I'm just here, to speak. So I think you're here to listen, correct?

Well I walk the streets, flying from Los Angeles to New York, and everywhere in between. And I see a lot of what I would consider to be conflicting families. Now, prepare for a bit of an opinion that actually goes against the grain, and, God forbid, may sound like I disagree with the way things are run.

Now, first, a Disclaimer: I am prepared for the bashing. The, "why you talking bad about the leaders, man?!?!?". The, "Until you have a family you won't understand". The, "It's my structure, I'll run it how I see fit". I understand all that. May I make my observation?

Right. So, my observation of sorts is that many of our leaders seem to change their right hand men quite often. Too often, in my opinion; and hence this rant, if you'd like to call it that. Debate may sound better.

I, for one, don't understand the point of having your upper structure if you change it around so frequently. You have your Right Hand Man, your Left Hand Man, perhaps a family Consigliere, depending on your personal choice, and maybe one or two other upper structure jobs. But I see, for some reason beyond me, family that interchange those positions. Maybe make your LHM your RHM while the normal RHM sleeps. Sure, I guess I could understand. But how full is your mail box that he needs that official title for a few hours?

Now, I'm open to interpretations. Who knows, maybe you'll change my mind. Unlikely, but possible.

Feel free to throw in other topics, such as the son or daughter of an upper structure member getting privileges over those who have managed to stay alive and work hard. Or if you believe rank has anything to do with respect. You know, all those cliche things that we haven't talked about in a while.
Report Post Tip
Answering mail is the least of a RHM's duties. It's good to have someone always on duty for occasions in which problems need to be resolved with other families, or unruly members need to be dealt with.

I wouldn't make such a big deal out of this. If the biggest problem with how families are being run is the frequency with which they change RHMs, then things are going pretty smooth.
Report Post Tip
I feel part of the reason is integration and New Prospereties, opportunities, also from my observation i have only seen one or two leaders change there RHM, maybe the current one wasnt up for the job , maybe he needed a break ,moved city to help an old friend , i dont know any reason really but more to the point does it really matter?

for christ sakes man , if the boss feels he should make a change.. then a change will be made...

*Prestence smiles*

Well thats my two cents matey
Report Post Tip
Alas my RHM will stay my RHM. Yes answering the mails is only a small part of the RHMs job, but it is also an important one. You entrust them with mails that could contain secrets and vital information that could lead to the survival of your family.

Not only this but thier task are almost identical to those of the Boss. This means that whilst the Boss is away on business, that the RHM has sole responsibility, and that I cannot leave in some replacements lap.

Kevin the Cat. To you I say that you, as I expected many to do, jump immediately to the conclusion that I was upset and disturbed about the topic at hand. But by your explanation that sometimes an RHM is changed so that matters can be dealt with; is proof you don't understand what I'm getting at. A constant RHM would do that same. Hell, if we're talking in-family problems then that's exactly what the other positions are for. A chain of command.

to Prestence, I say this: Firstly, I'm not 100% you understand my meaning. I don't mean leaders changing RHMs from time to time. I mean a frequent change. Sometimes daily, sometimes more often. And yes, sometimes less often. Now, with that said, you jumped on the "a boss will do as he pleases" bandwagon. Thank You for that.

coughs

Gaara, I love you. But once again what you said was not a debate against changing RHMs on a frequent basis. In fact, if anything, it sounded as if you were on my side. So, thanks if you are.

But seeing as how I doubt that's you meant, I'll say that; again, a constant RHM can just as easily check mails and carry the responsibility of a leader.

Now, my replies to your comments done, let me add one thing. Call me old-fashioned, but if I was a leader, I'd have a hard time trusting one person enough to help lead the family, let alone 3 or 4 people to peak into my mail box whenever they felt. My belief is that one constant RHM is not only more efficient, but more logical. They know exactly what's going on, and work side by side with the leader.

maybe that's just me.

Rubik I believe I clearly stated where I stand with the subject.

Gaara smiles at Rubik, tips his hat and walks off down the dark alleyway...

If Zig-Zag was a leader he'd have no RHM. He's got me. He needs no RHM

I will find a way to kill you you stupid voice.

