regularly.

My suggestion doesn't need a lot of explanation. Basically I think it would be a good idea to link IP Sharing to the master account, so that you don't have to re-report it every time. I don't see any drawbacks to it, and the benefits I think speak for themselves.

I have no idea if this is even possible though, so please let me know what you think!

I think I sent you out for a bagel two hours ago and you still haven't come back...

While i'm here....

I'm sure there is a reason that it has not been linked to the master account because it would probably be easier for them to manage.  A method to their madness I presume.  Takes all of a minute out of your time.  Apparently quicker than it takes to get a bagel...

Here's an example for you to ponder...

Person A and Person B live/work together. One day Person A and Person C, whom they have met through the game, decide to meet up for some beer and Mafia at person C's house. Person A has been responsible and reported it in the past so has a valid IP share with Person B. Person C has not reported and forgets. So I see Person A and Person C sharing an IP. Neither have reported they are friends or playing at the same location. Person C has not reported IP sharing.

That's grounds for an admin wack right there... It looks like a dupe.

Now say I investigate further and see that Person A has sent a chunk of Person C.. Or the other way around. Well, that makes it even fishier.

We need you guys to report each different location and the other people playing (If not known leave the name blank) to avoid situations like the above. Otherwise I'll see Person A and Person B as ok, but throw in an unreported IP share with Person C and it's not so pretty.

Report Post Tip

Of course IP sharing should be reported in every location you use it with another player - all my suggestion was, was that say Person A and B are good friends, they report sharing in A's house as they are always there - when one of the players dies and restarts they have to report it again for every location they share. My suggestion is simply that instead of re-reporting it once a player re-starts, have it link to the master account so that you only ever have to do it once and it's done.

Report Post Tip

And as I said, introduce a Person C who does not report and Person B not reporting they are playing at the same location as Person C... It will look like duping and result in ALL characters connected to those names, Person A included as they are connected to Person B, being admin wacked.

But surely that would also be the case with the current system, unless I am misunderstanding something?

I was wondering if this had been reconsidered, with all the recent deaths occurring.

One of the major reasons why it is done this way and not by permanent master account - is to keep the data semi-fresh.

If it was done by master account, my personal master account would probably have on the upwards of 25 linked master accounts to it - just from all the people who have visited my house or theirs, but actually there is maybe only 3-4 people who would ever really play here once every 6 months.  What this means if it was by master account, everytime that 1 out of any of those 25 people gets looked at for an IP check, all 25 are checked.  This is 25 times the work, despite 22 of the people will never ever play here again.  This check will be done many times over the months...

By doing it by player account, it keeps the data fresh.  Especially now after the war, with using just player accounts, they will see I have 0 shared reports, because so far there are no shared IP usage yet...which means 25x less investigative work to do.

I get your point totally.

Perhaps a mid-point type thing then, where if you guys know we live together or share internet very regularly then it could be linked to our master accounts?

For instance, myself and my wife - I've had to report IP sharing a lot of times, and the times I forget tiggy then has to send out a mail to me. Whereas if our master accounts were linked I wouldn't have to report it every time, and tiggy wouldn't have to waste her time mailing me.

"where if you guys know we live together or share internet very regularly then it could be linked to our master accounts?"

So you want the admins to keep a log of who regularly players together, and expect them to manually link IP sharing to to their master accounts for these particular people. The extra lengths the admins would have to go to here is completely ridiculous, when it all it takes to complete the IP form is literally 10 seconds out of your day.

Report Post Tip

Thank you Branston... That's exactly it. If you don't want to be seen as cheaters take the 15 to 20 seconds it takes to fill out the form. It's your responsibility to prove you are not cheating. Sharing situations change all the time. It's not OUR responsibility as admins... :D Have a nice day.

Report Post Tip

I think the whole thing could be cleared up easily enough. Just reword the thing to "New character? Report your IP's."

In the end it seems that you want every ip every new character logs in to be reported. Just clear it up, you say sharing and people think "I dont share" or they have been playing so long the Sharing thing doesnt jog the ole memory about NEW characters.

Report Post Tip

We don't ask for EVERY IP to be reported though.. The mail I send out clearly states once per character unless the sharing situation changes.

"I play from work, home, phone, library, and my girlfriend's"

Boom all IPs covered in one report and it took eff all for time and effort
