Inspector Sledge-Hammer (suspended) stood around dutifully on the corner of 23rd Street and Seventh Avenue, The Bronx New York City, waiting for his Boss to appear with all the patience of a favourite Earl awaiting the arrival of his King. It was a bitterly cold day, the latest in a cold week that thankfully wasn't quite as cold as the week before. Nevertheless the light snow that was falling heavier by the minute forced Hammer to button his Trench coat right up to the top. He wasn't a big fan of Trench Coats as a general rule, but in this temperature he'd take anything as he waited indefinitely on the Boss concluding business in another part of the city. He took a step further back into the doorway of the large hall outside of which he stood. As he stood watching the road, a large black car appeared, immediately visible amid the white scenery. It drove along and seemed to slow down before driving off down the block to take a right and disappear from view entirely. The appearance of the car brought back memories for Hammer. Not entirely pleasant ones either. His father had been a New York Mobster, shot down on a street corner not unlike this one. Such risks came with the job. This was something that was drilled into Hammer long before and for a considerable time after his Father's death. He'd met Gaara at the funeral. There he was, just three weeks out of the academy and sitting down for some glasses of bootleg whiskey alongside a prominent New York Capo in his own right, to learn that Gaara and his father had some shared business interests. They'd both worked under New York kingpin Cthulhu and although Gaara spoke a little of these times except to confirm they existed, Hammer inferred a lot. He made a mental note to be in touch if ever a favour was needed. It was while on a plane to New York some years later and on entirely unrelated business concerning being suspended from the San Francisco Police Department, that he read the paper that told him New York Boss Cthulhu had been killed in a shoot-out. Mob wars of succession were normally bloody. With New York as the prize, Hammer had expected this one to be no different. He was as surprised as anyone when no war errupted. The reigns had passed to Sal_Giaquinto and his Right Hand Man Octavius and they set about running a tight ship, getting rid of the dead wood. Hammer had looked them up and been given some light work during his suspension, a suspension that would probably lead to a dismissal. It was after a period working for one New York outfit that he heard the news. Gaara was getting his own seat the big table. He was in touch not long afterwards. The loyalty and hard work of Gaara had paid off. And this was what had Hammer standing outside this big hall that had now become headquarters to a New York Family, fulfilling some business obligations within one of the five boroughs that began with his father. He would stand here all night if need be. The sign on the door behind him advertised Alcoholics Anonymous meetings twice weekly. This had become a running joke with the guys in Gaara's crew, who for years had operated out of the hall and two back rooms in the place. When Gaara suggested they use it as a front, Hammer had laughed out loud, assuming the Boss was joking. At that point Gaara had told him that three guys had been recruited from the AA meetings over the past week. All had been making themselves useful since. It turned out drunks and reformed drunks made excellent criminals. Who would have thought it? These guys were fast enough to steal the Turkey from a Thanksgiving Dinner, stopping only long enough to leave a calling card in the form of a shit in the sink. They were good alright. The AA tag likewise kept the cops away from the place, allowing Gaara and Hammer to play pool in the smoke-filled back office, pausing only occasionally to offer advice or a little something to help get back on their feet to the broken souls who wandered in and out of meetings. It took a special person to admit they needed help and Gaara was always on hand to make sure they got it, in one form or another but most usually in ways that were mutally beneficial. Everyone was a winner from a couple of dimes all the way through to dollars earned the hard way by the Strongarms and Stickup men of the meetings, who under Gaara's tutelage found that they did have talents, albeit the illegal ones associated with plying their new trade. Every one of them was proving an asset to the Family. Hammer smiled as he thought of it. Turning his attention back to the road, he took his hands out of his pockets and stood up straight as another car pulled up. The car he'd been waiting for. He spoke loudly before the door had even opened, knowing he would be heard: "Looking swell Boss, shoes like mirrors. The guys are all inside." |

Gaara emerged from the car slowly. He'd been meeting with Sal_Giaquinto and Octavius as they confirmed the dividing of the rackets along the borders of his new Bronx-based family. His new territory. He would stay in touch with the Labour Unions on this side where he'd done some of his best work. Plus he had a few other ideas in mind. Allowing Sledge-Hammer to take his coat without a word, he stood for a moment in the doorway of the large hall, turning back to survey his snow-covered neighbourhood. They would have some rich pickings around here, that was sure. He'd worked around here all his life. He knew the drill. All at once all of his hopes and fears had come together. As he stepped inside, he couldn't help but think that the real journey had only really begun. There was work to be done. Scores to be taken down. Money to be made. With a final look he disappeared inside. All those offering congratulations or commentary knew where to find him. But it was time to go to work. His business as the AA awaited. |

Elaina listened to Gaara with tears slowly forming in her eyes. When he had finished and walked into his new HQ, she lit a ciagarette and slowly walked away, thinking All the best to you old friend, I know that Cthulhu is watching and smiling to see his dreams for you finally fulfilled. |

Alfieri, accompanied by his ever so trusty bodyguard James Viacelli, strode into the new mob boss' office with a grin creeping up on the side of his face. He grabbed Gaara's hand and shook it firmly in greeting. Congratulations, Gaara, my friend. I'm overjoyed to see you step up today into the upper echelon of the criminal world and as I'm sure you're already aware of; a finer right hand you couldn't have chosen, heh, apart from my beautiful partner of course. |
