Looking into a Mirror Started by: Support on Apr 05, '17 19:21

Support tied her hair up and put on her nurses uniform. The times were hard for anyone looking for work and she was still amazed that she had managed to be hired as private duty. She had often seen people around the small building where she worked. Some were brought in with self inflicted bullet wounds while others had the minor illness or dazed look of ghost encounters. The doctor who hired her worked for a large group of people in Chicago. She knew enough to know that they would never bring their own to a hospital and she couldn't really talk about her job with anyone outside of work. So she toed a very fine line between her personal life and her work life.

Glancing at the clock she realized if she wasn't out the door in a minute she would be late. She looked for her shoes and swore under her breath as she gripped the door handle and made her way out into the busy streets of Chicago. Keeping her head low and feeling the crush of people around her. Never being a fan of crowds she tried to walk faster. She'd pass people and swerve around others until she reached the door step of a large building. Quickly passing through the door she stepped to the side where she caught her breath and glanced at the time. She was late.

Taking a look around her she could see the doctor she worked with staring at her. She took off her jacket and hung it up as calmly as she could. Support knew the doctor was less than impressed and she managed to bring herself next to him. Still young she was a bit shy and she shuffled her feet a little bit.

"Is there anyone that came in over night?" She asked quietly.

"Yes. A young woman was brought in. It appears she took a bullet to the chest."

Support nodded and headed towards the new admissions room. She spotted the woman and stared openly. Her mouth had dropped as she looked at the woman. From the doorway she could see the resemblance between herself and the woman. Their facial features were almost identical and as she moved closer she could tell this woman wasn't more than twenty years older than herself.

Picking up the paperwork for the woman and noted the name on it, Shantelle. It rang familiar but she couldn't place it just then. She moved in closer and began to examine the gun shot. Gently she took the bandage that covered it off and realized too late that it was still bleeding. Hurrying to cover it once more as she glanced sideways at her patient. The colour from her face was completely gone and her breathing seemed inaudible.

Silently Support worked to stabilize the young woman as she tried to place her face. Had it been someone she knew a long time ago? Maybe from her childhood she thought. It had been so long since she thought of those days. The minute she could leave home she went to work. She could not stay in a home with her father and younger brother, she needed to branch out on her own. Find her own way in the world and carve out a place for herself. She never quite knew what happened to her mother, and she did try once to have someone locate her. They had given her a bunch of papers with her mother's information but she had never gotten the time to follow up as she began her job as a duty nurse here.

As Support was brushing off the blood she could hear whispering. She turned around to see if anyone was in the room with them but it was empty. She leaned forward slightly.

"Ma'am? It'll be okay. I am here to take care of you." Words that were lies as this woman was not long for this world, but it was her job to calm the patient.

"Tec.." Shantelle began, but stumbled briefly as her eyes flew open looking right at Support. Trying once more she got the name of her dearest friend out. "Technical."

"Whose Technical ma'am?"She watched as the eyes closed on her patient and what sounded like her last breath. Putting down her stuff she went to find the doctor.

"Doctor come quick!" Support rushed towards him and spoke quickly. "I think she just died."

They both rushed back to the room. He confirmed her death and stood there staring at Support then back to Shantelle. He looked a bit confused as he turned his attention back to her.

"You look an awful lot like her, you know?"

"It was like staring into a mirror. Creepy right? She mentioned Technical. Have you ever heard of that name before?"

"Maybe. I will see what I can do to find this Technical."

She nodded and he left her. Cleaning up the mess and preparing the body for a funeral service. As she began to work, the actions seemed almost mechanical and her thoughts drifted. And then it came to her. The name the person she hired for her mother was Shantelle. "Could this really be her?" she thought to herself.

Sighing heavily Support promised herself to find this Technical and see if she could learn anything more about this woman.