*chuckles* Oh, come now, you can't really believe that. Trust me. I know what you believe.

I hate you.

Speak:

Woof.

... Smart ass ...

Now, I see what you're saying Rubik. And I agree. Now, my family line has had a couple leaders--le gasp, right--and of those they had at times 2 RHMs whom switched off. But, I also know that that was for the reason of necessity. As there was no crew structure, as they were still fresh families when my ancestors died.

But, I agree with you. It all boils down to blame, really.

Multiple RHM's open you up to leaks. If you've got 2 or three people able to read your mail it's simple for one to leak it, act innocent, and point the blame at the others.

The crew structure is there for a reason, if none of the actual leaders are awake, you move down the list--or up the list, depending on your families rules--until you find someone awake whom you can speak to. It's as simple as that.

Zig-Zag kicks a mai...

I'M BEGGING YOU DON'T!

OUCH SUMBITCH!

Oliver pauses to listen to one of his close associates bring his query to the streets. After tilting his head and thinking a good long while, the tall man steps forth from the small gathering. Raising one of his hands in a gesture to gain notice, he bobs his head slightly and breaks into a small smirk.

A good point you make, -Rubik, but I will, sadly, have to disagree with you. Having one Right Hand would be ideal, yes, but no one around here can be ‘wonder man’ and swoop into the office on a daily basis to complete everything that needs to be done.

I would not say that Badass Inc. is as obsessive with the RHM changing- ‘too often’ like you stated, or seeing up to three or four people in the position in one day- but I do alternate that ‘slanty’ suit between two people on a daily basis. When, as in our case, you have a family of one-hundred people it does get difficult to attend to everyone’s needs, problems, queries and punishments as they arise. Yes, I have been there, done that. I tried the one Right Hand Man thing and it does work- until a point. That point being? When your small group of associates springs up from twenty-five to a massive organization nearing triple digits.

Sure, we at Badass Inc. have an upper-structure, but there are some things better left solved by someone of authority within the crew- like Kevin said, the person in the official title doesn’t just answer mail and sit at a desk in the headquarters looking pretty. They have just as much responsibility- if not more- than the Boss themselves. After all, do they not look after the family and have to appease their Family Heads at the same time?

Getting back on track, however… yes, I realize that I can attend to most of the crew’s matters myself, yet every once in awhile I need a break to step away and refresh my brain from all of the daily hubbub. That’s where my Right Hand steps in: to take my place when I am gone. Like I said before, though, with a family this large, what happens when my Right Hand Johnny needs a break from his brain overload? What if there is a time that he and myself will not be around to attend to matters for the family? Are we required to give up every form of life outside of the HQ? No. And that is where my Left Hand Molotov steps in to help us out so that we may attend to other worldly engagements.

For you, -Rubik, maybe there would only be one other person you would trust enough to help run your organization like you stated. I consider myself lucky that after a really bad streak of trusting the wrong people, I have two men I wouldn’t trade away for anything or any price. Besides, if I trust them enough with the position in the first place, how is their reading my mail going to have any effect on the crew? If anything questionable passes by my desk, I will be bringing to their attention anyway, no?

Perhaps I will pose this question to you. It is obvious that as our world grows in both size and age, old ideals are constantly being replaced with those that are newer. Would you personally use only one Right Hand representative because you honestly believe that one person can do it all? Or are you merely stuck with what has always been tradition in our way of life? Something to ponder, really.

A grin spreads across the man’s face as he shoves his hands into the pockets of his suit jacket- his eyebrows raising in question at his young friend and the others assembled before him.

Rubik, the others in the chain of command have limited authority. Only the RHM can make decisions for the Boss. Only the RHM can HQ wack. Only the RHM has access to the crewleader coffee shop. It isn't a coincidence that leaders switch RHMs around so that there is always someone available to deal with certain issues.

No, I didn't think you were upset, I only meant exactly what I said. That if this is a family's worst problem, things are going pretty smooth. Nothing more, nothing less.
Report Post Tip
I'd had my heart set on one RHM until I realized this.

Only an RHM or a Crewleader can auth shots. Therefore, where we must have authorized shots for killing inactive mafioso of three ranks lower then ours, there must be an RHM on the vast majority of the time, to allow us to get auth in those desperate times.

Now, I'm not sure if the rule applies if you get auth far in advance, or how long auth lasts, but I'm sure that you need it.
Report Post Tip
Oliver, I love you like I love my Irish beer. And I love my Irish beers.

Honestly, I don't believe that family size makes multiple RHMs a requirement. Now, don't misunderstand me. I comprehend what you're saying, and while I may disagree slightly, I can't for a second live in the reality that you do. I can only speculate.

That being said, I believe one person is capable of doing it all. Many family matters can be brought to someone if the RHM or leader are offline. That is the point of a structure. As I said before, a chain of command. So say one of your newest associates has strolled upon something while wondering that streets that needs attention. But he's new, he's not sure who to talk to. The first one is probably his sub-crew leader. And so on and so forth.

Kevin. I'd just like to make a correction to your statement. I know you know better; but you can't make a good point with your facts our of wack. Pun not intended. The RHM is not the only one capable of HQ wacking. The RHM certainly is not the only one who has access to the Crew leader in the coffee shop.

If the leader is in the coffee shop to be contacted, I'm sure that leader is somewhere in the streets. Yes, there are circumstances that arise where a leader needs rest, as Oliver stated. But I think it's safe to say that overall, one of those two people are available.

"Rubik, what if a war is going on and the Leader and the normal RHM are asleep? The LHM can't auth shots, what ever shall we do?"

It's war. It wouldn't be the first time if someone has engaged in war with a leader's members while the leader and RHM slept. Many are against it, calling it cowardly. Many believe it's intelligent. That's not this discussion. My point being, it happens. And more than likely, it'll happen because you don't expect it.

Authing inactives? Come on Ziggie. I know you don't really believe that is the duty of an RHM. And having multiple RHMs may not solve that anyway. What if he goes to take a piss or smoke a cigarette while you're desperate for that authed shot? I know you're going to shoot regardless. What you speak of is a luxury.

Oliver, the one thing I'm having a hard time fighting back with is your comment about the two trusted individuals and not worrying if they read your mail. Personally, if I trusted two men or woman THAT much, I'd feel the same. But I'd still keep one man as my right hand. Why? Well, that's why it's tough to answer. I just don't think switching them out is a requirement. As with Ziggie; it's a luxury. It's an attempt to make everyone happy at all times of the day.

By the way, I know at least 80% of the people standing listening are smarter than this; but for that 20% who don't get it:

I'm not verbally attacking Oliver nor any other leader. Get off my back.
Report Post Tip
Rubik, I thought you would understand that I meant when the leader isn't around.

That is usually the reason for switching RHMs; so that there is someone available when the Boss isn't around. Quite often the Boss and the usual RHM are gone at the same time.

So, to rephrase my point. Other than the Boss, no one else can HQ wack. No one else can get access to the crewleader coffee shop. No one else can make major decisions that involve other families. No one else can auth shots (yes, this may be necessary in certain circumstances, not a luxury. Did you forget that now you cannot shoot more than three ranks below you without auth?). No one else can observe the Boss' personal statements to see if he has been attacked.

No one is getting on your back, so don't take contrary opinions so personal. You're just fighting a losing battle here, because there are very many good reasons for switching RHMs.
Report Post Tip
Rubik, I agree with a lot that is said here both by yourself and others. One point you are not picking up on though, is what Zig-Zag said, anyone 3 ranks below you can NOT be shot at without auth - not a case of we would without. My ancestor as a CL, had one RH but frequently switched when the RH was unavailable. She did this only when she was available and to certain people to give them the experience and understanding they would need to continue to grow themselves and from her diaries, I believe it worked well.

Currently I am holding a rather new position of my leader's LHM's assistant. People do come to me with problems when he, the RH and the CL are unavailable, however just as frequently as I can help them, without the power of the suit, I cannot. So that would point to holes in the idea of having only one person ever in that seat. And having been RHW in the recent past for a crew almost ass large as Mr. McTavish's, I can tell you it does take more then one person in that seat to handle all.
